This is Part 1

The thread is continued in part 2:

If Hogan was a raging success I doubt if any of the accolade would find its way beyond the incumbent.

Bell oversaw the S&C since his appointment and likely as a Board member also had input to most things football. But it is in his time that the S&C were reviewed and nothing changed (and the option to change the coach taken making other changes financially unviable). This year change has come to that department but it is a little late and reeks of being a reactionary rather than proactive move.

In trade negotiation he would have been under Rosich, and I have no doubt Lyon would have input, but it is his department. Feathers in caps are great, and I am a Bell supporter, but his performance isn't A grade. Could do better, and begins with taking responsibility for actions.
To sack RTB and Webber in the same hit and pay two contracts to people aren’t at the club is a big ask...

Really curious on the radio silence around Mihocek too.... Wasn’t he meant to be re-signing last week?
Waiting on a domino to fall elsewhere maybe?

Yeah also still mildly interested in this one. Given the way the Treloar situation has unfolded it'd be reasonable to suggest that the Pies are trying to free up cap space and then resign the out of contracts in order of priority?

Ross would have been out of contract now and we didn't achieve anything by sacking him a year early. Money clearly wasn't their highest priority.
Serong would have not a game this year if Ross had still been here and Cerra would have been stagnating at half forward or half back

I heard on the news that Langdon from GWS wants to return to WA but has nominated WCE as his club of choice.

I reckon he would have way more scope for game-time and be a better fit with your mob because the Eagles are very well stocked for small forwards.

Has the Dockers management shown any interest in him ??
Just Cripps. No room for Langdon. Allows Fyfe to go forward.

Thankfully not so far. He’s shite.

What a load of garbage. Playing first-round draft picks that didn't deserve a spot in the 22 ultimately cost him his job.

I think it says a lot about your mindset that you think that it was worth paying for two senior coaches all year for something that has no basis in reality.

Ok then Mr Freo Shark, what has he achieved again?

I can only speak for myself but it's the first time in at least three years that I actually enjoyed watching us play.

By that metric alone JLo this year was a huge success.

Did you see some of the spuds West Coast played in that position in an elimination final only a few weeks ago?

Them chasing a small forward makes plenty of sense.

West Coast have Ryan and Cripps who’re very good but Langdon is an upgrade on Ah Chee, Petruccelle etc. Freo needs top end talent in that role but Langdon isn’t an upgrade on Schultz or Switkowski so adding him is kind of pointless.

Well that just underlines the power of perception and how our biases impact judgements.
In actual measureable metrics we actually got more defensive this year.

So what you're telling me is there's subjectivity at play here? :)

I didn't say anything about defensive or otherwise though.

I simply enjoyed what we served up a hell of a lot more.

Is that metric points against per game?

It's not really of any utility to compare points against this year to points against last year without taking into account the effect of shortened quarters.

Although a subjective measure the improvement in our ball movement was exciting.

That's just one metric though. I could show a bunch of metrics (eg kicking efficiency) that have improved leaps and bounds but there was clearly good and bad.

I can't speak for others but my enjoyment this season has come from having 3 of our young mids make 22 under 22, another winning the Rising Star, another getting a maiden AA jumper, Tabs finally showing his potential, and seeing glimpses of talent from our other young players like Sturt, Young, Frederick and Henry. Less reliance on Fyfe and Walters (and BHill/Langdon from last year) meant we took a competitive hit but will serve us better in the long run imo.

In terms of game plan I think I see where they are going (like I've seen with other successful clubs who transitioned to a new game plan), so I have hope we'll see vast improvement next year. But in terms of this year it was no more exciting to watch up against years previous. But in my opinion (subjectively) I think there is far greater future upside (by the whole list) whereas in past years it was more hope we could compete on the shoulders of Fyfe/Walters/etc.

I think you need to move on, Ross is gone!

Do you know what the word anecdotal means? I mean ok cool so you think we looked more attractive but we didn't improve so...

I mean I gotta be honest, the club is saying we are still full of youth, finals / grand finals are years away so what was the advantage in paying 2 senior coaches? Nothing. I mean ok, the club didn't know covid was going to hit but its like, why did they think it was so urgent to get rid of him? We were paying him a mint from everything you hear in the media. In hindsight, it's been a huge stuff up and a year later they sacked the fitness guy anyway? If it was because the media frenzy was too hot to handle, then it didn't work.

If we don't make finals next year who do they sack? There's nobody left.

This thread is about drafts, trades and free agency coming up. If you want to talk about RTB maybe start another thread "Bring Ross back"

How dare you enjoy watching your team play footy. The cheek.

He has a point imo.

If it wasn’t for a certain thug, Brayshaw and Cerra would’ve missed one game between them in their first season.

Say what you like about Ross Lyon, and I reckon we’re better off without him, but saying Serong wouldn’t have played a game this year if he was still coach is absolute garbage.

For the first time in 3 years the players actually look like they are enjoying playing too.
