My hope for him lies in that he might be able to go through the guts more, where his disposal isn't quite so relied upon but his ability to get to contests will be important.

Agree he has a big body - teach him start using it and with his aerobic fitness that would be a bonus if he could play inside. I hated how they 'pidgeon holed' so many players under Richardson, hopefully Ratten is more of a lateral thinker.

Pigeon holed is spot on. Elite runner and his brother plays outside so must be a wing.
Think he played a little in the guts towards the end of the year at Zebs so maybe a full season in there may change where he stands on the list as if he cant make that change I dont reckon he will last.

Last bit of Billings news.

Wow, what a guy. I’m the type that likes to leave these guys alone so we kept distance from him just had a quick wave and said hi.

He just got up from his sun bed because he’ll be heading to the airport soon, walks over to my dad and I with a bag full of saints gear. I’m currently wearing his training top with Billings 15 on the back.

My wife is in awe and she’s an Eagles supporter.

I’ll take a picture of the gear after.

Been one of McKenzie's biggest critics and still stand by it. He will not make it in the backline due to his disposal levels and 1v1 defending. I was hoping we would try him on the wing or even give him a run in the guts over the last 2 or so years since we have been terrible but the lack of positional changes have hurt us.

I'd give him a run on ball or do a tagging role in the VFL to see if he can rack up 30+ week in week out and see if we can use him to do Steele role while we release Steele to win his own footy a bit more.

Has the perfect traits for the modern game with speed/toughness/endurance and hopefully we can use that in an in and under role.

Paton and Coffield have well and truly gone past him in the backline, and they are even fringe 22 as it stands.

Nice.

Good thing you didn't follow Keg on legs
advice then. Might have been wearing his Boxing gloves....

He's actually not bad 1:1 his issue is he goes to ground and that's where quick opponents kill him.

The only way I see him making it is if he can improve his skills, no matter where we play him.

I disagree 1v1. Watch our round 1 game vs Gold Coast and Andrew Swallow on one leg kicked 3 or so on him when resting forward. Just doesn't have the smarts to be a really good defender.

The intensity at training is definitely someone we need to work on. We have players with that high work ethic who push themselves - Billings, Ross, Sinclair, Steele, Membrey as examples - but none of them are particularly vocal people.

Newnes was always someone who was a good trainer - not one who stood out for being overly intense about things but never looked to be slacking off like you could see in others. Sort of describes him as a footballer where he just blended into everything.

Thee biggest difference is when Hannebery is out on the park, he was so intense with everything he was doing and you could hear his voice throughout the whole of training encouraging and pushing everyone out there a long with him. Even when he was running laps and doing handball drills on the side, he has an intensity about him that was almost infectious to everyone else around him.

That's something I noticed since our older stars retired. No-one says much at training. They seem to be a much quieter group than other clubs. I have seen some training sessions of Collingwood, Dees and Richmond and all three are much more vocal.
Geary is an elite trainer you left off. He is a standard setter.

I haven't seen a training session since Hanners got there though so hopefully that changes. I wonder if there wasn't a culture of speaking up because no-one stood out, so no one thought they had the right to speak up. Bruce was pretty good at the vocalising too actually.

That is awesome to see, particularly because he is literally on the other side of the country no doubt trying to get away from footy for a precious few weeks. Good on him and lucky you.

Talking about players cut without trying them in different spots, I just saw Hugh Goddard running, he looks to have slimed down quite a lot since his last year with us. Is he still on the Blues list?

What I like is that even on his holiday he’s obviously been putting the work in if he’s taken all that gear with him. 👊🏼

Is it just me, or does Newnes look like the most saddest bloke going round?

Newnes: "Be strong in the contest he said, everything will be fine he said"View attachment 773727View attachment 773728
Yeah and his goodbye video was hesitant and a little wistful, as if in the back of his mind he was considering adding "You know Saints fans, I was just following the directions of the useless coach who you just sacked, he ruined me, I was going great guns a few years ago and you lot wanted me as Captain, now you're lowballing me, and so I have to leave, thanks a bloody lot"

I think all 4 departures have been slightly reluctant actually, I'm happy to see all go even though because we really needed to churn the list and if no one wants to leave, then we needed to give a little push. I think it's a good and a bad thing they were so reluctant.

Good: there's a positive close-knit vibe at Moorabbin.
Bad: They had got too comfy.

Pidgeon holed ,,, maybe they are are just no good , Richo is to blame for everything that went wrong at our club , lets see how good Ed and the other Muppets are under Ratts , Oh but then it will be Ratts fault that Ed and his merry men are no good.
Ed has never shown me anything to suggest he can win his own ball and Dmac will be just fine for winning time trials )))) Thats only just my opinion .
PS , not have a crack at you in particular i just think we need to set these guys free , they are not going to take us anywhere

Just watched the first half of this years Round 1 game against the Suns. We might miss Bruce, Newnes and Steven more than we think.

I think we should definitely look at picking up Brown as "fall back" replacement for Bruce for 12 months.

Good thing we have Hill, Howard, Jones, Butler, Ryder, Carlisle and Roberton to cover for them.
Apparently King and Battle goes alright as well.

Yeah? And? Why is any of that more important than just having a player capable of not looking like a headless chicken at any one point in time who can use the ball half decent?
I must say, it took quite while for people to like McKenzie. I didn't say much but he still doesn't grab me. As the saying goes.

Excuse me? He's ****ing atrocious 1-on-1. How many times did he give up a free goal against Charlie Cameron? What about Betts when we played Adelaide? Any half decent small forward absolutely kills him because he has no sense of balance and falls over if the wind blows the wrong way. Even the one legged David Swallow made him look like an auskicker standing completely stationary in the square.

You are right but when blokes like Phillips are under performing on a wing and we are screaming for runners, why not throw him up another challenge. Things got that fvckin stale under Richo its a wonder we didnt have more players wanting out. Ed is still very young but he has to stand up this year or he will be most likely cut...

Yep more than likely for the mids and defenders - though I think we might struggle replace Bruce the most though. Hence my thoughts on picking up Brown
