Kim hackdorn was on 882 yesterday. He talked about Tim Kelly and Carlton have had lots of meeting with him and welfare officer has spent a lot of time with him about his possible relocation.

All it confirms is that Carlton is really keen. Whether that's 30 keen or later don't know but if West Coast are really interested they'd use 26 just in case.

Hagdorn must have read the posts on here from a month ago then.

Also rumored Blues interested in Stoddart at 30 and that was before the Dohcerty injury.

Doing an apprenticeship gives you high chance of a reasonable long steady career. What’s the average length of an AFL career? 4-5 years? Even a successful AFL career may only give him 10 years earning pretty decent coin, so you still need to find something to do for another 30+ years. Not sure but I thought most of the clubs still encouraged players to continue studying of some kind, so they have some future after footy.

All I was saying is that I can completely understand why recruiters may see quitting year 12 as a negative.
I don’t have a problem with it, study just isn’t for some people. It’s not like starting an apprenticeship 6 months earlier will make much of a difference overall. He’d have to quit once he started playing footy anyway.

Also the WA kids have typically finished school the year before. Some of them start studying at Tafe/Uni in their draft year, others focus on footy. Alex Rance is an example of someone who focussed on footy for the year and had a part time job at a restaurant in Subi.

13: Clark/Higgins
21: hoping for a slider (Constable/Allen)
26: Kelly (assuming Carlton take at 30)
32: Miers
37: Miller
69: Garlett
87: Ryan

RD
Hamish Brayshaw
Scott Jones
Jac Jackiejenkenjumurra

I would add in O’Brien at 21.

I also like Worpel at 32 if available.

Garlett and Ryan to the rookie draft and Brayshaw to the ND

Greetings lads, first post jut thought I'd throw my 2 cents into the ring.

I think a fairly serious issue we have at the moment is this glut of similar players who either aren't fast enough to be line breaking midfielders or aren't strong enough to be inside bull midfielders, I think sheed fits this description perfectly. The two midfielders we'd be hoping stood up to take permanent roles in the midfield this year are Yeo and Duggan who both played their best football at the HBF with both sometimes looking a bit lost in the midfield. Assuming this is where they play this year we have a log jam of Partington, Cole, Nelson, Watson, Rotham who don't really seem to fit anywhere and my fear is stoddart only adds to this list.

I think our needs are a classy line breaking midfielder, an inside bull and a small forward with look a requirement for a Kennedy replacement either falling this year or next, i'd really like to see our picks have a bit of mongrel about them. based on that I like either:

13: Clark (I think will go top 10)/Higgins
21: If we pick Higgins we prioritise a pacy midfielder - O'Brien/Moore/Bailey
26: Kelly, if not available and we don't take higgins - Miers, if we take higgins perhaps Brander if available
32: Worpel
37: Ben Miller/Hayden if we took Brander
69: Hamish Brayshaw/Jake Patmore
87: Callan England

Rookie:
Garlett
Schloithe
Jones
Ryan

What I fear we'll pick:

13: Allen - Darling, Waterman, Allen all in same team
21: Kelly
26: Stoddart
32: Starcevich
37: Houlahan
69: Ryan
87: Garlett

So as we get closer to draft day, I am wanting us to nail it and avoid pit falls. I would like Brady Rawlings to drive the process and not Rohan O'Brien. We have seen from recent years what O'Brien has done and I believe Rawlings now has both hands on the list job. Time to shape our list.

I believe we need to go three genuine and tried mids in our first 3 picks. I am not a believer in best available, I am happy to take very close to best and believe the best available is grossly over-used. One of the 2 best recruiters are Wells and Hines who have shown they have their view and do not get overcome with group think.

Pick 13 - MID - Clark, L Fogarty, Constable, O'Brien
Pick 21 - MID - I am believing one of the above three will be there still at 21 and will also be happy to take Kelly (prior to Geelong) or one listed at 26.
Pick 26 - MID - Kelly, Bailey, Ling, Spargo
Pick 32 - Mid and variety - Spargo, Moore, Stoddart (included because we are sniffing so assume there is interest), Houlahan
Pick 37 - Tall - Miller, Ballard, Taylor, Coleman-Jones, Clavarino, Kreuger

The above list would give us great coverage and meet with our priority picks our biggest deficency.

Not stipulating the later picks as these will not determine whether draft 2017 is a success.

Note to Rawlings:
Kelly is the only WAFL mature player I would want inside our first 5 picks.
Schloithe has merit as a pick but later. Banfield likely to be taken around 69 as well so unless an obvious talent, one of these two would be good.
Ryan is not to my taste and very much later - 83.
This constant Starcevich banter is pissing me off. Hayden gives as much inside grunt and can actually play midfield and he should be around for the 69 pick. Depends whether you want to address age profile early of later.
You don't want a small crumbing forward ? Or do you not think that there are any good ones in this draft ? I would have thought that a crumbing forward would be on the Eagles radar.

What're higgin's evasive skills like? Someone like mitchell for instance isn't quick, but is still incredibly difficult to tackle with his change of direction and ability to swing onto both sides.

Interview with Jack Higgins bare with the interviewer hes pretty loud.

I want him, but again good luck at pick 13.

Thanks mehow2g for posting the clip, unfortunately I don't have the patience to watch it as I did try ( watched the first five minutes ) but that clown doing the interview ( more like a bloody monologue than an interview with the interviewer who cant keep his mouth shut ).

What were the salient points that impressed you about the Higgins interview.
Sorry being lazy here and picking your brains but listening to that interviewer just did my ******* head in.

According to the interviewer he see's all kids come through, he said hes never seen a 18 year old with so much professionalism, Higgins apparently works on his craft(skills) everyday, because of his professionalism the interviewer believes he's going to win a brownlow.

Jack himself believes he's good for a top ten pick and Jack said multiple times "just wait to I get to a professional environment(AFL club) with coaches etc".

Basically his application is second to none, he always want's to improve, I mean a lot of kids say what people want to say but judging off that interview he really does mean it.

With that being said if he slips to 13 I'd be shocked.

Edit #100, if we get him he will be a very important cog in our midfield he would help our current mids a great deal with clean disposal/decision making which most of our mids need help with, I can see Shuey finally hitting his potential with a guy like Higgins around.

He looks more evasive than Mitchell, his both sides are identical he focuses on his skills/craft a great deal, plus he tackles like a mad man.

In fairness I believe that Asterix has listed as options at the following picks :

Pick 13 . L Fogarty
Pick 26 . Spargo
Pick 32 . Moore

All of these guys could play as a small crumbing forward and even Kelly could play that role but he would be best utilised further up the ground.
With any pick inside the top 40 I would not want to waste a pick solely on a crumbing forward, inside 40 the player IMO would need to offer some other positional versatility to warrant consideration.

Ironically the better performed crumbing forwards over the last decade, Milne, Betts, and Jeff Garlett have all come of a rookie list and the mature ager Paul Puopolo came as a very late pick ( pick 66 ).

IMO you don't waste a pick in the first two rounds solely on a small crumbing forward unless they can contribute elsewhere on the ground.

My updated Dream Draft

13: Clark
- Backups Coffield, Stephenson

Need Addressed: A Grade Inside/Outside Mid
Rationale: I think our number 1 drafting need is for a Potential A Grade Inside/Outside Mid. There is a chance Clark isn't available at this pick but he is my preference over the others as he offers more Grunt than Coffield and has shown more as an inside midfielder. Stephenson if he does slide as rumoured could be a win and worth the risk at our pick. That could be the reason neither Clark/Coffield are available.

21: Brander - Backups Balta/Allen

Need Addressed: KPF Type
Rationale: I think our number 2 need is a Kennedy replacement. Until Petrie this year we have been surviving on just one true Key forward and haven't had a proper CHF. The prospect of darling leading our forward line in a couple years is concerning and given the time it takes to develop KPFs I think we need to start now. Brander is my preference as I think he is the best prospect as a true KPF in this draft. Balta is more likely to be a KPD and Allen another tweener darling type. We would be lucky to get any at this pick though but I'm convinced one will slide. Most probably Balta.

26: O'brien - Backups Stoddart, Naish

Need Addressed: Outside Midfield Class
Rationale: Our outside talent atm is okay But Jetta is getting on and Gaff is a chance of leaving so some class is needed. O'brien would be a minor miracle at 26. I'm pretty hopeful Stoddart would still be available if O'brien is gone. Naish another possibility is bids not matched by Richmond.

32. Kelly - Backup Houlahan, Spargo

Need Addressed: Goal kicking HFF/Small Forward
Rationale: Would be good to sure up our midfield stocks for this year and Kelly could do that straight away so is my preference here. Longer term I see Kelly slotting in nicely up foward where he could add some serious spark but there's a big chance he's not available so Houlahan, Spargo the backups. Both of these could help fill that HFF/pocket role going forward and provide some spark in our forwardline. We need more avenues to goal and a bit too much rests on Rioli with his weak hammy's and fat stomach.

37. Worpel - Backup Starcevich

Need Addressed: Clearance Player/Midfield Depth
With the retirements of priddis and mitchell our inside midfield brigade has been left quite thin. Other than Redden I don't believe we have an inside bull specialist on our list so am happy to invest in one even without concerns of being left with a limited midfield. Worpel is one of the better clearance players in the draft and has a mature body. If he's gone I would gamble on Starcevich. He has all the unteachable attributes to be a gun mid with absolutely elite speed/agility and endurance. He's a great size for a true big bodied mid, is determined and goes in hard and has sound skills. It is concerning with the attributes he has that he can't find more of the pill but as he matures if he can develop this side of his game and footy positioning/IQ he should be a gun. If he can't we could just turn him into a tagger that could athletically match anyone.

69. Ryan - Worth a gamble
87. Brayshaw - worth a gamble

I think when drafting it's important to look at your U27 Team as this allows for your draftees to have 3-5 years of development time. After this draft here's how I see our U27 side.

FB: Sheppard Barrass Nelson
HB: Duggan Mgovern Yeo
C: Gaff Sheed O'brien
HF: Kelly Brander Ah Chee
FF: Ryan Darling Rioli

Ruck: Lycett Venables Clark

Depth: Vardy, Worpel, Cole, Cripps, Waterman, Partington

Could still do with some more elite midfield talent, a true KPF and a project ruck.

Yes I do want small forwards but preference is those who can also play other roles.

Smaller forward role - Spargo and Moore please. They offer midfield as well.

L Fogarty resting forward will also be playing a role.

For people looking for stand out traits with Higgins attributes, i doubt youll find many.

His pace is average, he's an awkward height, he is reasonable overhead but nothing great (like Greene)

However he's an old school, highly skilled footballer who just knows how to play the game. It's also been pointed out by many, including his peers, that his professionalism is outstanding.

You'll know you're going to get somebody who not only wants to be there, but wants to win, unlike others on our list who appear happy to be costing through their careers until the end.

Don't mean to burst your bubble (and I know you said dream draft) but I suspect those first four will all be gone by those picks.

Anyone see the footy prophet twitter mock draft.

Our selections were:
13. Obrien when Constable was still left.
21. Kelly because fear Cats may take, if the cats want him with picks 22 or 24, go for it.
26. Garner
32. Patmore
37. Taylor

The guy who did purs should be shot.

Don't see what's wrong with us overlooking Constable at 13.

Yeah I agree with you, i've been pretty optimistic with the first options, hence the backups. That said I don't think any of them are that outlandish to be ruled out completely. I would be surprised if one or two of those players aren't available at the placed picks, such is the nature of the draft, people slide everywhere and it never goes completely as expected. Think of players like Grundy/Laverde.

It's actually interesting to note that all those players are still within their draft range provided on the AFL draft machine with the exception of Brander who's range is 5-15 and i've optimistically got at 21. He's been sliding of late though.

It's sad but that's the reality some players are happy to just coast through their careers and we have a bit of those types, Wellingham was one of them.

They lost all credibility when Cerra lasted until pick 10
