Do you have to match a bid with your next pick or can you use picks from later in your draft order?

I think pick #6 is worth more than pick #22 and pick #26

The second option moves that pick six into more later picks.

We can't field 30 players, we need elite players in our 18 spots on the field.
And if you want quality over quantity then you just combine those two picks. (and perhaps others) to upgrade them - or maybe using a future pick.

If we were to get #12 and #18 I'd try and get #15 using future 2nd and #26. Assuming we get #22 for Langdon then that'd leave us with #7, #12, #15, #18, #22. With that hand we are guaranteed to get 4 top 22 players plus Henry.

But wouldn't it be more likely Freo still having #7, using #12 for Henry (assumed matched bid value), and still have #18.
What am I missing here?
#6, #7 and Henry at #12 will be better than #7, Henry at #12, #18

Soon as i heard the saints leak of our demands on a 1st rounder and 2020 1st plus from saints it was obvious saints had agreed to split with giants. They prob gave us 1 last chance to take 6. 12 will be before Henry bid imo. Would be easy to swap 12 with 9-11 if we are sure a bid will come. 20201st would get us into end of 1st round after henry bid which is a bonus

So if Henry is bid on at 11 and we have 12 we don’t have to use pick 12 we can use later picks to make up the points?

12 gets used. We get pick #55 back for it.

A bid at #11 becomes Henry and #55 for our pick #12

#6, #7 and Henry at #12 will be better than #7, Henry at #12, #18
But we were never going to get #6 & #12.
We had #7, was possibly going to get #6 (& 2020 futures), but now will have #7 and get #12 & #18.
I'm confused why people think #6 is better than #12 & #18. (12 & 18 is worth more on the points table which is important to Freo for Henry match bidding).

We can match the Henry bid at #12 with 1014 points anywhere. That's pick #26 and #49.

We have been given the chance to get a first round pick in Henry for a couple of much later picks. Nobody is trading #26 and #49 for pick #12 but we would have that win.

If we went in with #6, #7, #26 and #49 we walk out with #6, #7, #12 and #72

If we go in with #7, #12, #18, #26 (four picks), we walk out with #7, #12, #18 and #26

I don't think an upgrade of our last pick is worth downgrading the first pick out of the top ten.

People need to accept that we are going to have to burn a pick on Henry at some point. He doesn't come for free, just a slight discount. And if we have a gap between his bid and our next pick, we go into deficit, and then push the following pick back. The simple strategy is often the best ... just get as many picks as possible in the top 30.

One example ... what would you prefer?

2 x top 10 + 2 x 20's= Stephens/Robertson/Henry/Taylor
1 x top 10 + 2 x teens + 2 x 20's = Robertson/Rivers/Henry/Sharp/Taylor
