2019 AFL draft - Jackson at 3, Pickett at 12 and Rivers at 32

I'd be asking their pick 11 next year and 15 as a start. Maybe we can throw 97 back to sweeten the deal

That’s more like it. Good thinkin’ Hoss. 3 and 15 this year could net us say Young and Gould, and we enter the first round in 2020 with a decent pick at no.11. Quite like that. The Suns might go for it too if they’re dead keen on another top tenner this year, which they say they are.

I don’t like going into any draft, year on year, without adding at least one high quality youngster to the list. Ours and the Suns’ interests may just dovetail here.

I'd be keener on 3 in the top 20 this year, we need to improve the list NOW

Far out I knew Gould had a fair bit of size on him, but 105kgs is pretty bloody big for a player who is 192cm tall.

The risk with Gould is that he gets stuck in that no man’s land defender’s height where he’s 5cm too small to play on a Tom Lynch or Charlie Dixon, and a little too cumbersome to play on a small. He’s a man-child beating up on string beans at the moment. He can obviously play but there is a chance he becomes a fairly pedestrian player at AFL level.

I can't really comment on Gould as I haven't seen him play but what I will say is that typically players of his height are more those 3rd tall type of players. So if he can't play that role, then he better be able to play key position at the next level otherwise he'll struggle to make it.

I disagree about Gould just beating up on kids. he's been playing League footy for Glenelg in the SANFL against men and playing well. he needs to shed some kilos and get fitter, but he would be the perfect fit to replace Frost in that 3rd tall role imo.
he's probably even an essential type, if we plan on having Lever float around as an interceptor. we need someone who can body up on the strong key forwards, while also giving us some run when it hits the deck to compensate for the loss of Frost. unless you feel Oscar McDonald can do a better job of it that is.

Don't think height matters anyway. Neville Jetta in his prime used to occasionally match up on tall forwards and beat them. He's what, 180cm? If you're good enough you're tall enough.

Either that or CON was just nuts.

Didnt Toumpas play league in the SANFL for a couple years before being drafted?what were Goulds stats against men compared to u18s? I dont want Gould weve spent 3 years of first rounders on defenders so i dont want to go reaching for an undersized heavy defender. When therell still be players we need at 8

I wouldn't use 8 on him either.
I still reckon we're a good chance to split pick 3 for a couple of later picks. take a small forward and a defender with those split picks. use pick 8 on whatever kid slips through to us, Young, Kemp, Serong, Flanders or Ash.
a draft haul of say, Kemp, Weightman and Gould would be good enough for me.

or if we keep 3 and 8. i'd take young at 3, then whoever else we can get as a forward with 8.

They are saying Gould went into overdrive celebrating the Grand Final, weight increased by 8kg prior to combine and that could be the reason he tested poorly. Some have him closer to pick 20 than 8 and suggest he is slipping big time. Just me, but I think if we trade pick 3, our trade/draft period will be closer to a bust' I think your top end talent stops at 5/6 Rowell, Anderson , Green Kemp, Young, possibly Jackson, then it evens out through to 20 odd. Still Young and Kemp with a bid on Green for me.

fu** Garlands overrated here. Played a couple good years when we were dog shit lol then hung around way too long.

Agree. Very average performer over a long period but wasn’t on his Patrick Malone there. Lacked urgency and dash.

He prefers to go by Paddy.

I get what you're saying regarding "top end talent" but how tf can anyone tell? Unless anyone here went to watch u/18 games regularly, took notes and spent time with the players, we're all basically guessing. Sure, the media will report on certain players, and we've all seen the highlights videos picked out for 3 minutes.

2 years ago, hawthorn picked up James worpel at like 50, and he wins their best and fairest this year. Meanwhile, North pick Luke davies-uniake at 4 who looks to have very little stand out features. There are countless examples of players in the 15-30+ bracket being better than the top 10. Until they're off mummys teet and living in the big smoke full time, no one knows how they'll turn out.draft picks are so overrated. Pick the kid who runs fast, jumps high and kicks well, but make sure there are decent campaigners around him coaching and supporting.
