Note to self: sarcasm doesn't translate well over the internet!

Of all the prospects still on the board heading into the second round, my order of preference would be:

1. Trent Rivers (big-bodied but classy midfielder, tough leader type, outstanding in the WAFL this year, would be a steal at 27)

2. Deven Robertson (good clearance mid with excellent hands and vision in tight, his lack of elite foot skills has now been overblown when you consider that guys like Lachie Ash went at pick 4!)

3. Brock Smith (key defender, strong as an ox, easily the best one-on-one defender I saw in the U18s, plays like Heath Grundy - does such a good job you forget both he and his opponent are even out there)

4. Will Gould (Sir Dane-like defender, plays like a bit of a general, though don't rate one-on-one as much as Smith)

5. Jeremy Sharp (a more athletic version of Gould, with more flair, a bit like Aliir Aliir but without the size so not sure how much use he'd be)
Don't really get the Ash hate. He's the 2nd best player in the draft if you ask me, havn't seen that kind of explosiveness and stregth in the draft since dusty and danger. And a disposal efficiency of 80+% i think he was one of the most reliable kicks if not the best. I think we would've nabbed him if GWS didn't, i rekn stephens was 2nd choice.

Either way i'm happy with the Stephens pick, about time we start moving away from the bump and grind slow type mids. And with the academy kids coming in next year i don't think we need anymore mids. Next step should be nabbing a few of these silky indigenous kids that have proven to be the difference over the last few years. That Pickett that melbourne picked up looks the goods. Was shattered we missed out on Ian Hill last year. Have a feeling GWS pantsed us 2 years in a row trading for the pick ahead of us and taking our 1st choice. Taylor needs to be our pick 27, fingers crossed.

I look at the 2nd round and think there are a couple of very good players there... but I look at the clubs above us, they’re generally good judges of talent.

I’m expecting Robertson, Macinness, Rantall, Rivers, Worrell and Bianco to be gone. That would mean Gould, Schoenberg, Jones and Taylor will be available. There’s some good talent there.

Inside midfielder

DRAFT ANALYSIS: “As consistent as they come, Byrnes is a hard-nosed and tireless small midfielder made of leadership material.”

YOU would be hard-pressed to find many more consistent Under-18 players in 2019 than Sandringham Dragons skipper, Ryan Byrnes. The competitive midfielder held his own in the star-studded Dragons midfield early on, before taking over to become the number one ball winner and earn a sole Vic Metro outing. He averaged 25.4 disposals across 15 NAB League outings after averaging a tick over 20 in his 12 bottom-age games, while also helping school side St Bede’s to its first ever Herald Sun Shield title. Importantly, he was the one to stand up across what was a disappointing finals series for Sandringham, not wavering from his usual output and displaying outstanding on-field leadership to cap off a great year. He may not have the eye-catching traits of some of his Sandringham and Vic Metro teammates, but Byrnes has quality in so many aspects and will provide great value for any team looking for a safe bet after the second round.

STRENGTHS:

Accumulation
Consistency
Five-step burst
Work rate
Dual-sided
Leadership

IMPROVEMENTS:

Kicking at speed
Scoreboard impact

A typical passage of play from Byrnes usually involves aggressively prizing the contested ball, breaking clear with his deceptive pace and delivering inside 50. There lies Byrnes’ biggest strengths and one area of improvement, outlining his clearance winning ability and nippy five-step burst, with the all-important kick forward undoing his good work at times. Byrnes improved his 20m sprint time down to 3.024 seconds to really highlight that acceleration, but his testing results do not so-much credit his on-field agility or endurance. That is not to say he tested badly in those areas, but Byrnes’ agility in traffic and ability to cover the ground are both key features of his game. His work-rate bodes well for winning a good split of inside and outside ball, while solidifying his status as a true accumulator. You know what you are going to get from Byrnes too, as his effort is consistent over each week – having over 26 disposals in nine games and just one outlier of 13 touches. He managed to step it up in the finals as well, willing himself on to average 28 disposals across the three games while his side was down on form. One standout trait that Byrnes has compared to many others is his dual-sidedness which he shows time and time again when exciting a stoppage, able to lean to either side of his body to kick inside 50.

One of the areas Byrnes could further extend his game to is the scoreboard, with much of his play coming in setting up others. His kicking on the run needs improving, with the depth and accuracy not quite there as he breaks away towards the 50m arc. In adding penetration and a finished product, Byrnes could easily become an extremely damaging clearance winner who can bomb long goals from the middle. As it stands, Byrnes is a part of the raft of players hedged for selection just past the second round, but seems a hard-working type and will be sure to just sharpen up his game at the next level given he is already relatively solid across the board.
Byrnes sounds like a perfect fit for us. Must admit Ive never read his bio before. His strong points fit our needs like a glove. In particular his high accumulation and five step acceleration. I don't care if an inside mid doesn't kick goals. That not their job.

If we managed to get Schoe I'd be over the moon. AA, State MVP, fast, tough, extractor, good at kicking the football, looks like could step in right away if injury hit any of our mids....
Crossing every finger and toe I have.
How Richmond thought Dow was a better prospect will be one of the great mysteries of the 2020s I reckon.

Not understanding all the "shock and surprise" around our selection with Stephens at 5 Adelaide was going to take him at 6 right so??

Number five draft pick Dylan Stephens may be in for a culture shock after being drafted to the Sydney Swans.

AFL: Sydney to be a shock for Stephens

Sydney has pulled off the first shock of the 2019 draft
Sydney Swans throw first major AFL draft curveball to snatch star SA
prospect Dylan Stephens

Thats the headlines from multiple articles i have found its weird and bizaree

Shock = we didn’t tell them what we were doing in advance

Really hoping we could snare Robertson. Dont like the chances of him still being there at 27 but would love to have him.

Trade our future first for the next pick and take Robertson

Just NO

Our future first could be a top 5 pick which would be live.

Robertson is likely to be there if we want to go that way at our next pick

Flanders came across as a knob in his interview on the gold coast website. "What can fans expect to see from you on the field?"

"Explosive- burst player.... turn a game on its head"

Jesus christ Gold Coast what are you thinking?
I'd rather he said "I'm a mediocre hack that floats in and out of games with poor kicking skills", that would really get the Gold Coast fans excited

I’m not saying that there is nothing coming back our way, we could trade our first with a second coming back and take Robertson. Gives us points for our academy players. No way will we be getting ahead of the draft next year with our 2 academy players

We don’t even need Robertson that much and you want to trade 3 arms and a leg for him. He’ll be there at pick 27 (or whatever our second end up). We need an inside mid sure but there’s a number of them. No need to trade up. Would have only traded up for a slider like Kemp in the first round.

Disagree on next year. Hypothetically if we have pick 4-6 next year we could easily have a live pick. Do what GWS did this year if need be

I find this comment from Beatson interesting. I would assume that Stephens was always the man we wanted.
“But with the ability to trade for selections ahead of you, you’re always a bit loathed to let too much information get out in case a club desperately wants that player and they can get back in front of you".

The phantom draft for today;

As expected, they have Geelong taking Robertson just before us and like most, they have us taking Taylor. I still think we should be looking at an inside mid. Neither Gulden nor Campbell fit that mould.
Honestly, I don't see us picking any of the guys mentioned in that article, especially after they got Flanders so wrong. Imo the reporters just seem to be throwing darts at teams now, in a general order.

Very Interested to see who falls to our picks, and who we choose.

Great interview with Dylan and another with his parents. Seems like a great kid;

Apparently Carlton were keen on him at their pick too which will explain why they traded theirs. Great draft pick by the club.

MacInness and Mead will chew up picks too, we might get 2 from the above list.
It still means that there are only 5 live picks before ours. The two you mentioned will have their bids matched and even though it means our pick becomes 29, only 5 from that list will be taken before us.

It is unlikely Robertson will be there at pick 27. Also we do need him as our midfield got beaten week in week out last year. Even Gold Coast beat up on our midfield.

Then take another inside there’s plenty of them in this draft
