Pretty sure all our rookies signed deals to stay on as rookies
We can still upgrade them though, and we'll have to for at least one unless we plan on taking three players in the draft.

I wonder what the record is for biggest gap between second and third pick...

Young looks amazing on that highlights vid. Like Salem with better depth on his kicks.

Begs the question though, should you use pick 3 on a specialist non KP player. Looks like a specialist defensive rebounder to me. Most previous high picks in that position have been flops - Plowman, Buntine, even Weitering isn't that good really.

Can't draft him there unless you think he can damage up the ground too. That unreal kick he made in the national champs was from a wing position. If he can break games open like that from behind centre wing at senior level he probably deserves to go pick 1. It's a risk but hopefully it pays off.

We could always look to Geelong with pick 8 for 14 and 32 on the night if needed. Not really worried about points tally but for those that are pick 8 = 1551 and 14=1161and 32= 584. Weightman might be there then or even Stephen, he has heaps of pace.

I think so. Bigger risk in ranking them for needs in the first round. If Young is a good chance to become a star of the comp across half back, he’s worth pick 3.

Plenty of utility types go well in the top few picks, provided they can spend some time in the midfield. Hodge and Goddard stand out as pick 1s. Whitfield started at HB.

I'm kind of sceptical on Young.

Needs to have very demonstrated midfield potential. Plowman, Buntine, Weitering are good examples, and I'd add Francis too.

Francis is a lovely kick, lovely mark but jesus he's frustrating as a player, I wouldn't want Young to end up like him, floating around the HBF failing to influence games. There's been plenty of other fantastic kicking rebounding players at junior level that don't have enough strings to their bow and fail (Chris Johnson and James Strauss say hello).

Don't know enough about Young personally but just some observations echoing the past couple of posts.

I think what Young brings is something that is really lacking across our list and that is a beautiful kick. Maybe Salem has one, but it’s not something that springs to mind often when you think about the current mfc. Wattsy certainly had one, he didn’t do much in his time at mfc but it was nice when he had the ball around 50 and you knew he would just hit a target. I don’t get that feeling from any of our current players so it would be nice if Young could bring that safe as houses kick back to game days. Might even have a flow on effect through the team, who knows?

We have a few glorious kicks IMO. May, Fritsch, Melksham, Salem at times, even Hore I reckon has a great peg. Trac is a very good field kick, as is Oliver on the rare occasion that he's in space. Problem is we play a game style which makes this irrelevant at times. In 2015 Brayshaw was pulling off some incredible kicks, but has been conditioned to just throw it on the boot because we don't spread well enough to make it worth attempting to break the field open by foot.

Anyway a back 6 of May, Salem, Lever, Hore, Young and Jetta is six very good field kicks. If you push someone like Tomlinson, TMac or Petty back to play as the third tall you can release one to distribute as the spare defender or come up the wing.

I don't know about that, if we draft two midfielders with these picks they aren't going to play midfield anyway. Or they will take minutes from Harmes, Brayshaw etc. Who instead will have to play on the flank.

We have always gone with the idea of just drafting all midfielders and then playing them out of position when we have too many. Might be time to try something else.

Not to mention we already have Tom Sparrow as well. Hopefully if he was good enough to debut R1 this year he's good enough to start the season again.

Not sure that we need to worry about Young. From what I’ve read, he has spent plenty of time on the wing and he’s just as damaging there. He sounds perfect for what we need and has been rated as the best player at that pick.

This is exactly it. Not only is he in all likelihood the 3rd best player available, he's also the player with the assets we need the most. 'Best available' or 'horses for courses' argument is irrelevant; he ticks both boxes.
So why am I nervous that we won't select him?

Those are all pretty good kicks, perfectly serviceable afl standard kicks just none of them stand out amongst the afl’s elite kicks though. I think Salem has potential but doesn’t make good decisions or take risks with it. I forgot about May, he’s a really sound kick. But I’m hoping that Young can make those game splitting kicks that he demonstrated in the U18’s in the big time. I don’t think we have anyone in the team atm that has the vision and the skill to pull that stuff off.

Also on a personnel level I think it makes sense to draft Young. Hibberd’s rapidly approaching the end and judging by how we essentially kicked Frost out, I reckon the coaches have had enough of fast runners and just want dependable kicks coming out of the back half. Hopefully Young proves to be good enough that he helps transform the way this team plays because you’re right our game plan results in low level kicking skills across the board, and our list has the potential to use the ball a lot better.

I think this makes sense. Letting Frost go maybe shows that we are going for Young. And not trading in a small forward may be due to us looking at Weightman. I'd be happy with these two. Both also fill needs.
