So can someone summarise what we have currently on our books? Main list & Rookies?
Who is yet to receive a contract?
We still have to take two picks in the Draft unless we upgrade another rookie?

Owies is still ok as a rookie for one more year isn't he unless rules change?

38/4/1 currently.

Yet to receive a contract - Kennedy, Macreadie, Polson.

2x Senior listed and 1x Rookie listed to be moved on IMO.

Allows for 2x Draft picks and 1x Rookie.

Thinking Polson and Moore the certainties. Then Obrien if traded if not Kennedy

Aren’t primary list sizes rumoured to be 38? and we have to take 2 picks in the draft?

What a schmozzle this year is.

Did you even understand what I put forward? :) .... and of course we paid a little more than we should have for Saad
Again, every situation should be discussed in isolation but the net outcome is what ultimately matters.
Have we improved our squad or gone backwards?

At this stage we've effectively replaced a 36 year old Simpson with Saad & Williams. We are immediately better.
We have not lost a 'must have' in 2020....and here's the thing. There's still a draft period upcoming.

I'd wait just a little longer before evaluation, but even right now.....we're way in front.
Ok, let's toddle along your lane of logic, and remember that GWS got pick 10 for losing Williams... how does the Saad trade look now?

Free agency is about cap space and player opportunities, not trade currency. It's to be adjudged separately, not bundled in to make a crappy deal look sweeter.

No, I haven't delisted Ed at all

Rather than picking one option, lay out your best 22
FB: Plowman Jones Williamson
HB: Docherty Weitering Saad
C: SPS Walsh Williams
HF: Fogarty C.Curnow Fisher
FF: Kemp McKay Martin

R: TDK Cripps E.Curnow

Int: Murphy, Setterfield, Cuningham, Dow

EMG from: Casboult, Silvagni, O'Brien, Betts, Newnes, Gibbons, Marchbank, McGovern, Newman, Macreadie, Philp, Pittonet

Possibility that Newnes and Cuningham will be in a strong positional battle for the one spot, though with different play styles, strengths and weaknesses.

On current output, Cuners and Dow won't play ahead of Newnes and Gibbons. Levi will replace Charlie short term

Newman will be starting 22 if he has recovered from a knee

I did edit in that Cuningham and Newnes will be battling for a spot. Both Newnes and Gibbons would be competing with Fogarty, Cuningham, and each other.

Newman ahead of whom? Williamson? We need speed and defensive application in what has all the makings of a very attacking team, and I'm failing to see where Newman fits into that, at all.

Back-up to Docherty, hence why he's on a 1 year deal.

Newman's output as a distributor was way beyond any other general defender before his injury. If he recovers, I suspect he will play early, especially given Teague's mantra of playing mature players, who take the game on by run and or by foot

Surely Williamson is senior enough and consistent enough in his application to not be overlooked in favour of a guy who only does one thing well when he needs to be doing several things well.

You don't drop someone in the side to be a designated kick from defence if they offer absolutely nothing else at an AFL standard. That's a huge tactical opportunity for the opposition. Is there something wrong with Weitering, Williamson, Williams or Docherty's ability and decision making by foot?

Too much moneyball with that move, not enough football.

So if the back 6 are:

Jones,Weiters,Plowman,Williamson,Saad,Doc

Where does that leave Marchbank? Can see him playing on a wing or we could play him as a forward. Can definetly take a Mark.

On iPhone using BigFooty.com mobile app

Liked Williamson to wing in the last game, hopefully that continues (the boot into the forwards 👍)
Marchbank can then float on a HBF.

Nah Jones is nearly done so marchbank in defence
Jones nearly done? This from ESPN in September 2020

Who is the best at defending one-on-ones?
The competition is blessed with some elite defenders. Harris Andrews, Jeremy McGovern, Steven May and Darcy Moore, to name a few. But none of them can claim the title of the best one-on-one defender.

That honour goes to Carlton's Liam Jones.

Of the top 50 players to contest one-on-ones, Jones lost the fewest - just 8 percent. This year, the Blues defender engaged in 88 one-on-one battles and won or halved 81 of those.

The next best in this category was Jake Lever who lost four of his 35 one-on-ones, for a loss rate of 11 percent.

Williams won't be playing in the back 6, nor should Weitering be part of the conversation. Willo can play up on a wing.

You still need a 7th defender as part of the rotations and Newman has better IQ than most of the back 6 you named

Scared we've screwed our TPP for the long term with these two latest deals.

I think we'll be alright if we don't overpay for another high priced recruit next year.

Murphy and Betts retiring next year will alleviate any TPP stress. Maybe Casboult and Ed the year after. Then we'll get big relief with McGovern either on a reduced contract or off the books.

Plowman. Jones. Docherty.
Saad. Weitering. Williamson.
Walsh. Ed. SPS.
Martin. Casboult. Cuningham.
Betts. Harry. McGovern.
R. TDK. Cripps. Williams.
I. Murphy. Fisher. Setterfield. Kemp.
E. Pitto. Marchbank. Dow. Gibbons.

Newman. O’Brien. Macreadie. JSOS. Kennedy. Philp. Stocker.
Polson. Ramsay. Cottrell. Owies. Honey. Phillips. Moore.

Charlie injured.

I go with Betts and Polson to the rookie list.

I've always looked at it from the point of view of what's gone out vs what's coming in. (There's more to it than that, but keeping it simple here)
GWS got pick #10? That's the leagues initiative. It has nothing to do with what we did. What if GWS came first? Does that make things better now, somehow?
Your argument doesn't make sense....and if you want to track that path....What if GWS matched us instead of Geelong? We don't go after Williams? We would have, wouldn't we and how much do you think we would have paid? A lot...right?

Our net gain is positive and we got at least two of the three players we wanted....for now.
Full assessment can only come about after the draft but at this stage, I'd give us a B+. Should have been an A but one year too long for Williams and had we got that next years second from Essendon instead of instead of #48.
