List Mgmt. 2018 Draft Watch - Depth Chart In OP

No drafting light bodied players who are going to be project players with our first pick, we all know how Corey Ellis turned out.
Yeah but Corey Ellis is not the rule. To me, he was a surprising selection even back then.

You take the most talented at your first pick. If they are ready, then great. If they are project players, then still great. As long as they are talented it should not be a big deal.

Trading, rookie selections and the picks after the Round 1 picks is where you can stay away from lightweight project players if you are in Premiership contention IMO.

On the podcast Blair said we plan to take 4 players in the draft, giving us 38 senior listed players. Does that mean we need to have 6 rookies? Every club has 44 players on their without category b rookies so I assume you have to have 44? If that’s the case we will need to take 5 rookies this year as we only have Baker at this stage. Derik Smith doesn’t count as he is a category b.

According to the afl website, there's no minimum number:
"Rookie lists are now recognised as a key list management tool and designating a minimum number of rookies is no longer necessary as it is purely a club decision."
So I think that means we could in theory go with a list of 38 + Baker next year. Unlikely though, the cap is tight but not that tight.
Will probably re-rookie Chol if the rookie draft is devoid of tall talent.

The average number of players cut from each teams list this year was 10.1. Imo we get it wrong as supporters as all teams are in perpetual rebuild.
GCS this yr have cleaned out 16 players thats an awful lot in anyones language.

Ive had a look at our list and outside of juniors we have another 9 or 10 who are either in decline have not done a lot or are still very inconsistent.
The number of players from each club that were delisted/traded/retired this yr
Adelaide - 9
Brisbane - 10
Carlton - 12
Collingwood - 8
Essendon - 6
Fremantle - 11
Geelong - 11
Gold Coast - 16
Gws - 7
Hawthorn - 10
Melbourne - 11
North - 12
Port - 11
Richmond - 10
StKilda - 9
Sydney - 11
WCE - 9
Footscray 10

In previous yrs the average has been around 8 to 9.

There’s considered to be more talent this year so it would make sense that clubs held off delisting last year in anticipation.

These 3 are the NGA kids that could be looked at as rookie picks.

My first real crack at doing a phantom draft and so far I've done the first 2 rounds. With live trading happening this year. I've made 1 trade but it's a big one with Carlton trading pick 1 and 2019 R1 pick to Gold Coast for picks 3 & 6 in the draft this year. I've done this based on Carlton going to take Walsh withthe Suns are going to take Lukosius and Rankine if the picks stayed the same. By making this trade the Blues get 2 cracks at the early talent in the draft and can bolster their midfield talent.

I have the Saints bidding on Blakey at pick 4 with the Swans matching, Tarryn Thomas(North) Issac Quaynor(Pies) & Rhylee West(Dogs) are also matched bids in the first round. In the second round Connor McFadyen(Lions) Bailey Scott(North) Will Kelly(Pies) Keiran Briggs(GWS) & Jarrod Cameron(WCE) are all matched bids.

*Disclaimer - I don't watch these kids, all my information is based on reading opinions on the kids, plus I have done depth charts on every club and tried to combine best available with list needs to put players in order.

Hmm, O Halloran and Sparrow looked just okay, nothing special

You’ve got gws taking Zac Butters twice.
So I have, hard to keep track of everyone.

Looking back it should have been Damon Greaves as I was looking at a long term Shaw replacement for them.

Gez loved the good old days you got pick 17 stays at pick 17 and our second round pushed in to the forties.I don't like that system at all I know free agency plays a part in it.
It's not free agency that does it, but the father/son and academy kid bids. This ensures that they are going at a spot where they should rather than the old days when a kid who might be a top 10 talent went with a pick in the 40's.

Hmm, O Halloran and Sparrow looked just okay, nothing special
You're not always going to get special players. The key is to get kids who are going to be solid players. O'Halloran looks to have all the tools to be a very good player at the top level. When the next pick isn't coming until the 40s again you're hard pressed trying to pick up stars, but if you can get yourself players who can develop into solid types with a good chance of being a long term player that is what you want to do.

It's funny when most people sit down to start reading up and looking at the kids they start thinking I'd like to have him with our first pick and this potential gun with our next pick and at our 3rd pick we get a gun who might slide. But when you sit down and look at all 18 clubs taking kids you soon realise that your chance of landing guns with all your picks are pretty bloody slim.

I've made the above list off of about 3 weeks of study, pretty much cashing in on the work those that do watch the kids have done, with the aim of doing nothing more than giving people an idea of who goes where and why we might not get Stocker & Smith with our first 2 picks like many seem to be hoping we will do.

The Suns aren't worried about the Blues taking Lukocious, so I don't get why they'd bother trading for pick #1. If they wanted Lukocious and Rainkine pick 2&3 will likely get that done anyway.

Else they'll be able to get Rozee and Lukocious or in the worst case where Carlton take Lukocious, they get Walsh + Rainkine. Given the state of their midfield after the draft, I can't see them giving to picks away for a future season pick.

Hoping Tom Lewis is around our second pick from SA bull inside midfielder.
Chance he could be there for our 3rd pick, which won't be as late as people think if all the bidding happens as some think. Our 3 4th round picks could all be before the mid 60's.

What i hate about it is a kid like Heeney, instead of going to Brisbane who at the time could have really used a kid like him, goes to Sydney who are already a contender & it boosts them up even further. Another example this yr, Blakey is F/S eligible at 2 Clubs but Sydney get to jump them via thier Academy, which is meant to be for kids who are from Non AFL parts of the Country...
It massively compromises the Draft every yr but the media won't touch it because it's a Northern State Club...

As for the argument they'd be lost to AFL if they didn't go to the Swans? spare me! if they want to come home the Swans can trade for them like the Vic Clubs etc have to do to get get thier kids back home

Suns are in a massive rebuild, so trading for Carltons first next year, likely to be a top 5 pick, helps them spread their rebuild. Using what I put forward they'd have picks 1 & 2 this year and picks 1 & say 3 next year. Will it happen unlikely but given Carlton also have only 1 pick in the first 3 rounds and that being pick 1 I can see them doing something like what I suggest to try and get another pick inside the top 10 as there are a few teams they could do a deal with.

As for the argument they'd be lost to AFL if they didn't go to the Swans? spare me! if they want to come home the Swans can trade for them like the Vic Clubs etc have to do to get get thier kids back home
Blakey has been living in NSW since birth IIRC so is a kid from a non AFL part of the country. The fact that his dad played 100 game for 2 different clubs just means that the kid gets to pick where he wants to go and Sydney still has to pay the price that another club bids for him, which means that the swag of picks they gathered later in the draft are in effect useless.

For example if the Saints did bid on him at 4 the Swans lose 3 second round picks to get him, so while they get him they move down the order again, which then moves other clubs move up earlier in the round, but others get pushed back. At the end of the day it actually works out. Had the system not been changed the Swans could have got Heeney for a second/third round pick, now that would have been stuffed as they would have also got access at another kid with their first pick as well.

I have added as an extension in Firefox and works on the following sites (according to the info they give).

Some alarming permissions you're giving to the Addon, no?

"The extension can read the content of any web page you visit as well as data you enter into those web pages, such as usernames and passwords. Extensions requesting this permission might:
  • Read product and price information from a page to help find you the best price on items you're shopping for
  • Offer a password manager that reads and writes details of your username and password
  • Provide an Platinum Membership - https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/account/upgrades ;) by reading the content of each web page you open to find and remove ad code"

Just how safe is this to install? I assume many of us use the same browser for ebay, and banking and stuff... What does it do with the "usernames and passwords" that it reads?
