2018 AFLW Season - offseason moves

I think the way the new clubs have been allowed to plunder the lists of the existing clubs was always going to hurt. I think the AFL blundered there, especially for the Lions who were always going to struggle to hold their players.

Wouldn't agree with your assessment of "10 better players", either but I'm not going to start critiquing them all (especially as some have re-signed and others haven't yet), so I'll leave it at that.
We can disagree but this isn't bitterness, not happy she left, but still be my assessment of her importance of she still played here. Not emotionally invested enough to be pissed off.

Sabs is like the Daniel Ricciardo of AFLW.

Serious pro on the track, and all smiles and charisma off it.

Saw her in action at the open training day at Coorparoo in February (a Sunday morning, I think it was)

By in action I mean her personal demeanour and manner of speaking, both to individuals and to a crowd.

I couldn't have been more impressed . Absolutely first class.

Go Freddy.:thumbsu:

Bates, Virgo, Webb, Randall,Lutkins, Sab,Woosha, Anderson, Kasler, Conway. There is 10 better players without trying. I did not say she was useless but I don't think she was very good either. Don't think anything I said was unfair. Generally your best player is the one who's head pops up on all the articles, was not the case and that was because she is good looking.
I think the word on everyones lips in years to come will be Conway.

McCarthy, Exon, Zanchetta and Campbell re-sign.

Hopefully McCarthy finds some form next season and I think Exon will be a big improver.

She certainly has the physical tools to impact games as we saw in season 1. As team defense became more organised she probably found it a little harder in the season just gone. Hopefully as her game sense and skills improve she'll be able be able to get going again.

She looked as though she spent a good part of the year injured too.
Wasn’t her usual blistering self.

A host of stars have today re-signed with the Brisbane Lions for the 2019 AFLW season.

Inaugural Club Captain Emma Zielke and the 2018 Best and Fairest Kate Lutkins have both recommitted to the Lions for their third year.

Both players have been with the Club since day one and Lions Women’s CEO Breanna Brock is thrilled they will return in 2019.

“It’s always a great endorsement of your footy club when your Captain and Best and Fairest are back on board for the next season,” Brock said.

Zielke, the Club’s first Captain, often found in the midfield, has never missed a match for the Lions.

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Zielke said.

“I’m excited about this list we’ve built for 2019. I believe it will be another strong season for us.”

Lutkins, who works for the Defence Force, took the competition by storm in 2018. In her second season she was awarded an All Australian blazer, won the Lions’ Best and Fairest Award and earned a reputation as one of the league’s toughest defenders.

“I put a lot of effort and time into last season and I guess I got some reward for it. I just had a really good time and enjoyed playing with the girls,” Lutkins told lions.com.au.

“I’m super excited to go again for season 3.0 for the Lions. I’m super stoked.”

Skillful midfielders Emily Bates and Ally Anderson have also re-signed for 2019, along with key defender Leah Kaslar, hard-running utility Megan Hunt and the energetic Breanna Koenen.

2018 Rising Star nominee Sophie Conway and future leader Arianna Clarke will return for their second seasons with the Lions.

Players yet to re-sign are Ayre, Blair, Cowan, Howarth, Keeffe and Ritson. Ayre's the only one to have played a game.

All delisted.
Hopefully they get a chance to be resigned if they put in a good QWAFL season. I really liked Blair as a player, and was surprised she didn't get a run.
Brisbane has developed a bit of a history of drafting really good youngsters straight out of U18s, then delisting after a year.

The balance for the girls between finishing AFLW and then going back to club footy hits some harder than others. I think Katie was a bit burned out after winning a flag with Yeronga and then heading straight back to AFLW 2.0. From what I understand, she's easing back into Clubland this year so that she'll be raring to go for AFLW 3.0!!

How many girls from the Gold Coast academy have we kept on our list?

I feel a lot better after seeing this list. We still have two of the best forwards in Sabs and Woosha, two AA defenders in Virgo and Lutkins, and a handful of genuine mids in Bates, Anderson, Exon and Zielke. Just need a few of the second year players like Collingwood and Zanchetta to step up, McCarthy to hopefully be back to her best, and maybe a back up ruck, and I think we'll be as competitive as anyone. Maybe North has accumulated more talent, but I think we're probably among the strongest of the remaining teams for spread and depth, and the new clubs will take some time to get everything to 'click'.

Hard to say who leaves in 2019 as I think it will depend more upon announcements re. pay structure and work experience (and who GC thinks they might be able to lure for more money) than who was recruited from a GC-based club.

Is Lauren Bella draftable this year? If so, they might see her as being ahead of Keeffe
She is, yes. And given Keeffe didn't play any games, they may just want to keep their options open in case someone else pops up this QWAFL season. If not, they can always redraft her.

Most clubs have delisted players supporters have been surprised at, however, if they are good enough, they will put their hand up for re drafting. If someone better has come along, then you have the list space for an upgrade. Nothing worse than keeping marginal players on the list, then discovering you cannot take better players because you have no spots left.
