This is Part 1

The thread is continued in part 2:

God I hate the week before trade week (and the first few days). For some reason I refresh the AFL app or this thread expecting something substantial.

I would take Matt Rendell's opinion today with a grain of salt. It's his first media gig - and he seems desperate to keep it. He's spouting so much speculative BS - it's unbelievable. He clearly doesn't think before he talks (aka his racist views on indigenous draftees while a recruiter).

Agree on rendell - terrible media performer and says some of the dumbest shit

Barrett continually having to coach him in to adding some sort of value

SOS is ok, but Terry is a big loss

They actually had a pretty interesting discussion today about character vs talent in drafting decisions. Rendell said he weighted character about 75%, which got me thinking about those "white parent" comments and just what character might have been shorthand for for him.

Again, this makes sense if you think that the club suddenly got an interest in Hogan immediately prior to Bell getting the job, but makes far less sense if you think that the quest to get Hogan existed before that and that a Board member like Bell may have had input. He isn’t a work experience student who landed a top job.
Yes, good point. We had been interested in Hogan for several years, so all those in senior positions would have been across the issue. But why did we retract our offer during trade week? It seemed like some at least got cold feet

My impression was always that after the medicals and meetings with Hogan that Bell really did want to walk away but was told to go back and get a deal done. Don't think that was by Ross either there seemed to be some truth to his claims of being hands off come trade time (at least compared to other coaches, I am sure he had his say).

* Just my 2c reading between the lines and never having met any of the people involved.

If you read the wording of Bell's statement at the time, it was pretty carefully worded to leave the door open and not close off negotiations in any permanent sense at all. The statement is perfectly consistent with it just being brinkmanship in a negotiation strategy.

Classic hackdorn

Freo have had the ‘chat’ and both parties have agreed to look elsewhere

Apparently we will be happy to pay his base salary (300k) and the club he goes to will pay the bonus incentives (goals / games)

Also said Walters looking elsewhere because we won’t give him 3 years, only 2

Sonny is contracted until the end of 2022, so I would have thought a bit too early to be talking about contract extensions, mid next year would be more suitable timing.

If Fremantle FC is cutting $500,000 off it's salary cap book for 2021 then right now is the perfect time to talk about an extension.

Let's assume Walters is on;
$550,000 for 2021
$550,000 for 2022
Uncontracted - 2023

If you're his manager and you can sign up that extra year you could have:
$700,000 for 2021
$700,000 for 2022
$200,000 for 2023

Or:
$1,050,000 for 2021
$275,000 for 2022
$275,000 for 2023

That's what Colin Young is looking to do, and it's the right thing for him to do. Michael Walters has one more contract to sign for his entire career, if he signs it now and makes $500,000 extra because of it then he has done great service for his client.

If Michael Waters is almost thirty two and out of contract, seeking to extend his career and get the last drops out of AFL for his family, he is signing a $250,000 contract for one year.

The best outcome for Walters might be to work over east for four years and make $3,500,000 in that time.

Either way, one more signature and it has to count.

Cripps isn't with Colin Young, he isn't going to get a slice of that cash. An extra $500,000 on his books is better for Colin.

He has a point imo.

If it wasn’t for a certain thug, Brayshaw and Cerra would’ve missed one game between them in their first season.

Say what you like about Ross Lyon, and I reckon we’re better off without him, but saying Serong wouldn’t have played a game this year if he was still coach is absolute garbage.
Serong would not have a played a game this season

that’s a load of crap, Brayshaw and Cerra played every game they were fit in their first two seasons (with the exception of r1 2018 for Cerra). Serong probably would have played more forward than mid this season if RTB was coach (especially seeing he was billed as someone who’d likely start fwd in their first few seasons), but he most definitely would have played

This is what I think we would be prepared to trade Hogan for:
- An upgrade into the first 4 or 5 picks
- A 2021 first (worth more than normal this year)
- A deal with a cumulative value in pick 6 to 10 range.

Any club offering significantly less than that, like the 'we'd be lucky to get a mid second rounder' people in here, are also not likely to offering a deal to Hogan himself that would be better than staying on his current dollars a for another year and either gaining an extension or fielding better outside offers on the back of improved form next year. Why would he move on a short contract somewhere else and be one foot injury / piece bad publicity away from finished for a pittance when he do the same here on decent coin?
If he goes I think the media, and some people on here, will be surprised how much we get for him*.

*(Obviously it's still going to be a significant discount on the pick 3 equivalent we paid for him).

Whether Hogan moves or not he will still get at least the same money for next year, it’s just a case of whether we are paying for some of it or not.

Carlton trying to offload Paddy Dow.

I’m surprised by that, I thought he showed enough in his first year to show he could be very good player once given the right opportunity

I heard on the news that Langdon from GWS wants to return to WA but has nominated WCE as his club of choice.

I reckon he would have way more scope for game-time and be a better fit with your mob because the Eagles are very well stocked for small forwards.

Has the Dockers management shown any interest in him ??

Not sure if they have, but we haven’t

Thank you for talking some sense.

I see no reason why we as fans should hate Ross. As a supporter base we should be better than making up rubbish about an ex coach of the club, especially the most successful one we’ve had.

Saying Serong wouldn’t have played a game is genuine rubbish.

If anything Lyon had form selecting top 15 picks very early into the season. Outside of Weller, I can’t think of a player he probably should’ve given more games to in their first year.

Just realised... this is the first trade period in three years that we actually have a half decent list manager.
Last year was Micallef, who Bell had to stand in for, and the year before was Rosich, who Bell had to be the mouthpiece for..

Kind of interesting to see how things play out

for sure, you could make the case that Serong wouldn’t have made the impact that he had this year if Ross was still here (definitely think he’d have spent more time forward which isn’t necessarily a bad thing seeing he was billed as being able to play there pre-draft), but it’s just nonsense that he wouldn’t play a game

If you were gws would you be happy with 10 and hogan for Cameron? They could back themselves in to turn him back into a premier full forward. This is better than the pick 9 they would get in free agency.

gws trade Cameron for 11 and 13. on trade those selections to us for hogan and 10. That would value hogan at around 15. Probs a little too high.
gws might be more interested in our 28 than us. We might be able to swap this for 40 and 46.
gws will end up with hogan, 9(Williams compo),11, 20(hately), 28 + something for Caldwell.
freo 12,14,40,46
40 and 46 will cover a walker or wester bid at 20.

Walters is contracted for another two seasons already, if he wants another year on top of that and will get it elsewhere then it's a big deal. He will be nearly 32 when his current contract with us ends.

If a club like North have a million a year for him for three years and he is contracted for two seasons then we will get their first pick for him straight up.

If there is massive money for him on the table then he should look after his family and get it. If his manager thinks that $500,000 is going to open up next season and wants Walters to extend for a year with an immediate cash injection in 2021 of that previously Hogan cash then good play for him.

If he leaves for money then it's good for his family, but he will be a mercenary forever more and his reputation with Freo should reflect that.
Would Almost be like Ablett Jr to GC ( not quite that bad !)
Sonny had a pretty average year and seemed to be showing his age so would his value be that high anyway ?
Pillar for Freo as others have said in his leadership and indigenous mentor ship role .
