what player in the AFL has a guaranteed selection clause in their contract ??I would take BJ under one proviso.
He certainly isn't guaranteed selection. There is 100% a spot for him on our list though, potentially a similar deal to S Mitchell with coaching?
So Goddard would be taking Coffield's spot?If we went into 2019 with something like this, how would we all feel...?
B: Geary Austin Webster
HB: Goddard Carlisle Roberton
Ruck: Lycett Hannebery Steven
C: Billings Steele Acres
HF: Gresham Battle Long
F: Lonie Bruce Membrey
Bench: Ross Clark Marshall McKenzie
Emerg: McCartin Sinclair Coffield
- Only reason I have Bruce at full forward is because his best is better than Paddys.
- Battle gets the nod at CHF as he's an aerobic beast & will explode next year I reckon
- No Newnes, no Dunstan as I suspect they'll be trade bait
People think the AFL bought in FA to help the bottom clubs, it was actually bought in by the players association to give players more options at moving clubs. So it’s actually done exactly what it was meant to do, albeit very negatively. Think you’re right though, there should be some changes next year. Lowering the amount of years it takes to become a free agent would be a good start.I think we’ll find some changes to FA next year. It’s been a distaster and done the complete opposite to its original intention.
precision kicks can undo speed... our biggest issue is the ability to hit a target not to run faster ... our losses to WB and Ess were compounded by the fact when we got the ball we couldnt hit a target so the overlap killed us .. we hit that target then the opp can be as fast as they likeCould you imagine our 3 recruits are BJ, Lycett & Hanners. Ha ha, we would be the slowest side in history. Good luck chasing around teams like WB, Ess, GWS, Rich, etc
Read the tea leaves, the AFL are desperate to reduce congestion / Stoppages and create a more open, fast game. If you can't run fast all day then you better be a contested beast. BJ is neither & Essendon know it.
Being a fast team isn’t directly related to foot speed.Could you imagine our 3 recruits are BJ, Lycett & Hanners. Ha ha, we would be the slowest side in history. Good luck chasing around teams like WB, Ess, GWS, Rich, etc

I'm a no to Goddard as he looks physically slow and getting slower by the week. I don't think our already pretty slow team could support a 34 year old with no leg speed and who is a defensive liability.
I'd prefer to talk Jarryd McVeigh out of retirement and add him as the 'Hodge/Lewis' like on field coach. Unlike BJ he's still got decent wheels & is playing pretty good footy.
Fair enough. But I don’t rate Coffield anywhere near being best 22 at presentSo Goddard would be taking Coffield's spot?
That's a no from me.
i think the big issue is the message gets lost out on the field from the coaches box BJ will be that onfield coach delivering that messageA player spends 118 mins out of 120 mins without the ball. The bloke doesn't chase, literally does not tackle, sheep-dogs out the back and yells at young players instead of teaching them by example. Get him as a coach sure, but let's not resort to taking other clubs dregs.
God that back line is slow , against the tigers we would be F-----dIf we went into 2019 with something like this, how would we all feel...?

And i thought i had a man crush on Fraser all those years ago , you have taken it to a new level with BJ , get a room you twoi think the big issue is the message gets lost out on the field from the coaches box BJ will be that onfield coach delivering that message

Me either, on current best 22, Goddard would be taking Sav or McKenzies spot.Fair enough. But I don’t rate Coffield anywhere near being best 22 at present
Not sure that makes sense to me to be honest. FA isn’t working at the moment so you want to abolish FA compensation? That would only hurt the lower clubs even more.Lowering the amount of years it takes to become a free agent i think could easily have the opposite effect.
Gold coast had Lynch for 8 years to essentially prove that they could become a successful club. They didn't. If the FA age was lowered they probably only have 5-6 years to prove that they can be successful and he probably leaves earlier. At least with the current age for FA it gives bottom dwelling clubs a chance to fully rebuild by the time they hit free agency. If the clubs can't then i think that is on the club.
Personally, i think changes that make sense include giving teams who have missed finals for a certain amount of years an end of first round priority pick. It isn't high enough to incentivize full blown tanking as no team is going to think, "lets tank for another year so that we can get pick 20", as the payoff for making finals is too great.
I think FA compensation picks should be abolished. On the one hand this means that West Coast wouldn't be rewarded for not being able to afford Gaff by getting an extra first round pick. Instead they would have to choose whether to match (which they probably can't for financial reasons) or let him walk for free. On the flip-side, bottom clubs who have more salary cap room are much more likely to be able to match on restricted free agency. This means that if they do decide to then leave, the team can either match the offer (which they will be able to do financially) and so will be able to force a trade which will mean that the top team gives up something more than just cap space.
Right now it's too much in favour of the player dictating terms.
As yawkey says, the clubs should be able to trade players as they see fit and before FA in order to get the best return.
Also... In the case of Lynch, tigers should forfeit their first round.
surely it's goddard>gearySo Goddard would be taking Coffield's spot?
That's a no from me.
Needs a summer in the weights room and a big pre season, but I'll be disappointed if he's not best 22 by next year.Fair enough. But I don’t rate Coffield anywhere near being best 22 at present
Maybe. If GC force Richmond to trade then they probably get 2 first round picks or a player and a first round pick. That is comparable or marginally worse than a single compensation pick, however, it also means that Richmond are weakened in the trade and don't just get Lynch for free. Not sure that makes sense to me to be honest.
