So just been told by someone who knows Jordan Clark that he asked to come home, but the cats said no deal.
He really should fire his manager. He had 2 choices:

1. Trade to Freo - get a healthy pay rise (both player and manager), play AFL, contracted, Cats comfortably ask for our Pick 12.
2. Stay at Geelong - less pay than at Freo, play reserves (no league for 2 years), stocks fall, uncontracted, Cats hold no cards to ask for a 1st Rounder.

Even if the story is true, you can interpret "Asked to come home" in a number of different ways. Was it a "Dear Geelong I really MUST go home because of <reasons>" or was it "Dear Geelong I would like to be considered to be traded home if the opportunity comes up"?

And more importantly, did he (Clark) really have the above two choices as a contracted player? Clark only had the choice to ask for a trade or to not - he asked the former and got the response that he would not be traded. Only Geelong had the actual power to make a choice with respect to where he was next season.

IMO we already have too many really short players on our list. With Matera gone and Western coming in we’re already matching last year with an overall list that has less players.

Sure Richmond had 10 players below 6 foot in their team on Grand Final day but AFL players of around 180cm (let’s say 178-182cm) aren’t short - it’s the lower end of normal for non-KPP AFL players.

You wouldn’t want to have any more than 2-3 genuinely small players in your side as they can only really play certain positions. With so many on the list we’re realistically limiting the usefulness of our depth by drafting more.
I've just gone through our list only seven players on our entire list are below 180 cm:

Walters 178,Serrong 178,Shultz 178,Crowden 176,Gyro 175,Colier 175,Switkowski 179

Can't tell if joke or extremely narrow minded.

Under 178cm is what I think recruiters really worry about - to this end:
  • Crowden;
  • Giro;
  • Colyer; and
  • * Matera (Was on the list)
Are the ones that considered very sub-level. This would be compared to Richmond's:
  • Baker;
  • Prestia; and
  • Bolton.
For mine the small difference (going forward) is that Crowden is a good kick, whereas Prestia is an excellent kick and Bolton is a good kick. Giro is just okay and Colyer is below average.

If we added Western to the list he is also more an okay kick but has super speed whilst Sam Durdin is very good at kicking for goals and also speedy enough.

Caleb Daniel and Sam Mitchell. Some pretty handy small guys of recent years.

Totally agree...I've got no problem drafting smaller players as long as they are good runners and good skill...And I think We could do with a few more...
If Western is anything like Shay Bolton I can not understand why some posters think maybe We shouldn't draft him...

For sure.

Their current game plan is very much about control, and in finals, especially against Richmond, that is more difficult.
The Hawks won three in a row with a similar game style.

I understand that the game wasn't a final and the end score looked bad but I felt we stopped Tigers running game for 3 quarters.

Where do you think Durdin will go in the draft?

Jordan Clark is getting paid a lot of money next season, then less the year after to finish his contract.

Agree, a balanced approach is always best in my opinion.

The Eagles sold the farm for Kelly thinking that, with his addition, they would be a shoe-in for the 2020 flag. Did not turn out that way. Now they have lost access to a year's draft talent. It may not mean much but it could also come back to bite them.

I don't think selling the farm is the answer. If you miss the hole is too big.

We did it with Carr and Headland and paid the price.

I think Kelly up the road will be the same. .

Makes me wary of the Cripps possibility next season. Like GWS and Cameron, Carlton will match. Time will also tell if the hole created at Geelong if they fail next season creates a list problem going forward.

Can someone cite for me where selling the farm has produced a premiership to date? For me selling the farm is three highish picks.

The minimum contract for a free agent is 2 years. We could offer a free agent a heavy front loaded two years, then arrange an extension halfway through his two year deal.

The matching of a deal requires the club to show they can fit the total value in the years, not the distribution. So a seven year 7 million dollar deal could be matched with six million in year 7.

By the end of next season there will be plenty of players signed up for the following two years but very few beyond that.

That's how a club would make it impossible to match a deal. Just two seasons to find space for $3.5m dollars.

Yes.

He gets paid a lot in 2021, more than he would average at Freo on a four year deal with us. That same offer is going to be there next season and he gets a year in at higher money.
Where are you getting this information that there's a spike in his contract for 2021? Not doubting you, I just can't find it anywhere. Have you got a link? It would explain quite a bit.

What Prestia are you watching? He is a terrible kick, no better than Colyer. But due to the way he (and Richmond) plays, it doesn't really matter. Just surge/hack the ball forward. What Prestia has over all these short people is he is an absolute nugget, built (and plays) like a brick shithouse.

Bolton can blaze away (which again suits the way Richmond want to surge forward), but he is the most skilled by a long way out of the group above. He is the one I hope Western can replicate. I don't believe Bolton's listed height though, I think he is a bit taller and close to 180cm.

hmmm.....is this relevant for us?

Looking into the tea leaves, we've realised that not having Fyfe in the guts full time hurts us in Finals games, however Taberner is too easily double-teamed without Fyfe up forward. Enter ????.

I expect Fyfe to play more midfield in crucial games next year which may give us the leg up we're looking for.
Nice but no one doubles Taberner :)

Last I heard he was at uni studying to become a teacher. So he’s basically back living what I assume would’ve been his normal life if he wasn’t drafted.

It’s a damn shame about his footy career. You won’t meet a nicer bloke.

As a good mate of mine, can confirm he's one of the nicest blokes you'll meet.

Teaching these days, and thankfully back to a reasonably normal life. Did well in the WAFL a few years back and was thinking of a comeback attempt but his body didn't hold up again and he had to give it away.
