TBH, I thought the AFL viewed it the same way. I don't know 1 way or the other though
The following is taken from the 2019 AFL Draft Nomination booklet:
Nominated Football Payments
A player (other than a first-year draft choice or a second-year player) may specify in the nomination form the football payments he will require over two years if selected at a Draft Selection Meeting.
By specifying these requirements, the player will be taken to have made an offer to the Club which selects him to accept employment in return for the specified payments.
The Club that selects a player who has specified payment requirements will be deemed to have accepted the offer.
Immediately following the Draft Selection Meeting, the player and the Club will execute a Contract of Service providing for the specified payments.

Further, here are a few sections from the AFL Rules 2019 document:
7.4 Nominated Football Payments
A Player (other than a first year draft choice Player or such a player in his second year), nominating for the Pre-Season Draft may specify in his nomination the Football Payments which he will require if he is drafted. The provisions of Rule 6.3(b) will apply to any Player wishing to so nominate to any Club which selects him at a Pre-Season Draft Selection Meeting.
(b) Nominated Football Payments
(i) Offer and acceptance
(A) A Player, (other than a first year draft choice Player or such a Player in his second year), may specify in the nomination lodged pursuant to Rule 6.2(c) the Football Payments which he will require if he is selected at a Draft Selection Meeting.
(B) By so specifying the Football Payments he will require, the Player shall be taken to have made an offer to the Club which selects him at a Draft Selection Meeting, to accept employment in return for the Football Payments so specified.
(C) The Club which selects a Player who has specified the Football Payments which he will require shall be deemed to have accepted the offer set out in (b) above.
(D) Immediately following the Draft Selection Meeting, the Player and the Club to whom (c) above applies, shall execute a Contract of Service providing for the Football Payments specified by the Player in accordance with (a) above.
(E) If a Player nominates his Football Payments he must do so for a minimum period of two years.
(ii) Payments actually paid For the purposes of the Total Player Payment provisions contained in these Rules, the Football Payments nominated under Rule 6.3(b)(i) (whether or not such payments are made) shall be treated as Football Payments of the Club which drafted the Player for the period specified by the Player in the Nomination Form unless the payments actually paid to the Player exceed the amount set out in the Nomination Form in which case such greater amount shall be treated as Football Payments for the purposes of the Club's Total Player Payments.
Paragraph 6.3.ii is really important here. This means that a club can re-negotiate the player's contract after the draft, but for the originally specified payment schedule will still apply for TPP purposes.

I've heard a rumor that with Sloane, both crouch brothers and Gibbs not being dropped and playing his natural game under a new coach you guys are going to be far, far, far more competitive than the football world are making out.

That’s the big unknown really, on paper we still field a rather strong midfield and defence. The forward line is talented but largely inexperienced. It’s not all doom and gloom.

Behind Jack Watts, Jack Martin is the second most over rated early pick in AFL history?

$600k is massive overs. $1M is lunacy.
Paying Jack Martin 1 million dollars is draft manipulation.
AFL should wait for Carlton to do it then fine then 10 million, put Martin into the PSD and strip them of two years of first round draft picks.

If ever there was a year for a rebuild and to come last it is 2020.

Get Pick 1 (2nd rounder being ~Pick 19) and Luko and get to keep all our other picks. Not to mention if we lose players, we get AFL compensation, which if they consider them worthy of a 1st rounder, they end up being pick 2.

Glory be. That would be our quickest way to a flag.

If only Adelaide has the balls to play youth all year and not get scared after a few losses. We should definitely do it and f##k the AFL over big time.
Though like another poster said, the AFL will stop it straight away as it will actually help our club. They don’t do that

The Gibbs Trade has not reached it full conclusion yet, we still need to add pick 23 this year. So we should wait on that. Before classing it as a total loss.
That trade is fascinating to see how many times the picks associated were used. It truly highlights that there is a need to wait a few years to work out who got the better.

At this time Carlton has received thru using those picks, L Obrien, M Kennedy, T DeKoning and M McGovern.
While the Crows have received, Gibbs, Hamil, MacAdam, N McHenry and 2019 pick 23
Carlton in Front as 3 of there players are playing AFL Football while we only have Gibbs playing AFL,
We gave them 9 and 19 for essentially Gibbs and 23 if I read that correctly.

geez I hope our 23 is better that spud Liam stocker.

Look how well it worked for the Suns?

You cant tell me they didnt give up in the second half of the season, from a betting perspective I made a killing going against them at almost every opportunity I could.

Im not suggesting here that we tank or give up. What I am suggesting as you mentioned is play the kids and play Nicks game plan and lets see how this all plays out.

I definitely dont want a kid who is performing well in the SANFL to not be given a good run of games in the AFL to prove himself.

If we happen to come last or near bottom, there is plethora of prizes that awaits us.

Disn't nicks say he wanted to go with a smaller forward line built more on pressure. I recall he taled about only 2 talls in one interview (5AA?)

Interesting comment made by Nicks in his presser when appointed as coach .. We will be a contested team and we want players that will put there head in the hole folloed up with an off the cuff remark " the players will be happy about that" I can't exactly remember the context but the comment about the players really pricked my ears, looks like Sloane had already had a word with the new boss about how shyt the old regime was!

I’m pretty sure 23 went to GWS last year which got us Hamill and our current pick 23.

We essentially gave up pick 24 (2018) for pick 30 (2018) and 23 (2019). Prevented a bid from us on Briggs.

The quality of this trade is often overlooked when assessing our draft day performance.

Can't see that going down well with Atkins!

We gave them pick 10 and 16 and 2018 2nd ( 73 aswell but minor pick)
Recieved Gibbs, 2018 2nd and 2018 3rd (77 aswell)

But the thing most have missed in this trade with Gibbs,
Is they traded pick 16 and 40 with the Western Bulldogs for picks 28, 30 and 2018 2nd rd.

One year later the Crows 2018 2nd along with Western Bulldogs 2nd and McAdam was used to trade for McGovern and a Crows 2019 3rd rd
We then converted those picks into 13, by adding pick 40 which we got from Carlton in the Gibbs trade.
So apart from a 2019 3rd pick to Carlton, Every other pick Carlton and the Crows used to Get McAdam and Pick 13 Fogarty were from that Gibbs trade.

Like I mentioned the Gibbs trade has been one of the more interesting trades, and for the Crows the end result is currently sitting with Gibbs, Fogarty, Hamill, McAdam and pick 23 this year,

I haven’t seen the direct quote but there was some mention of it. End of the day, personnel available and form will dictate gameplan. Or at least it should.

Richmond were famous for their small forward line in ‘17, but that was borne out of lack of genuine tall options. This year they won the premiership with Riewoldt, Lynch and 2 genuine ruckman rotating forward/bench.

If Nicks is coming in saying “I’m only ever playing 2 tall forwards” then he’s already a failure. A coach who can’t adapt his gameplan will always struggle, especially longer term.

It may be that he only wants 2 dedicated tall forwards, but doesn’t count the 2nd ruck in that or something.

Yep this comment stuck out to me too. I wasn't sure how to interpret what he was saying when he said "the players will be happy about that". For a second I thought he was being sarcastic and joking about the players begrudgingly having to do more contested ball training. I'd rather believe your version though.

Nicks comment was that his sense is that we need to be a little smaller ahead of the ball

I tend to agree and dont think his comments imply that he wont be flexuble

Only problem is our big guys don’t compete hard enough in the air for the Smalls to be effective

Talk is that Martin will put a massive 7 figure amount on a single year deal to price the Suns out since they have cap issues and to scare Melbourne away. He'd then immediately sign another extension at the Blues with the correct money to even the whole thing out.

This again, yawn. AFL have made it abundantly clear that the Luke Ball method will not be allowed again.

Our deep forwards were generally Betts and Murphy last year, I’m not sure that was the problem... ;)

But yes, in general I agree.
