Honestly, this might not be the worst thing TBH.

Give the Vic kids in particular who missed out a summer to have a pre-season and see who looks likely and snag the best one as a supplementary signing ahead of the season.

+1. also see how injuries go

Strange move not to at least grab a midfielder or ruckman with a rookie spot.

I'd almost garauntee there will be a few bargains taken in the rookie draft.

Apparently we can invite players to train with us and take them later?
Pretty sure we can, like with what Richmond did with Sydney Stack a few years ago.

How does this work?
"The AFL also confirmed the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) will return from January 6 and run until March 9 on the eve of the 2021 season.

Much like the Mid-Season Draft, clubs must have a list spot open following the Rookie Draft or have moved a player to the inactive list in order to add a player in the window.

For example, Adelaide will be forced to re-draft retired defender Bryce Gibbs due to administration purposes around his payout for 2021. The Crows will be allowed to immediately move Gibbs to the inactive list and add a player via the SSP.

Clubs will have the opportunity to add potential SSP signings to their training squad in the new year – a process used most notably by Richmond's Sydney Stack to win a list spot at Punt Road ahead of 2019."

we currently have 36 seniors, but that can be increased to 38 if need be and still have one spot open on the rookie list

But then what would a DFA have to do with passing on the rookies? I think we could have taken any DFA we wanted and still taken our first pick in the rookie draft. I think they have just surmised that none of the players were a better prospect than having a couple of openings on the list for the supplementary and mid-season signings.

How does this work?

If you have a spot on your rookie list you can sign any unlisted players between January and late March.

We have 36 senior listed players and 3 Rookie players, meaning that we bring in 3 more players between the Supplementary Selection Period (described above), the mid-season rookie draft next year or via a Delisted Free Agent prior to the final list lodgement.

All the hullabaloo about Max Heath and he doesn't even get a rookie spot.

I'm gonna do my best to stay away from the draft forum next year. Just torturing ourselves really..
