If it is true he is now looking to leave, he has managed this poorly. To stand there at the BNF and instill such hope in fans and the club and to see such a public celebration on social media by our young players and to see how much it meant to them he stays, this is now a shit move, sorry. The fact Barrett insinuated this never stopped in the background really perplexes me, did he make that speech to avoid an awkward moment knowing he would do this during trade period? if so, I have some issues with that.

It frustrates me that people in society aren't allowed to change their mind, be indecisive or even make mistakes. People aren't perfect. I guarantee you aren't. Yet we hold them to a higher standard.

If he said one thing and was still actively working on the opposite, then yeah that's shit. But you're basing part of your judgement on the wording of a guy who at worst lies and at best embellishes for exposure. By his own admission Beams has wavered between staying and going during the year. That he should potentially change his mind again is suddenly ludicrous to a lot of people, and it really shouldn't be.

It’s disappointing but he genuinely is struggling and the support of family is for his wife as well as him. He doesn’t want to leave he just doesn’t think he can play where so much reminds him of his dad. It’s mental health and he has been open all year of the effects it has had on him. No one should be that surprised.

Collingwood is familiar, has close friends there and Melbourne is home for him.

I want him to play for us but not if it destroys him inside and effects those around him. As TBD said, you stand up for your values in your most challenging times and we stand for our players and their families. This means we negotiate with the Pies to find the deal we are satisfied with and wish him well and thank him for his service.

If that deal can’t be done he knows we have his and his families interests at heart. He can play for us and our young players know that the club stands up for what they say.

I am very happy Fagan is our coach in this. We need a level head to stay clear of emotional traps.

Well said. And if this happens I think people need to accept it's going to be for under what they're expecting.

The comparison between Gibbs and Beams on trade radio was interesting. So many similarities between the two. And adelaide gave two first rounders. Not saying we will get that. But one would hope it's not far off.

If Beams goes, I reckon it's worth taking 5 to the draft and run away from the Neale trade. We may as load up on players in the draft, without beams I can't see us pushing the 8 with or without Neale.

What pisses me off the most is not that players break their contract, it is that they nominate a particular club.
If he wants to come back to Melbourne, then he should be able to play with the team that can give us the best offer.
Happy for him to go to St Kilda for Seb Ross.

I hope he stays, but if not, we need to get another mid in.

People are allowed to change their mind. I love Dayne and wish him all the best if he leaves, I am not going to obsess over it. I think it would appear he did the BNF speech with this potentially still bubbling away, and as you said 'its shit'. That's it for me, I am not going to sugar coat it, this is a shit outcome for Morale, our trade hand, retention, fans.. it's a shit outcome and it has been managed poorly, I think Noble would be feeling that this morning. Mental heath issues calls for compassion which we have all given him and will give him, but does not give you an absolute free pass from any judgement or from accountability on decisions that effect others around you.

Collingwood would be around top 4 again next year so 2 late firsts which are probably pick 18 this year plus 14-18 range next year is hardly overs.

We can hardly expect that and then also argue that Neale isn't worth 2 first rounders.

If he is to go then it needs to be now. Endless speculation over this for the next 2 years is simply not worth the pain for us when retention will always be a sore point.

His value off the field and the relationships he's built and his contribution to the cultural shift at the club cannot be underestimated to me. And I will hold him in the highest stead because of those things.

But, our young guys need to find success without him while we are still building so they know that they can. Him going in 12 months from now will be worse IMO if we start to find success and he's a major part of it. Build the team out of long term players who can grow together - and experience wins together without the doubt of who will leave.

Rip the band aid off. Do it. And do it without all the "contracted" hypocrisy that just makes all clubs and supporters at this time of year look stupid.

I’ll be honest. I haven’t heard anything myself on the situation but I had somewhat prepared myself for it.

I’d be very disappointed, not only from a playing perspective but an off field one. His BnF speech touched us all and reassured us that he would see out his contract with us. I understand he is battling right now. Like I said, disappointed but he has been broken since his father passed. That has been very clear. Whether his career finishes at the Lions or another club, I wish him the best and thank him for his help to turn this club’s culture around.

This is my biggest disappointment less then two months ago he reassured everyone he was staying. He’s robbed the club of time to prepare for a replacement. It’s the last minute change of mind that’s the issue. His word seems to be worth little.

I hope this isn’t true...
If so, let’s hope we get more than pick 18... has to be a player involved I would have thought

I can’t quite get my head around the “if Beams leaves, Neale’s value to us is diminished” claims here?

I mean... why? It feels like throwing the toys out the cot.

Very good midfielder maybe leaves, but we have the option to bring in an equally good midfielder with a better age profile.

Taking the Lions goggles off, I have a feeling that Noble & Fagan knew about this weeks in advance.

Not to mention the event by Berry and his family to raise money for cancer awareness, Beams was there to support them as well. He would have had no doubt loved the feeling of being back in Victoria, spending time with family and friends. Maybe he rushed his decision at the B&F and spoke on media about it too soon. Things like these happen, and no doubt the club has been extremely supporting and accommodating of Beams' needs. As TGL said earlier; it’s mental health and he has been open all year of the effects it has had on him. No one should be that surprised.

It will still suck to see him go (if he does), but doesn't mean that we'll take extreme unders for a top 10 Brownlow player. I fear for the young Lions like Witherden, Rayner, McCluggage who have been close to Beams and helped him out during his worst times, what the off-field effects will be. A few of our young players have already been approached by Victorian heavyweights, the only thing we can do is create a family club culture, and with that, a winning culture. Don't think this changes our strategy at all, but this would mean we probably need another experienced midfielder from somewhere.

To be honest, I always look forward to the draft, and if this gets us back in the top 25-30 picks of this year's draft, I'd be okay with it. Have to look at the bigger picture sometimes.

We have professionals running the club now, I trust their decision making will be in the best interests of the Lions.

If the Beams story is true, then I'm not happy with him.

He's not that mentally unwell as to be lacking in responsibility to the club that has stood by him and who he professed to love and was going nowhere.

Seems a bit weak to me........if all this is true.
If he is that weak wouldn't you want him out?

Yeh its abit odd. Neale will add with or without beams. Absolute worse case is beams leaves and Neale doesn't come.

Really agree with the end of this. It’s time to rip the band-aid off.

Neale joining is actually a god send. Imagine if he wasn't coming and we were facing losing Beams?. I just said 'less exciting' because it leaves us even in covering Dayne IMO, our midfield is still thin. I think, as dalsanto was saying this morning, it means forecasting big improvement next year has to be tempered a little bit. I'd just like to see us get on our bike and see if there is any other mids out there that we can throw some of Beams $800k at. If we can land a decent mid int he next week to come up with Lachie, I will be happy.

That was a few weeks back now. The club wouldn’t have suddenly just had this sprung on them yesterday though. Fans were whispering about him still being on the move over a week ago, and journos started to get wind of it last week too.

I reckon Nobes has known in advance of trade week and would have been working with Beams on the best timing to announce it as part of our trade strategy.

Wouldn’t surprise me if talks with Collingwood are quite advanced already.

This is depressingly believable.

Unfortunately, Collingwood aren't about to go out and trade good players to get something they can give us for Beams, so if this leak has come from us and we're getting ready to trade him then it's likely to be for what Collingwood currently have, which isn't much.

The Pies' earliest pick is #18. Best case scenario we get that and their first round pick next year, but they might not be inclined to deal themselves entirely out of the first round of the draft in consecutive seasons, so we might not even get that much.

It makes me wonder if Freo were conscious of this when they asked for a pick in the teens in addition to pick 5, assuming that story was true.
