Plenty of AFL team lists are bloated and will need to be reduced, as per new AFL initiatives, aligning teams to increase professionalism and higher quality standards, it’s the only way the completion can flourish going forward.

It's because there are too many teams

As things stand, Carlton has moved on the most players having not attracted any currency, along with Essendon & North Melbourne, with a total of 11 players.
We keep telling ourselves we have depth......but keep shuffling out players in large numbers. Maybe this year :)

Still a little disappointed in losing Macreadie and Phillips though.

To those who are suggesting Oscar McDonald: if that's the kind of player we're looking at, we would have been better off sticking with Macreadie.

Why did you quote me re: Rowe? What are you confused about?
I'm not confused, I just don't think Rowe was solid. He conceded so many goals through bad positioning and contested work.

Kennedy is the best inside midfielder we have next to Cripps. Lose him and we are in deep water. Cripps will not have any rotational support again this year.
Setterfield is best starting midfield and is Crippa's side kick but he also needs to be rotated and supported. IMHO you need 2 with another off the bench. I would argue that maybe Stocker can be used but we all know what the coaching panel feel about this kid.

Macreade is the best developing KP defender we have and by the sounds of it, we have just got his body right. Makes no sense in delisting him. Except for Marchbank, who IMO is best 22, we have no others developing. We need at least 2 KP defenders developing. Delisting this kid is a huge mistake. Huge mistake both with quality and needs.

There are players on our list, who will add very little long terms compared to these 2. We have taken our eye off the ball long term. Will hurt.
Kennedy is not that, and Macreadie wasn't really that either. These are outlandish statements.

Our list was heavy with non performers , being critical is to teams interest, unpleasant but a reality.
There are still quite a few that need to be reviewed, players that just can't get on the park or are unable to harvest talent On/Off inconstant types.
List optimization can take few years but we've been too slow in the past to react, we're improving.

What do you think the coaches feel about Stocker? - this bloke is a total mystery to me...please expand ?

P.S whilst not a total waste of time and money like some players still on the books - Kennedy is pure depth now as far as the club is concerned - nothing more. His best attributes are on display when playing forward - because he can mark and kick a goal better than any other third tall in the side but with the hope that Charlie comes back and McGovern starts to earn some of his pay and Levi still playing and SOJ still there - Kennedy is depth at best in Club figurings. Kennedy may have had ambitions to become a FT mid when he arrived - that is what he was slated for - but injury and bad management of it have stuffed that...pity but that is life in AFL for a lot of players...

now give me the bad news on Stocker- apart from the weirdo deluxo fact that he left the team and went home and wasn't traded out...?

Plow at 191 cm is only 2cm shorter than Dylan Grimes and Marchy at 193cm is the same height. Plow did a pretty good job on Jack Darling this year and barring the Hawk Jack Darling is nearly the hardest player to move off the ball. Not saying that either are the long term answer but both could easily pinch hit if required and if there is a gorilla down there Levi could cover. This board has a "sky is falling" mentality - WE NEED small forwards, We NEED KPD cover. We may well have cleared a list spot for said cover but even if not we are a long long way away from having a KPD crisis.
They're roughly the same size, I can't see him doing too well on Hawkins, King, Dixon, Cameron etc who are all much larger men.
The sky isn't going to fall if we are unable to recruit a crumbing forward or KPD to develop but personally, I'd rather we did find one of each rather than simply opting to say **** it, we're good as is.

Still a little disappointed in losing Macreadie and Phillips though.

I hear your disappointment Harks but HM hasn’t been able to get on the park. I’ve been hoping for the last couple of off seasons that he might come good....
If we are honest to ourselves, we have removed enough driftwood over the last 2 or 3 years to start an inferno.

Our best 22 is good, missing really just 1 quality inside ball winner, but go past the 22 and the depth falls away quickly.

How far we go will depend largely on whether the young developing midfielders (Philp, Stocker, Dow, Fog, LOB, Kemp) come on or not, and whether Charlie can get fit.

The Dow/LOB draft could come back to bite us on the backside. We really needed that 1 extra young gun midfielder. To much up picks 3 and 10 in the same draft, picking midfielders, is a fair blemish. Hopefully at least 1 of these 2 emerges as a topline midfielder but the jury is well and truly out.

You could argue Richmond don't have any 'traditional' KPD's...they are all undersized and more mobile, which has helped their game style being based on running and movement.

Talking about guys like Grimes & Broad being able to hold down key roles on the big forwards...they were taught to do this, they weren't that good at it early in their careers. Recently they got Balta who is bigger, but very athletic. None of their KPD's have to be hidden or banned from kicking the ball...they can all contribute a bit offensively.
Dave Astbury would be the only player that falls into that category

96 players in 8 years = Ave. 12 per year.
That's over two whole playing lists in 8 years.....Not bad.

Macreadie, like Giles could have been a player but that's two KPD's I had high hopes for, losing their careers for injury.

Phillips was a high risk/high reward project player, but right now, we have little time for projects. That's fair enough.
We have to have a competitive VFL side as well as a quality AFL side next year. It just works better that way an which is why I think we'll be acquiring some senior players for both squads.

As I said in another thread. All those we have delisted we can pick up again after the draft if need be.
This draft while compromised is one where gems could be pick up late due to no exposure. If the team have a couple up their sleeve hoping they slide it might mean we take more selections. It’s good to be flexible this draft

It’s time to expect more than maybe he’ll be right in ???
we need to hit the park yesterday not when their bodies right ,sick of waiting for players to get over niggles etc go get ready players now that can contribute from day dot
HELLO Saad Williams Fogarty

We will always be screwed regardless. Quanor played afl since u10’s yet was still eligible.
Its a joke of a system
And they get McInnes this year, how is he NGA eligible it’s just ridiculous, Bumbers have 2 this year as well, fair dinkum give us a ****EN break free hits left right and centre and what did we get for assistance a couple of mature age picks worth next to nothing and then the year after they hand the ugly step child in GC a treasure trove of assistance, it’s a ****EN joke enough already, so called equalisation is ****ing killing us with its inequality. 🤬🤬🤬

Kennedy

Apparently being offered deals but surely we might reconsider:

Casboult
Murphy
Betts

Anyone see it differently to that?
Feel like I had this pretty spot on back on Sept 19!

EDIT: Phillips is the one I didn't see coming, I think in any other year he gets another contract. He strikes me as the type that will dominate a lower league kicking bags for a couple of seasons and will find himself back on an AFL list once his body is more developed.

SurreyBlue how does the coaching panel feel about Stocker?

I will tell you what I know. See if you can join the dots.
The kid is a footballer and not an athlete.
The kid believes in himself and has self belief in his attributes.
The kid isn’t a follow the leader type but an extrovert.
The kid doesn’t suck up to get ahead.
We need more of these types in our team.

Honestly wouldn't mind if we looked at Jackson Trengove just for KPD/Ruck depth over some of the other names that have been thrown around the last few pages

Ben McKay wasn’t/isn’t coming to sit behind Jones until 2023. He’d be on overs at North and will be a key pillar of their backline.

Sam De Koning fits that transition better if we are looking at the brothers. I can’t imagine him coming cheap though.

He's OOC next year though.

Got the same competitiveness and game sense as his brother, and comes from an ultra successful family in general. You'd back him to get the absolute most out of himself and get up to speed pretty quickly. TDK's development has been nothing short of amazing in the few years he's been at the club. Who would of thought he'd be the only best 22 mainstay of our first 3 2017 ND picks after 3 years?

Hopefully the club is laying the ground work early and already starting some succession planning for Jones. SDK would be perfect.

Ultimate swiss army knife - plays ruck and key defender competently, but has never been above B-grade. Not the worst option given where our list sits.

Suckling also pretty unlucky to be delisted. Surely he gets a go somewhere else?

I rate him, but turning 31 next year and is in a similar boat to Levi. He's a short term option, whereas I prefer a project ruck/key defender.
