Yep, especially the targeted approach bit.
Jurgen Klopp & Michael Edwards have taken this targeted approach at Liverpool FC in the last 4 years.

Not necessarily getting the best/most expensive players, but the absolute best players available to suit their system.

This has taken them to being arguably the best club team on the planet.
Now ... if we can just turn Teaguey into Jurgen Klopp

I've never been a fan of the 'He's a good player....therefore we should get him' thinking.

I'd sooner the lesser player that fits into what is required and we've achieved that for the club....even if Caldwell, Hately etc become good players or even the draft pick we may have taken had we held onto our pick #8, at all cost.

Again, it's clearly the approach we've taken on board, having acquired Martin, Saad & Williams.....and if things ha gone to plan, Papley would be here also.
Sure we would have missed on Kemp & Philp, but so what? He was the right player for us.

Just going to post this here. :)

We have to take two in the ND and it looks like we may not acquire any rookies this year.
Kennedy, Moore, Macreadie, Polson & Phillips on a knifes edge. So at least 2 have to fall from this group.
Owies is Cat B and can stay on another year, if we so wish.
Phillips is a rookie.

Slightly more than i wanted to pay for Saad, more just my distain for Essendon and the thought of giving them a 'win' at the trade table made me want to vomit... However at the end of the day we have brought in 2 guns in Williams & Saad and a good player in Fogarty... And they have lost 2 f there top 5 players in Saad and Daniher.

FB: Plowman, Weitering, Williams
HB: Docherty, Jones, Saad

Depth/ form: Newman, Marchbank

Centre: Setterfield, Cripps, Walsh
R: DeKoenig, Williamson, E Curnow

Depth/ form: Pittonet, Dow, Stocker, Kennedy, Kemp, Philip

HF: Martin, McGovern, Fisher
FF: Betts, McKay, C Curnow

Depth/ form: Casboult, Fogarty, LOB, Cuningham, Silvagni

Bench: Newnes, SPS, Gibbons, Murphy

I like it.

Murphy and Betts to retire end of next year, but we have a year to get Fogarty up to speed to slot in for Betts, and plenty of replacements for Murphy (Dow, Stocker, Kemp, Philip etc). We have depth in all positions on the ground.

The only thing missing is a genuine small forward, and that fabled balanced Mid who runs both ways (but we do have a few contenders for both positions that are young and developing).

I think you have Williams and Williamson backwards

Essendon 'win' at the trade table every year - hasn't got them a whole heap.

Of course tomorrow they either 'lose' on the Dunkley trade by coughing up 2 first round picks or they go into next year severely undermanned.

Interesting to see how everything plays out.

Ed instead of newnes i reckon

The net outcome to date, is that we've taken on Williams, Saad and Fogarty for effectively our pick #8.Adelaide
Every deal is independent of one another, but as a whole, the trade period have given us exactly what we were after.
There is no, 'Let's get a player and see wha we can do with them' It has been a targeted campaign.

Yes, we gave Williams one year too many and we paid more than we should have for Saad....but in the end....the only things that's going to matter, is for the rate of our improvement with this netting.

Once I 'get over' a couple of things, I can only look forward to next year...with or without CCurnow.
That's such a defeatist attitude. Take free agency out of the picture, and look at the net trade, which is 8 and a pick downgrade for Saad and Fogarty.

Would be approaching OK value is Saad were 23 and Fogarty was dealing with less injury issues, but that's not what's happening.

You've just disappeared Ed out of existence.

No, I haven't delisted Ed at all

Rather than picking one option, lay out your best 22

Pending expected development we are looking pretty set. If I could go for any (realistic) players in the comp this off season, Williams and Saad would've been nearly top of the list.

All that is required now is:
- a back up for Jones to take over in a couple of years
- an electrifying small forward to take over from Eddie
- back up in case of worst case scenario with Charlie
- (maybe an extra piece for ruck depth)

If I could add any two players in the comp to our list next year, I'd be aiming for Ben King and Liam Ryan. (Obviously not really expecting either of them to happen but they would be the two.)

I must say, I would've liked us to take Jake Riccardi last year instead of Ramsey - nothing against Ramsey but Riccardi would've been perfect back up for Charlie.

Did you even understand what I put forward? :) .... and of course we paid a little more than we should have for Saad
Again, every situation should be discussed in isolation but the net outcome is what ultimately matters.
Have we improved our squad or gone backwards?

At this stage we've effectively replaced a 36 year old Simpson with Saad & Williams. We are immediately better.
We have not lost a 'must have' in 2020....and here's the thing. There's still a draft period upcoming.

I'd wait just a little longer before evaluation, but even right now.....we're way in front.

Given Martin situation last year, we always had to pay slight overs to get Saad to come to us this year. Players and managers would be put off wanting to commit in the future otherwise.

In last 2 off seasons have brought in 3 top 10 players (Martin, Williams & Saad) for pick 8.

Would have preferred a new dawn by way of trading & re-introducing the PSD. CFC will get done but you’ll have to be patient & trust us. It’ll be alright in the end.
