This is Part 1

The thread is continued in part 2:

Every single year people enormously overrate the points system. Unless you have an academy player in the draft, points are useless, so talks of "it values Hogan at #x" is literally irrelevant.

On SM-G781B using BigFooty.com mobile app

Only reason I spoke of points was to get our nga boys. We need picks for points. Gws do not seem to

While we are discussing bugbears however. I hate the term bidding war in relation to what a team can get. The only bidding war is player to potential teams. Hogan’s manager will be looking at the best possible deal from all interested parties and then selecting them as the team for hogan. Gws and Sydney won’t be negotiating with the dockers

Yeah also still mildly interested in this one. Given the way the Treloar situation has unfolded it'd be reasonable to suggest that the Pies are trying to free up cap space and then resign the out of contracts in order of priority?
Me Too
Wish they'd put it to bed TBH so I can let it go , he is the best ( most affordable) plug and play forward out there ATM as far as I can see .
Would be ideal sub for Hogan if he goes .
I have this nagging feeling this is the work in progress quietly playing out behind the scenes .
Reality is that theses signings do seem to take longer than we think and MCheck will probs just stay at the Pies .
Why would they let him go ? ( unless they do land Brown and keep Biggest Cox ) in which case they probs don't need another tall and can clear up some cash .
Gawd this is harrowing 😫

Ok then Mr Freo Shark, what has he achieved again?

Goes beyond purely win/loss. You can see theres a plan developing. Better, more attractive game plan. Defence improved greatly despite key injuries.
The fact he was discussed as the coach of the year shows hes got alot more pluses than negatives this year.

If you read the wording of Bell's statement at the time, it was pretty carefully worded to leave the door open and not close off negotiations in any permanent sense at all. The statement is perfectly consistent with it just being brinkmanship in a negotiation strategy.
Correct. His carefully worded prepared club statement. As if he went completely rogue, prepared the statement and addressed the media without informing ANYONE else at the club. It’s easier to give Bell a free pass as he’s still here but there is no way he should get one.

It’s like the stock market.

A company share price goes up and down but the their is a true value according to profit, assets and debt levels.

Sell when the market is low, then you lose value.

Trade Hogan now we get very little.

His true value is a lot higher.

I would hold my chips.
Except that people are not stocks.

If your stock was infected/poisoned/expired you'd get rid of it to prevent that spreading to your other good stock.

The best thing for us is if Geelong land Cameron and Higgins and re-sign Henderson and Taylor. A bonus if they secure another midfielder or defender which squeezes their cap, prying Clark out due to him seeing a lack of opportunity.

I was responding a question with a metaphor.

I get your point.

Is Hogan just a naughty boy or he is a cancer?

Unable to listen to trade radio at work. Did anything happen yet?

Tomorrow it will go off, (Free Agency), and then be dull again until middle of next week.
Haven't missed much

Left field but could we go after Jarrod Brander?

could play forward to replace hogan

He managed to play an extra game than Hogan this season and since he hasn't kicked any goals at all in his career yet I have to use points, 33 points less than Hogan did this year.

If we want a big bodied midfielder who can't kick, Banfield is right there.

I doubt it, we don’t tend to trade with them. He could be a good player though. Seems mobile for a tall and would surely be looking for opportunities in either defence or attack as a KPP so it’s a good thought.

Seriously cannot give enough likes for this post.
Well played 👏🏻👏🏻

Listening to the Duff and Quarters pod and I’m still at a loss on how were on the edge of our salary cap. What are we
paying Brayshaw and Cerra? 800k already?

Stef Giro must be on a cool mill a year because it does not add up. Think commentators are getting mixed up with structuring contracts to free up cap space in the future with being short on cap. There is no way we can't restructure a couple of contracts to free up space if we needed to. All points to us looking at recruiting big the next couple of years.

Possibly.

If we were in trouble cap wise I'd be doing this:
Extending Griffin Logue beyond his current 2 season contract, push money from 2021 into 2023 and bump up the yearly average.
Extending Sean Darcy beyond his current 2 season contract, pushing money from 2021 into 2023 and bump up the yearly average.
Sign Matt Taberner to a four year extension to finish his career with us, move his 2021 money to 2022/2023 and 2024 (payrise)
Sign Adam Cerra to a four year extension (taking him to restricted free agency with a chunk of his 2021 money in the final year $1,000,000)
Sign Andrew Brayshaw to a four year extension (taking him to restricted free agency with 2021 money spread out and into the final year)

You could also do the same with Fyfe and Walters as well. Extend and spread.
There’s mechanisms in place to manage the cap. IF we need to.
