It's interesting that the real dominant cultural leaders in him and Bruce were shunted from the club. In a side full of soft good boys, Newnes and Bruce seemed to be the social leaders for the bigger group of players. I wonder if they copped the blame for setting low standards or something. Perhaps they bristled against the way they were assessed in Satan's review and were less willing to accept criticism. Someone said that Satan didn't get on with Bruce. Perhaps it's something like that.

Anyway I hope they have it right this time, I'm sick of being shit.
Didn’t I read Bruce is a different cat liked to party etc?

I really think we need Mitch Brown to help out Ming.

I think Bruce was a leader amongst a group of lads but no idea where exactly he was leading them in terms of professional sport.

Roo on the other hand....

Is it just me, or does Newnes look like the most saddest bloke going round?

Bruce had a kid recently so seemed to step out of the social stuff at that point a bit. I'm not sure he was the biggest party boy of the lot. None are anything like our 2009 era side.

Brown would be a good place holder forward option, he's a better back up than Rowe. In some Bombers games this year he was excellent.

There was definitely a difference in intensity between the two. Rooey was more the harsh critic, almost arrogant, high expectation type. Bruce much more "one of the lads" type who had the group laughing and relaxed and chose where to go hang out etc.

Yes, the Bruce synopsis does align with the performance we saw post Roo.

McKenzie puts his body on the line , I've seen him run blind back into packs a bit more than a few guys on the list , as well the guy blew everyone away last year due to the vast improved performance in his preseason where he become our top time trial runner.
Being 23 and having already played 49 games the guy could well come out of his shell next season or flounder around at Sandringham - but at this stage of his career he is still developing and could surprise us all.
Yeah? And? Why is any of that more important than just having a player capable of not looking like a headless chicken at any one point in time who can use the ball half decent?

Why does any of it matter? He's contracted and he ain't going nowhere.
Philips will be lucky go past 2020, Gears might be shuffled to vfl or retired.

Could Mac be developed into an outside tager?
Could better coaching get more out of him?

We'll have the opportunity to find out, coz he's gonna be with us a while longer.

Phillips is a funny one, early on he was full of promise and was getting huge numbers but has dropped away. He's an outside runner but a bit low impact overall. I still have hope for him.

Watched him once at training and he struck me as a real worker, Gresh looked like he was hanging out at the mall, sucks really that you work that hard but someone else that just cruises has all the talent

Yeah, he's a guy who looks all in at training. His VFL season was pretty ordinary though. I think he's either injured or not as committed any more as others pass him.

I think this applies more to Bruce than Newnes. Probably not a real coincidence that most of Bruce's clique over the past few years are all now at other clubs, and I don't think we are sad to no longer have his influence over someone like Gresham. While Newnes was part of Bruce's group, his main social group was Billings, Geary, Ross who are our three with the highest standards and the most dedicated players at the club.

But both of them being dropped from the leadership group then out of the club within a few years is very telling.

Newnes and Bruce were not taking us to finals glory. Same as Acres and Steven. Change was required and it got implemented. We will see a vastly different side, style of play and club in 2020.

I recall in his first few games that he actually looked pretty good.
He looked to fall into the Richo rut and lost confidence in his disposal, and things went downhill from there.
Regardless, it will work itself out in the wash now that KPIs are hopefully aligned with a winning formula.
We've done a fairly hard pruning the last couple of years and we're in a position where Dmac and Ed are the only two that raise a question mark.
Granted Austin and Clav could be in the same boat but injuries cut them a bit of slack.
Still, we're looking much better as a whole. The guys on the fringes are now either short term gap fillers or kids with real potential. There's few genuine list cloggers now.

It's been mentioned several times (maybe even by you?;)) that the intensity at training was lacking though very upbeat, morale was high and people were happy, it seems that the most laddish and relaxed of the players have been quietly moved on, Bruce, Stuv, Acres and White, I have no idea if Newnes was part of that.

Young still had a year to run and got delisted. Maybe the same thing will happen in a years time.

And you can bet your house I'm gonna complain about Dmac until such a time :kissingheart:

Apart from the substance abuse
The Brawling
The being escorted from places
The being photographed whilst doing substance abuse.
THe not turning up to training
The criminal driving
THe associating with criminals.

Name the ONE THING he did wrong.
Jeeze , can't let a kid make a mistake.
:p
Yeah isnt that just normal these days

The intensity at training is definitely someone we need to work on. We have players with that high work ethic who push themselves - Billings, Ross, Sinclair, Steele, Membrey as examples - but none of them are particularly vocal people.

Newnes was always someone who was a good trainer - not one who stood out for being overly intense about things but never looked to be slacking off like you could see in others. Sort of describes him as a footballer where he just blended into everything.

Thee biggest difference is when Hannebery is out on the park, he was so intense with everything he was doing and you could hear his voice throughout the whole of training encouraging and pushing everyone out there a long with him. Even when he was running laps and doing handball drills on the side, he has an intensity about him that was almost infectious to everyone else around him.

My hope for him lies in that he might be able to go through the guts more, where his disposal isn't quite so relied upon but his ability to get to contests will be important.
