Yep, his kicking can be a bit off at times. Maybe that role that Williams played in the SF against WCE might be his go (almost more tackles than disposals). Personally, I wouldn't waste Perryman, Setters, Cumming etc as a pressure forward. Better another year of development in more creative positions IMHO, but I'm just another armchair fan with faith that the club have a plan to go a week further than this year.

Buckley nowhere near good enough kick for that role. Has to be Deledio, Whitfield or Perryman.

Anyone else feel that Buckley might take Williams spot? Don't know why else we would have recruited him other than for this exact scenario.

I would have Kennedy as my first choice to slot in down back and I see as the closest replacement but as he may not be match ready at the beginning of the season I think other options could be Perryman/Buckley/Cumming and rotating a mid back to provide an opportunity for Setterfield to spend more time around the ball
All dependant on the preseason form and working out team balance
I can't see them adding a tall down back although the eagles away game had Davis tomlinson mohr and corr down back and also I think Reid had a good game last year as a defensive tagger on someone so he could be an option as a lockdown defender type to free up Shaw to run and bounce

I had Adam Kennedy as my choice to replace Wilson, but obviously won't be available for the season start. I expect he'll push hard for the team once he's ready - but naturally someone (well two actually, now) gets first opportunity to lock down a spot.

Would be very disappointed in Lids/Whits/Perryman were used in a negating small forward role. They're far too good for that. Sticking round pegs in square holes has been our biggest weakness in the last two years.

As someone who saw a fair bit of Taranto as a junior I reckon he should be your man to throw down back. On the very few occasions he has played down back he has shown a style that emulates Williams well.
Yep, can see this as potential solution. Taranto is so versatile, definitely has the speed and skill to play that role

Hmmm, definitely an interesting observation - thanks. We haven't seen too much of him outside of heavy traffic, so I'm now intrigued as to this possibility. Definitely has the tank & the elusiveness from what we saw last year; good tackling, hands and kicking too, I guess it's just the speed/acceleration aspects that I'd wonder about (similar questions for mine on Perryman).

Many names are being thrown up and i think it shows that their are many options and we will find out when the real stuff starts and it is another challenge for the coaches to work through and as someone said earlier it does the them time to try different players and see what mix works best but it does open up a spot in peoples best 22 so for round 1 I would like to see

Shaw Davis Corr
Whitfield Tomlinson Haynes
Scully Ward Shiel
Greene Cameron Kelly
MDB Patton Deledio
Lobb Coniglio Hopper

Taranto Perryman Griffen Lloyd

The last 3 bench spots are the most open and I think it needs to be a balance of experience and pace, I like Perryman and feel he will be better for the games last year and another preseason hopefully he can increase his involvement in the game and from reading up he doesn't have the breakaway pace of some halfbacks but hopefully he makes up for that with good decision making and disposal, I would like to see Griffen around for the early games so hopefully he has a good preseason although I could see Setterfield or Reid being named in his place, Lloyd is named as I don't think Langdon or Bonar will have the required fitness early in the season but I would be happy to be proven wrong.
With the mention of Lobbs groin in the article during the week he is an easy swap for Simpson
HH is unlucky but I would like to see a 2 tall forward set up and Tomlinson and Patton backing up Lobb in the Ruck

Of the names floated so far this is the most interesting IMO. I feel that Whitfield is more valuable roaming, Perryman is too slow for a like for like replacement, and the old guys aren't too inspiring, so I wouldn't mind seeing Tim get a go.

I do like the idea but then you are creating a space in the forward line and whether that is easier to fill from those on the fringes of the best 22 than the def/mid position and also if it is better for a second year player to continue where they played the first year

I'm not that convinced we have to have pace in their replacements, sure it would be great, but good decision making, clean quick disposals and a willingness to apply pressure are valid replacements.
Agree with this, while pace has been a big part of our HBF role for a while it's not necessary. Deledio is smart enough to position himself so lack of pace isn't a hindrance.
Taranto is one I floated on Reddit and personally, I think it'd be better for his career to develop on the HB line, letting other youngsters come in to fill a mid/fwd spot (Setterfield or Bonar at this stage). He's a strong mark, fast and a good kick, only thing that'd be concerning for him in that role would be his positioning

Positive sounding article and it sounds like he is ready to play an important role in the side after last years injuries and I am sure his experience will be important through the year including off the field
Names mentioned to fill the Williams role are Perryman, Cumming, Deledio and he does mention himself as an option. And no mention of my preferred option Whitfield so I am likely off the mark with that idea

I'm still interested to see what they do with the small forward role. Toby was always able to do well when Stevie J was on the ground and hence why one or the other would always do well.

Toby has started to get a lot more attention now

I think there is a still a hole to fill there this year

Last year when we went smaller we did better. Can't just go straight back to being to tall in my opinion. Will be interesting

Lobb moving to 1st ruck with someone like tommo relieving him would shorten our arcs. Someone like Langdon would be a favourite to take SJ spot

Best 22:
Corr Davis Haynes
Shaw Tomlinson Griffen
Scully Shiel Whitfield
Greene Cameron Taranto
??? Patton deBoer
Lobb Ward Kelly
Deledio Hopper Perryman Coniglio

Williams and Wilson both being out brings Perryman into the side (and Griffen back from injury, as he played down there in previous years).

There's almost definitely that spot for a small pressure forward. Given our focus on recruiting (Daniels & Giles-Langdon & D. Buckley) it's also almost definitely completely up for grabs. Daniels is injured so I'd back ZGL at this stage.

Setterfield and Bonar could sneak into the team with a few injuries but at this stage I have them on the outer.

At this stage I think we are all throwing darts at about 6 names for the last 2 spots and it will also depend on how they approach the season with Deledio as well and it wouldn't surprise me that he misses the first few rounds with some extra conditioning and has a run in the NEAFL when it starts
I am more confident on Griffen being ready for the start of the season as his injury last year was impact not soft tissue
If anyone does make it to a training session I am sure most of us would be interested in any kind of report back
