Crows need a quality ruck as O’Brien ruck work not afl standard. He looked like a b grade ruckman against a a grade ruckman today.

This really comes back to discussion around the importance of a tap ruckman in the modern game. Put an a grade midfield around him and break even in hitouts (at least to the point where opponents can't tap to advantage regularly) and he's a great fit. Low cost, grunt worker at ground level (see tackle numbers every week), clunk a few around the ground - and with tank to do it all day.
His ruckwork will improve.

How right you were. Rankine made a big impression today.
I said after the under 18 championships in 2018 that we had to do whatever it takes to get Rankine.

I really, really like Rozee and Luko but I love Rankine. He has given the other two a season and a half start but I still back him to be the cream of the crop.

ROB was fine. NicNat smashes every ruck. He slaughtered McInerney but Lions still won clearances and the match.

Our midfield stinks that’s the problem. Thilthorpe will be good back up.
But ROB has been woeful in the ruck all year.
Rd1- 22 hit outs Vs Naismith 28 hit outs
Rd 2- 27 hit outs vs Lycett 32 hit outs
Rd 3- 37 hit outs & 0 clearances vs Witts 22 hit outs & 8 clearances
Rd 4- 21 hit outs vs McInerney 19 hit outs
Rd 5- 17 hit outs & 2 clearances vs Darcy 24 hit outs & 1 clearance
Rd 6- 12 hit outs vs Nic Nat 24 hit outs & 5 clearances

Midfield stinks because they are trying to read off the opposition. ROB hit outs rarely go to advantage. Therefore they are always behind.

First stage of a rebuild is getting your pillers right. I don’t think is the answer ATM. His poor ruck work is slowly being noticed through the media. I would attempt to get Ladhams from Port as I believe Thilthorpe will end up as a ruckman that can go forward. Reminds me of Grundy.

Problem his hit outs are more to disadvantage than advantage atm. His use of body while contesting the ruck is awful.

I tend to look back at keating from brisbane. He was a very handy ruck but what made him good was that from the first bounce he came out with socks down and mouthguard hanging out but he was as aggressive as hell and would put his fist through the ball and belt in 30m forward. Whoever is coaching obrien needs to get him aggressive at bounces and stoppages and to vary it up by wacking some forward. That way it is hard for the opposition to consistently set up. Around the ground obrien is great..just needs a real mongrel streak..get him watching keating go about it

Agree... I mentioned that a while back suggesting O’Brien should punch it forward at times. This could include taking the ball out of the ruck as well.

The major problem with ROB is that his kicking is awful. He needs to improve that quick give handball. I feel ROB will be fine around a better midfield until we are starting to break into the 8 and contend. At that point we will need to trade an athletic ruck who can kick better and hit the scoreboard.

I wouldn't judge some players too harshly in this covid year. If it has been a pattern over 2 or 3 years with senior players then that's different.

How was he in the ruck though? You know that position he plays, as a RUCK man? His ruck work is miles off and puts us on the back foot constantly at stoppages and centre bounces, whilst he isn’t our biggest problem at the moment, we should be looking at upgrading the position if we can through a trade or at the draft.

Eh the ruck part is overrated. Would rather someone who is average in that component and excellent around the ground than the opposite. Whether ROB gets to elite or not, an upgrade there is a rather unnessecary waste of draft collateral at the moment.

I'm not heaping any of the blame on our clearances on ROB, he's tapping to a midfield that don't have the desire to work hard.

Seeing our lack of genuine tall forward talent if we go with the below as a late pick costing nothing could pay dividends

1: Bid on Ugle-Hagan- WBD match
2: Thrilthorpe
3: Crouch compo = Hollands
13: > GWS for Hately
20: take the punt on Baldwin
40: Edwards
46: Newchurch
69: Borlase
74: Throw a lifeline to Paddy McCartin - apparently has got concussions under control and raring to go, won’t cost us anything draft wise and could pay off bigtime

Trade a future 2nd to FRE for Valente

Our haul:
Thrilthorpe
Hollands
Hately (trade)
Baldwin
Edwards
Newchurch
Borlase
McCartin
Valente (trade)

Definite No to McCartin. Club likely will have enough players suing it. His career is likely over and we shouldn't be party to someone who isn't taking the doctors advice.

If he gets signed off and cleared and it costs us nothing then why not? We’ve always been conservative and where has that gotten us? Let’s show some balls and take a punt

I think we can put to bed any notion of pick 2 compo for Crouch.

He's nowhere near worth that.

It would be end of first round so after all the academy picks something in the 20s.

So can anyone shed light on what sort of player borlase is? With him fog and thilthorp is that too much?

Is edwards playing atm?

I don't think tall forwards are as much of a problem. We've got two pieces who have had a promising start to their career in Fogarty and McAsey. Could probably go for Thillhorpe as a third but we may have already invested a lot of collateral there.

This year the question is midfield and small forwards.
