Not sure if new names pop up now. List managers have been talking for weeks now so I am hopeful that SOS has a rabbit in his hat. We need mature bodies and not Mullet types.
I like the idea of Jack Martin but at the right price. I wonder if we can sneak in an steal Lachie Neal from Freo, Buddy style?
I'm waiting for the SOS magic show...

Well that was fun now wasn’t it lads! The bloody scum got him to

Still very tough to get the absolute elite when you're down the bottom with 2 wins. He got to sit on the bench with 5 of his mates and still watch GWS smash Carlton, which couldn't have helped our chances.

Still think Essendon haven't sorted their major issue.....inside mids. They look spectacular on the outside but once a side gets them in close they always have issues.

kudos to the bombers, they clearly know how to pitch better, you would think a career carlton fan like shiel would see we arent far away and be keen to come.

Disagree wholeheartedly, I would be shopping that pick around like no tomorrow for an established player still.
Clubs know it is on the table now and I'm certain we'd be fielding offers for it as we speak.
We take Walsh at 1 this year and we've taken top shelf talent from 4 drafts in a row, that's enough for a while.
we've missed out on Shiel we need some mature players that can take the pressure off Crippa and help us win 6-8 games next year.
As good as Setterfield and Walsh may be they like Dow, LOB and SPS are still 2-3 years off being consistent AFL players, Bolts won't survive the heat.
agree we need a top quality ready made mid desperately if for no other reason than making the place appealing for Kelly !!

Turns 26 next year, only speculating, but may have thought by the time we're up there competing for premierships his career coming to a close. Essendon closer in his mind. Though I don't believe that for one second.;)

I think it's true and fair to say their "window" aligns better to Shiel's expiry date. He'd have been great for us, he'll be fantastic for them. Our build is going great. You know we will go super hard at targets next year.

I'd still like some cannon fodder midfield bodies, hopefully we can pick up something solid.

Been all for using the draft to get us much young talent in, throw Sam Walsh in there, another year into the ones we've got and next year will be the right time to strike.

So this from AFL.com.au.
As part of the deal, the Blues will send picks No.26 and 28 to the Swans in exchange for pick 13.

That earlier draft selection will then be sent to the Crows in exchange for McGovern, along with the rights to mature-aged SANFL prospect Shane McAdam.
That seems way overs to me, surely something more to come our way.

We still need mature big body Mids and I really don’t want to see Dow, Setterfield and Walsh getting smashed each week. If we can pick up some cheap cover like Barlow and/or Bell. I also think we need to focus on getting in some more small forwards, I would like to keep McAdam but he looks like he’ll be a crow. I would also go after scrimshaw he could free up Docherty to play midfielder as well. Essendon and North have shown that if you can show improvement player will come to you. I’m hoping we can finish 9th to 12th or higher next year.

**** that! I think McAdam and pick 42 is still overs.

What is Setterfield worth? Been injured for 2 years but has could be a star. He hadn’t played as much football as Kennedy & Steele but isn’t as injury prone as Ahern. So may be pick 26 for Setterfield and pick 69.

We got shafted in that deal

Neale is an interesting one because AFAIK he doesn't actually have any ties to Brisbane...they just seem to be the only club seriously trying to poach him for some reason...

It seems to be a move he's considering due to the extra money and longer contract terms than Freo, so i'd love for us to join the race. Might not be too late as Essendon also came in late for Shiel.

That's the disappointing thing...i think our horrendous season cost us Shiel and has no doubt set us back a bit.

Even a 7-8 win season probably would have been enough to convince him we're not too far away.

Docherty. Jones. Plowman.
Marchbank. Weitering. Williamson.
SPS. Ed Curnow. O’Brien.
Fisher. Charlie. McGovern.
Fasolo. Harry. Pickett.
R. Kreuzer. Cripps. Dow.

I. Kennedy. Murphy. Simpson. Setterfield.

Who is pushed out? Rowe, Thomas, Lamb, Jack and Polson.
Who is stiff to miss the 22? Jack, Macreadie, Garlett, Lamb, TDK and Lang.
Need a big 2019 ... Cuningham, Lang, Garlett, Pickett ...

Yep. This is the part that worries me. The AFL wont give us a priority pick because they think our list is good enough. But we can’t attract players like Shiel because we don’t have the wins on the board because our list isnt good enough.

My question is: what happens next year? Well probably only win 4-5 games again. Do the AFL give us a pick then? At what point do they admit we need proper help? It so frustrating knowing we can’t dig ourselves out of the hole without draft concessions.

I think i'm pretty good at not being too Carlton bias and to me that looks like a pretty good starting 22...certainly very talented.

Glaring issue is the un-balanced age profiles with lots of young kids and then a few oldies...as we know not many in the important 23-28 bracket. I reckon if our kids were 2 years older and our oldies 2 years younger we'd be in top 4 contention...sad our list was managed so poorly pre-SOS.

Also personally not a fan of having Jones, Plowman, Marchbank & Weitering in 1 team...i think we need to drop one of them for a smaller running player.

What established players are out there that are worth our future first? If there was anyone real good for sure but I'm not sure there is. It's likely to be a fairly good pick, we trade it and there's no chance of getting Kelly next year at all. We can't be burning top picks, we don't need average players we need players from the top shelf.
as we found out today, the top shelf is just too far to reach from the bottom shelf. essendon used guys like josh green and shaun mckernan to improve their list and make themselves incrementally better so that they're be in striking distance of elite talent. we need to assemble enough players to put a professional football team on the park before we even think about shiel/kelly/ etc

but yes our future first is certainly too valuable to trade for someone who doesn't immediately improve the team.

Probably a blessing in disguise , makes it easy too keep pick 1 for Walsh !!
Blessing is an understatement, he is a good player not a great player. Blues need to use the cap space like they did with Lobbe, help other clubs that have cap issues, and pick up draft picks. Freo want to get rid of Bennell, I think most clubs are weary of him and don't think he can turn himself into an elite talent. So trade a 3rd rounder to Freo, and get bennell and a 2nd rounder. If he stuffs up boot him. you move up in the draft and could turn the pick into a much higher one, and you may have a player that turns his life around and becomes a ripper. It doesn't have to be Bennell but if you can't land a very big fish, find other ways to maximise your cap and profit through the draft.

Another thing I just thought of is why don't clubs get free agents on a 1 year deal. As an Example, let's say Carlton has 1.5 mill of cap space and gives shiel a 1 year deal, making him a free agent next year and free to join essendon, if the essendon offer was 900k per year, This would mean Shiel would get 600k extra than he got and, both GWS (this Year) and the Blues(next Year) get a compo pick. as far as I'm aware an offer like this would give Shiel more money, GWS would get a lesser pick because the deal is only 1 year or they have to match and keep shiel, giving them cap issues, and then Blues would get the first rounder next year as he signed a long term deal with essendon.

Exploit the rules as best you can

I think we are fixing much of the stuff that players are looking for: Russell, Bolton is a player's coach, facilities, changing assistants.
Get between 5 and 8 wins this year and the ship starts to turn.
