It's not a phantom of where he thinks players will go. They're his personal rankings.
And personal rankings are a lot different than where they actually fall.

He can go as a F/S to Carlton so I'm not sure we'd outbid them
Hickmott will be available without restrictions to all 18 clubs in the upcoming national draft after Carlton elected not to nominate him as a father-son prospect.

His best chance of being picked up appears to be as a late selection or in the rookie draft, and Sumich said any club which takes a punt will recruit a fastidious footy nut willing to go the extra mile.

A good example of why I shouldn't comment before reading the article haha

Oh dear lol

Suns are in a massive rebuild, so trading for Carltons first next year, likely to be a top 5 pick, helps them spread their rebuild. Using what I put forward they'd have picks 1 & 2 this year and picks 1 & say 3 next year. Will it happen unlikely but given Carlton also have only 1 pick in the first 3 rounds and that being pick 1 I can see them doing something like what I suggest to try and get another pick inside the top 10 as there are a few teams they could do a deal with.
Hence why we should offer our 1st(2019) for 24 & 29.

Some kids are lucky.
Sam Walsh isn't.

Out of curiosity what would 24 & 29 be equal to? And on a seperate note assuming Blakey, Thomas and Quaynor are all bid on before 24, what does 27 & 32 equal as a more accurate trade?
Not sure. _RT_ is the man for that kind of stuff.lol

Pick 24 and 29 is the equivalent to pick 10. That shows how unlikely a trade like that is for us.

It would have to be something like pick 24 and and pick in the 40s for our 2019 1st rounder to be a good deal for GC.

Blair Hartley was on the Talking Tigers podcast, and said somewhere around the 45 minute mark that we'll be looking to have 38 on the list, rather than 40.

Probably no DFAs, just draftees. They want to use the picks in the 60s.

I'm finding this off season really interesting. I reckon the club is taking a long term view, trying to rebuild the bottom end of our list with the aim of building a continuation of a finals team post-Cotch etc. And the way we've cleaned out $ will be interesting next year. Do we have another big $ player in our sights?

No disagreement about the Suns current state. This draft however is loaded with top end, generational types in the top 8 from all accounts. I don't see why you'd give up those types for a kid next year that is a long way off.

If I were Carlton I'd jump at the deal.
If I were Suns I'd keep 2,3,6 or arranging a trade with the Crows for 3 in exchange for 8,13. Everyone knows both SA clubs want SA talent, so I'd try and play then against each other.

With 2,6,8,13, knowing SA teams would have 3,5,10 ahead of us (likely to be all SA talent) I'd look to pickup: Lukocious, Smith, Hatley, Clarke.

Addresses their key fwd issue;
2 gun midfielders, one of which is 190+ the modern inside player;
Clarke ton replace Scrimshaw & Kolodjashnij with Hanley & Harbow ageing.

I wouldn't be opposed to them staying with 2,3,6 and taking both King boys 2&3 and then best MID at 6. You'd assume Walsh(1), Smith(4), Rainkine (5).... It'd still be a talent player.

It is an interesting period for us.

Hartley said he / the club subscribe to the standard position that you build the bulk of your list by drafting the best available kids then trade / pay for positional needs. And when you pay for one position, you're necessarily robbing yourself of the funds to pay for other positions. Further, he talked about player retention being under-valued.

Reading between those lines, I wouldn't expect the club to be targeting another big $ player in the short term.

It also sounded like the club is walking a line between treating fringe players as well as possible for "club culture" reasons and turning over enough list positions to find our next generation.

My guess is that we'll see more kids come and go over the next few years, with less big recruits and DFAs looking for a new home. With Fly and Xavier Clarke as development coaches, could be a real area of competitive advantage for us, but hard to do well without high-end draft picks, if we keep winning games.

I would give up 37 as well and get a future 2nd /3rd off the suns.
We'd be better off looking at a deal with the Dogs where we traded 37 & 64 to them for 32 which is the same points value if there was a belief that West doesn't get bid on before their first 2 picks at 7 & 27.

Another possible option is Brisbane where we trade 37 64 & 68 to them for pick 30 if they believe that McFadyen isn't going to be bid on before 30.

Finally the outside chance would be our 4 picks to WCE for 20 & 22 if we wanted to try and get say O'Halloran & Smith. The problem with that is our next pick wouldn't be until the 70s.

From next year the AFL are enforcing that clubs need to take 2 first round picks over any given 4 year period, if we traded away next years pick we kind of back ourselves into a corner a little bit with regards to flexibility.

Personally I'd rather stick with what we've got and back in our recruiters to find the gems that they have in recent years with the later picks. Doing the phantom that I've done there is definitely some talent to be had later in the draft that suit our needs and leave us in good position for the next few years with regards to trading.

Be interesting next year's list management. We were sorta lucky this year with Hampson,Griffith & Drummond.
Next year will be tighter.

Makes sense. However, we also seem to be clearing up cap space. Which could be a retention strategy. Or it could be that we have someone else in our sights and we need future $. We'll see. But although I am super happy with how many depth players we're losing. I reckon that we aren't losing best 22 (sorry Reece, you lost your spot to Tom) and we are going the draft in a year with many good mids is a good sign.
