Who have we stuffed up apart from McCartin?

Well I would look at our 3 selections since 2010 and argue we got one (unproven but likely) that has lived up to expectations. It could look similar across all teams for all I know. Fact is, making a call that a club has "done well" at the draft table the day after the draft is rubbish. Going number 1 does not mean you have got the number 1 player....and so on for 2, 3, 4 , 5 etc etc. You can't call a draft winner until years down the track.

5 years time we will all wonder how/why the Suns were able to walk away with Hollands.

So in your eyes Billings is a bust? I am just trying to understand this statement

Well you know we have stuffed up enough top 5 picks to understand they are no guarantees.

I would say McCartin is the only one "stuffed up" from the list I gave. I would add Luke Ball but he was an OP victim, was genuinely quick before hand and did win a premiership. X Clarke maybe.
Only genuine "stuff up" was McCartin over Petracca.

Anyway I am being pedantic, your are correct in the post above how can a club be a winner when none of the kids have pulled on a boot.

My argument is actually backed up by yours. Ball was a winner in the draft, years later Hodge or Judd was the better offer. Even McCartin, his injuries wrecked his career, even though I though that was a genuine mistake.

Anyway now worries. Good chat.

It's looking a lot better in part because Steele has taken a massive step forward and you could argue is in the Top 10 AFL mids. I hope Crouch's form line is his best and fairest year. I think it probably is if he can stay injury free and in that case it is a very good 1/2. I still feel after that it drops away a bit too sharply.

Who is our third line? Gresham/Jones? Of the clubs you picked out at Pies it would be Treloar/De Goey at Dees it would be Viney/Brayshaw at Tigers - well take you pick but the fact that Prestia is not in their top two says something.

I think our mids has improved from major weakness to top 8 competitive. Would still love to see an upgrade on Gresham or Jones in our best 3. For me it is the potential weak link in a push for a flag from this group and I hope the club has a solid path to a big recruit in 2021.
It's reasonable to say Jones should probably occupy that 3rd best rank at the moment, but I expect Hunter and Bytel to come on and give us a legendary midfield pack that will destroy most other teams. 2 years away.

No, I don't think he is a bust. Below expectations maybe. The context of my post - it was response to someone who posted about someone in the media saying Doggies won the draft because they got the best player. On the journalists logic, Saints would have been 3rd in the 2013 draft because we got Billings. If you review the 2013 draft today, Billings is not the 3rd best player that year, he is probably closer to 6th or 7th.

My point is, you can't "win" the draft simply by having the higher picks.

I actually don't think Ball was a stuff up. Before he got OP he was going to be anything and his 04 and 05 had him at that time easily 2nd best player from that draft. Hodge really only came on from 06/07.

Yeah Fox do "winners and losers of the draft" and give the prize ( there is no prize ) to the team who went into the draft with the most picks, because we all know that they will be great , just like their pre-draft write up suggests.

I’m with ya the only real stuff up is McCartin - however, I love my Jacky Billing’s but I’d do crazy things to have Bontempelli in the RWB. Just crazy to think what this team would look like with a Bont in it.

Massive melt...

I forgot to add that "I won't renew my membership next year..."

Is that how it's done?

You seemed to melt about people melting that weren't melting yet in anticipation.

Even Dodo won’t say in detail...the little comment though was interesting.
He said .

Many picked didn’t play any competitive football for over a year so we are basing it certainly
on very few games .

Well it is subjective.

Joff is right.

its so incredibly hard to **** up the 1st pick in the draft. it's why it's so highly rated by all clubs and has only been traded once in the modern game. even when it was traded the trade was an absolute disaster for the club that traded it.

the worst case scenario from the 1st pick is you will get a GOP who will contribute or you get some trade currency coming back.

Or the ultimate worst case scenario, your No.1 plays 33 games and is an injury bust.

I think i actually prefer the closure we got from Paddy ( though its a tragedy for what its done to his life ) than the ongoing saga of a Jack Watts, showing a bit , spudding it up again, appearing to be useful, but not quite, year after year. Honestly Watts was like an even crappier version of Blake Acres.

I always get annoyed when reading we "Stuffed up" picking Paddy, his 2016 looked promising kicking goals some nice contested marks you could see the potential there. You can't foresee injury and when it happens its just bad luck, he was the right choice at the time; brought a lot of character and drive to the club and even during his time in rehab he did everything possible to get him self right showing a dedication which at times would of been hard and an always positive outlook. If Paddy had played 200 games and didn't contribute much and Petracca help Melbourne win a flag then sure we could say we "Stuffed up'" but I see him more as a victim of circumstance.

It would be good to know how many teams have left list spots open for the mid-year rookie draft.
But its hard enough to figure out our own team.
From here somewhere; the vast majority of the teams have one spot available, one or two have two spots, we have three. The only one to have more than two.
