Not my point.
You weren't certain in your post, and it seemed to contradict what Kenners has said. I dont read it as definitive.
Raymann clarification would be appreciated.
Afl.com posted an article yesterday about injury in various lists. It confirmed bunts and Kennedy not ready to start r1

For me the injury to Bonar's hammy might just knock him back a little in terms of his chances of lining up for R1. He would need to be at his best fitness wise to be in consideration and this might just have him on the outer. Wonder if this firms up MDB or setterfield as favourites to be locked in for the first few rounds (although MDB may already be locked in some best 22's)

Pardon the intrusion Giants fans but thought I'd hop in and put up my thoughts on your best 22

FB: Heath Shaw ~ Aidan Corr ~ Adam Tomlinson
HB: Nick Haynes ~ Phil Davies ~ Zac Williams
CEN: Lachie Whitfield ~ Callan Ward ~ Josh Kelly
HF: Toby Greene ~ Jeremy Cameron ~ Tom Scully
FF: Tim Tarranto ~ Jonathan Patton ~ Brett Deledio
1R: Rory Lobb ~ Dylan Shiel ~ Stephen Coniglio
INT: Jacob Hopper ~ Will Setterfield ~ Ryan Griffen ~ Harry Perryman

  • Backline is maybe one tall too many as others have mentioned. Tomlinson or Haynes are replaceable with a Perryman or Adam Kennedy once he returns.
  • Midfield doesn't need too much tinkering. Kelly's inside game has come on massively so he has a genuine case to be a rover/ ruck rover but I love his outside game and delivery inside 50.
  • Guys like Hopper, Setterfield, Scully and maybe Greene form a strong core of the second string midfield.
  • Forward line doesn't change too much from the best on paper in 2017 apart from Smith missing.
  • With that 22 I think Tomlinson may need to be moved up the ground and possibly even relief ruck for Lobb if Patton can't do it. It's well known how gifted he is athletically so he could become like an extra taller mid at ground level.
  • Around the mark at selection are De Boer for his pressure inside 50, Kennedy as i mentioned, Brent Daniels could surprise as a small forward. See him as a direct list replacement for Smith, was able to catch one of his 18's game for Country against WA and he really caught my eye as a nippy small forward like West Coast wanted from the '17 draft.
  • Taylor and Shipley have the benefit of some development in the NEAFL and shouldn't need to be called upon before they are ready. Bonar is excitement plus and I think will stand out in the NEAFL. Interesting to see where he settles as a player against men, in the thick of it as a burst from stoppage midfielder or protected a bit on the outside/ forward half more.

No intrusion.
As likely as any ventured at this stage mate, I'd love to see Tomlinson unleashed as a tall mid as I think he'd kill it but his versatility will probably continue to prevent him being left in one spot for too long.

Interesting input on Daniels, tks. Seems to be an early positive vibe about Langdon from Phil Davis as well. I guess at 21 and a couple of years in the WAFL he has a head start. Troubles me a Bit he wasn't a target for you guys though. We have a small forward opening I think and whoever gets it will need to impress in the off season.

Tomlinson is a head scratcher. He looks like a perfect wingman with legspeed and a huge tank. I think he isn't strong enough at ground level contested ball though. Frankly I shudder at the thought of him looking for a spot again. He was very good in the PF as a half back runner.
The real problem is he started the year as the no 2 keystopper with Haynes loose. Corr has usurped that role and now I think Davis and Corr are on a par and are both flexible enough to play short or tall. When we played Corr on Kennedy at Spotless the pecking order was clear.
Not Sure what the outcome will be particularly against teams that dont bat deep in terms of tall forwards.

I hope we find a spot for De Boer, guys like him are useful when things are going to hell, but every year our core group matures. We extended his contract for a reason though.

Teams overlook players in their own backyard a lot. Remember when Gold Coast didn’t want Zorko and they had first dibs on him

Appreciate you reminding me of Zac Langdon.

Like you said his got some senior experience behind him at WAFL level with Claremont which means he’ll probably be around the mark for that smaller fwd - mid role as well.

Probably ahead of Daniels in terms of being ready made and you can tell he wants it which is a great thing. Maybe he could replace Taranto or Perryman in my 22 with a good pre season.

As for West Coast and Freo bypassing him I don’t think it was due to not being interested it was more about where he was drafted.

Think it was early fourth round so let’s say the 60’s. If it came down to West Coast’s last pick and Langdon was available we’d have drafted him.

Same can be said for Freo who went with a mature age smaller fwd late in Switkowski.

Thought I'd give this a go, don't worry if you disagree, I've never got one of these correct:

FB:
Heath Shaw - Phil Davis - Adam Tomlinson
HB: Nick Haynes - Aidan Corr - Zac Williams
MF: Lachie Whitfield - Callan Ward - Josh Kelly
HF: Toby Greene - Jeremy Cameron - Matt De Boer
FF: Tim Taranto - Jonathan Patton - Brett Deledio
RU: Rory Lobb - Dylan Shiel - Tom Scully
IC: Jacob Hopper - Stephen Coniglio - Will Setterfield - Jeremy Finlayson

EM: A. Bonar - H. Himmelberg - Z. Langdon

Really wanted to put Williams in the forward line. Laid 10 tackles when he played there in the SF against WCE and allowed the other forwards to take advantage, but with Wilson gone, I think that'd leave us too slow on the rebound.

Not sure where Griffen's at at the moment. Naturally, if fully fit he moves into the team, but that's a really tough injury to get over and I fear we may have seen the best of him.

Finlayson might seem like a strange choice, but has been very good in the NEAFL and offers versatility, playing defence, wing or pinch hitting up forward. Good tank, speed and pressure player and at 196cm, think we'll see a fair bit of him in 2018.

I've probably forgotten someone obvious.

Been looking over some clubs lists before the season starts and a question jumped out at me: who the **** is your ruckman next year?

Are you guys going full-time with Lobb or is big Dawson going to get games (surely not)?

Likely its Lobb being setup as number 1.

But Big Dawson performed well enough when called up last year.

Can’t see Lobb and Simpson playing in the same team.

If they do feel the need to go in with a second ruck it might be Keeffe?

We’ve had two years to realise our forward line is too tall. Cameron and Patton is more than enough.
The 2 games in 2017 we played with only Jezza and General up front were our best performances I thought.

If Williams has done an achilles:

Shaw Davis Haynes
Tomlinson Corr Deledio
Whitfield Kelly Scully
Greene Cameron Coniglio
Taranto Patton Langdon
Lobb Shiel Ward

Hopper Griffen Himmelberg Setterfield

I'm not opposed to seeing Griffin or Deledio coming out of defence, especially now with Williams seemingly missing a large chunk of the year.

We will miss his run, just a worry though with Shaw, Griff and Lids ageing

I think Lids himself, prefers to be coming out of the back half more than he does that small forward/high half forward, Stevie J replacement type role we were thinking of. Obviously not as quick as either Willo or Zac but composed and experienced (and a top notch user of the ball)

Cumming plays that running half back role as well but I would have thought he’s not quite ready for the step up. Who knows, he might surprise, I hope he does. If it was only one gone I doubt he’d get much game time, losing both increases his chances of playing.

Pez is the other, but I’ve always seen him more as a Shaw, not a Willo or Williams. Also, may not be quick enough (yes I do see the contradiction of having suggested Lids and then knocking Pez for speed)

Setterfield is a mid, he’d be playing out of position, needlessly.

Anyone else feel that Buckley might take Williams spot? Don't know why else we would have recruited him other than for this exact scenario.

A reasonable question to ask. I did contemplate whether he would be a player in the mix for one of the Wilson/Williams spots - but ultimately felt not. The main reason is that the club stated that they picked him up to be a pressure forward (and secondly because his kicking out of defence for Carlton was poor). However, as I've said elsewhere, I think that GWS has overdone the recruitment of fast pressure forwards, and I never entirely believe clubs' press statements (yes, even my own club!) so now with two rebounding defenders missing I would not be surprised if he is trialled as a defender rather than forward. Nevertheless, I think that the quality of players otherwise available (Setterfield, Perryman, Whitfield, Cumming etc) - all selected much higher than he, even with him having played some first grade - gives them the edge in taking the vacant positions.
