So this is a small thing, but I mentioned in the Watts thread a couple times.

Why did we not at least offer Watts + 36 for 31 and 34. Easily jump up a couple spots for nothing. Port have just traded that 34 in some ridiculous swap of late picks. We could have had it.

Like there's this theory going round that we go in and just get stuff done, but why not actually stop and think for a bit and get a better deal?

Makes me think we should have played WAY harder ball with Lever. He wanted to leave. We should only be finding out about the deal now. You'd have to think it would have been a better deal for us. Why not be ruthless?

I feel a bit despondent after that trade period.

Yes, we got Lever.

But we lost two first round draft picks and Jack Watts... and our first pick, in a very shallow draft, is pick 29.

We did poorly.

Unless we somehow get another Hunt with those late picks, we're just going to get five players that we will have to delist in two years time.

We've wasted opportunities and I feel like we are going to pay for it.

We should just draft three Queensland kids this year and if one or maybe two of them become ok, we get about eight first round picks from Gold Coast in two years time

Should've traded Petterd or Bail up when they had currency.

Oh well, Wagner it is.

As much as I haven't been stoked with some of our decisions over the last couple of weeks, at least we're not Gold Coast :rainbow:

To be fair i just listened to Scott Clayton and after hearing him speak I an see why they gave up pick 2.

They had 4 top 10 picks last year and next year in a supposed super draft have 2 first round picks, 2 second round picks and 2 third round picks. Adding Weller to that list that is a pretty good draft hand over a 3 year period. So getting rid of pick 2 this year isn't a big deal all things being equal

I would like to think that we did make the attempt for that

If we did though, surely Port would have gone for it (given what they ended up trading it for). Which tends to indicate we didn't. Given how hasty we were to give up 2 first rounders for Lever, I wouldn't put it past us not having even looked at it.

I think so too. Massive draft haul last year and a strong hand next year means you can be a bit fast and loose with this years, even though it's a big pick.

The biggest thing in my opinion, is the fact that they just don't have players like Weller lining up to go there, so if he becomes anything like the player Freo seemed to think he'll become, it's a risk that you just about have to take.

Yep paid overs for Lever, Got unders for Watts.

Needed to hustle harder.

Gee Essendon knows how to trade.

Stringer for 25 and 30 is robbery.

Dees need to seriously study the Bombres.

Actually pretty excited about picks 29, 31 and 36.

Taylor plucked Hannan out of nowhere with 46 last year and ANB at 40 a few years back. Gawn was a 34th selection and both the McDonalds/Nev Jetta were over 50 picks. So it’s not as dire as a lot are making it out to be.

That, and we're not automatically putting our draft picks into next years Rd 1 best 22 line up these days. Can actually let them develop in the VFL for a couple of years

You mean the team who has a glaring weakness in midfield and has done very little to rectify it? Don’t get me wrong, in terms of what they gave up the Bombers did very well. They still have a very imbalanced midfield and they can’t be a serious contender until they fix it.

Don't understand why they didn't throw everything at Rockliff

Yep, they have a big ugly hole in the Inside Mid department, and they bring in a half back and two forwards who might play some midfield minutes.

They did really well with the deals themselves, no doubt about it, but I think they got carried away with players actually wanting to play for them.

Essendon 2018 will be similar to Port Adelaide 2017. They’ll beat up on the lower ranked teams, but will be completely found out by good, contested sides. Team full of one-way runners that will be smashed around the contest and in transition. They’ll be pretty to watch though.

Their trading smacks of a club gearing up to have a big flag tilt over the next couple of years before Hurley and Hooker start to fade. At least that’s my guess. But none of those three they traded in are a sure bet to work out either. If they get Stringer firing though, their forward line is going to be very potent.

It's like Collingwood last year. Needed a key forward so they go out & recruit Mayne, Wells & Dunn.

Essendon was able to take their time to get the best deals possible as they had 3 guys nominate them relatively recently.

We were in a way obliged to get the Lever deal done, quickly, at whatever cost. When you target a particular young player and persuade them to seek a trade and nominate you, I have no doubt at all you have to provide assurance way back that we will get the trade done. If we had played angles and fought it to the wire, you piss off the player, risk late swooping entrants getting in Lever’s ear and if the trade falls over it could be years before any manager recommends to a player to come to Melbourne.

I can live with it. I can also live with the Watts trade, because we owed it to him to get him to the club he picked.

Hope the super draft turns out not to be too super though.

25 and 30 for a gambling addict with other (significant) off-field problems who hasn't played well for two years and whose teammates can't stand him is win/win IMO.

They've already got Stringer and Goddard in the team. That's two more giant flogs than most teams have.

My God you just made me realise: Goddard and Stringer. Wow. I would like to be a fly on the wall for that first awkward interaction between the two of them. Probably be a lot like a scene from the beginning of 2001 a space odyssey.

I'm happy with the trade period. On the face of it we over paid for Lever and got unders for Watts. But Lever is a gun. Number one intercept player in the league and only 21yo. Can understand crows wanting a lot for him. You can talk about stringing things out and walking players to the draft but we just want to get deals done. Our list is young and right in the frame for finals and even. Premiership push. Bringing in a quality 21yo works.
Watts I would have hoped for more. But the club wanted him out and Port couldn't really give anything higher. Realistically we wouldn't have got much more than 25ish.
Balic for nothing. Can't go wrong.
