Even if there is a higher risk Stephens goes. I am happy the club took him. If the club are excited by a player then I rather they back themselves to keep him settled. Than keep passing on talented players out of fear.

And looking at Stephen's history, he left Mildura for Adelaide on a high school scholarship. So as a teenager he left home for an interstate educational or football opportunity. Now this is where it leads to. He can play for a well run AFL side and earn decent money.

Plus he knows Hayward quite well, actually think from that point it's a sound choice.

Port are no certainty to take him in fact I doubt they even need an inside mid. Geelong won't as they favour kicking ability. If we were doing a trade up I feel we would have done it tonight to get Kemp. Doubt we will bother with about 8-10 really good talents there.
Agree.

I'm not saying we won't but there has been an emphasis in the last 3 years especially with us on guys who can genuinely kick, not sure Robertson is that player.

I'd be all over Jeremy Sharp if he's there.

Unless #caesar88 knows him and has been told by him personally that he wants to stay in Adelaide, I think he is talking crap. He has no history of living in Melbourne and, let's face it, why would you WANT to live in Adelaide?

Plus he's good friends with Hayward already. This will ease the transition anyway!

I wish I could share your optimism Wolftone but Stephens is gone. We might as well accept it now. Was a decent career with us but will become a superstar at another club you watch.

Hopefully we'll get pick 9 for him
Without a doubt your worst ever post Ceasar, what facts do you have to back this ridiculous post up?

How many swans players make a mass exodous for the doors 2 years after being drafted?

Are all our draftees heading home in 2 years, we may as well boycott tommorow if this is the case.

I am excited by our pick 27. There is still a lot of interesting players available. And only five live picks before ours.

22 Port Adelaide
23 Brisbane
24 Adelaide
25 Adelaide
26 Geelong
27 Sydney

I am guessing Worrell (Port/Geelong linked defender), Robertson (Surely Brisbane/Geelong don't pass) and Gould (Surely Adelaide uses one of their picks on him ) get taken with three of those five picks. That hypothetically still leaves the following players.

Bianco
Rivers
Rantall
Jones
Sharp
Williams
Taylor
Ralphsmith
Schoenberg
Byrnes
Chirgwin
O'Neill
Taheny

Rantall would be my ideal pick. But there is also Rivers, Schoenberg, Byrnes and Chirgwin who can play inside midfield.

Sharp/Bianco might be tempting. Sharp is a running half back and Bianco is small but rated a very good kick. Though we would hope to then pick up an inside mid with pick 32.

Taylor, Oneill and Ralphsmith might be more speculative picks we take if still available at 32/44.

If Robertson or Gould unlikely slide to our pick 25. Surely we take them.

Stephens is just what we need I reckon. Looks the goods. I’m excited to see how he goes!
I reckon it's a sound selection with good upside. The kid is listed at 69kg and apparently has only learnt the tackling side of the game in the SANFL. If anyone thinks he's soft it's because there is nothing of him. It's easy to build bulk and train kids to tackle. Yet he has still been impacting in the midfield. Sound choice

Well im bloody happy with Stephens, he seems a very likely type. I was hoping for Flanders or Serong but after watching Dylans highlights i was very impressed, seems to be the exact type of player we need. i dont really get the Gaff comparisons though he seems to have a bit more pace and x factor than Gaff.

Now lets hope we can get Gould, Robertson and Shoenberg with our next 3 picks.

Why is he gone? He's from Mildura, no go home factor. He has a friend, in Will, at the Swans. He may just turn into another Fearless Fosdyke, a man who with LRT, should have won the BOG in a GF.

No, Caesar's right, he's gone. He'll be just like that other skinny kid who came up from the SANFL and left the Swans after playing only 303 games.

Note to self: sarcasm doesn't translate well over the internet!

Of all the prospects still on the board heading into the second round, my order of preference would be:

1. Trent Rivers (big-bodied but classy midfielder, tough leader type, outstanding in the WAFL this year, would be a steal at 27)

2. Deven Robertson (good clearance mid with excellent hands and vision in tight, his lack of elite foot skills has now been overblown when you consider that guys like Lachie Ash went at pick 4!)

3. Brock Smith (key defender, strong as an ox, easily the best one-on-one defender I saw in the U18s, plays like Heath Grundy - does such a good job you forget both he and his opponent are even out there)

4. Will Gould (Sir Dane-like defender, plays like a bit of a general, though don't rate one-on-one as much as Smith)

5. Jeremy Sharp (a more athletic version of Gould, with more flair, a bit like Aliir Aliir but without the size so not sure how much use he'd be)

He said family is huge for him and has been important for his growth.
Perhaps why we didn't take Flanders.

If still there at our pick I think Rantall will be our next choice.

I reckon we might look at Byrnes with one of our next few picks. I had heard that firstly he is close with the Florent family and that we did plenty of background work on him including speaking to Mrs Florent to get her view of him.

No Schoe? Rivers video indicates he's a defender - and looks bloody good, but still.... Smith for our 3rd pick would be good.

What sort of player is he?

Inside midfielder

Height
181cm
Weight
80kg
Current Team
Sandringham Dragons, Vic Metro

DRAFT ANALYSIS: “As consistent as they come, Byrnes is a hard-nosed and tireless small midfielder made of leadership material.”

YOU would be hard-pressed to find many more consistent Under-18 players in 2019 than Sandringham Dragons skipper, Ryan Byrnes. The competitive midfielder held his own in the star-studded Dragons midfield early on, before taking over to become the number one ball winner and earn a sole Vic Metro outing. He averaged 25.4 disposals across 15 NAB League outings after averaging a tick over 20 in his 12 bottom-age games, while also helping school side St Bede’s to its first ever Herald Sun Shield title. Importantly, he was the one to stand up across what was a disappointing finals series for Sandringham, not wavering from his usual output and displaying outstanding on-field leadership to cap off a great year. He may not have the eye-catching traits of some of his Sandringham and Vic Metro teammates, but Byrnes has quality in so many aspects and will provide great value for any team looking for a safe bet after the second round.

STRENGTHS:

Accumulation
Consistency
Five-step burst
Work rate
Dual-sided
Leadership

IMPROVEMENTS:

Kicking at speed
Scoreboard impact

A typical passage of play from Byrnes usually involves aggressively prizing the contested ball, breaking clear with his deceptive pace and delivering inside 50. There lies Byrnes’ biggest strengths and one area of improvement, outlining his clearance winning ability and nippy five-step burst, with the all-important kick forward undoing his good work at times. Byrnes improved his 20m sprint time down to 3.024 seconds to really highlight that acceleration, but his testing results do not so-much credit his on-field agility or endurance. That is not to say he tested badly in those areas, but Byrnes’ agility in traffic and ability to cover the ground are both key features of his game. His work-rate bodes well for winning a good split of inside and outside ball, while solidifying his status as a true accumulator. You know what you are going to get from Byrnes too, as his effort is consistent over each week – having over 26 disposals in nine games and just one outlier of 13 touches. He managed to step it up in the finals as well, willing himself on to average 28 disposals across the three games while his side was down on form. One standout trait that Byrnes has compared to many others is his dual-sidedness which he shows time and time again when exciting a stoppage, able to lean to either side of his body to kick inside 50.

One of the areas Byrnes could further extend his game to is the scoreboard, with much of his play coming in setting up others. His kicking on the run needs improving, with the depth and accuracy not quite there as he breaks away towards the 50m arc. In adding penetration and a finished product, Byrnes could easily become an extremely damaging clearance winner who can bomb long goals from the middle. As it stands, Byrnes is a part of the raft of players hedged for selection just past the second round, but seems a hard-working type and will be sure to just sharpen up his game at the next level given he is already relatively solid across the board.

Yes we should get a reasonable pick from that lot. The next 3 before our pick are Adelaide twice then Geelong. Surely Adelaide will pick Schoenberg as one of their picks. I think it’s possible that Robertson will still be available at 25. The talk is that the slide was because he is average disposal by foot. That said he was still adjudged as Larke medal winner. Of the last 10 winners 3 are stars of the game and one a future star. The others are established quality players. Are the Larke medal judges idiots??? Can’t believe that.
I can see Geelong taking Robertson. They need replacements for the aging Selwood and Dangerfield.
