I think it's likely that SPS will play further up the ground next year, as many here have been calling for. Hoping so anyhow. I just watched the 2nd quarter v Freo last year when we kicked 4 goals to 1. SPS with a strong mark and goal, looked likely in the front half. Hopefully the plan was to improve his defensive ability/pressure and unleash him as a mid/forward for 2021. Also a nice goal from Dow on the run and another assist to Gov.

We have Newman and Marchbank (hopefully, would be a boost) to come in to our defensive mix for 2021 and I'm tipping one of Williams/Witherden/Saad to join. Simpson going out.

Weiters
Plowman
Jones
Doc
Marchbank
Williamson
Williams/Witherden/Saad
SPS if required
Polson if he gets another contract

Kemp + Stocker + O'Brien at half back are options also.

As far as recruiting mids for 2021 - I only want absolute quality. Not very keen on Graham or others who are developing. I'd rather throw the gauntlet to Dow, Cuners, Stocker to claim a midfield spot and not look back. I'm happy to keep Murph on next year, but put it on our young mids to keep him out of the team.

Simpson's retirement has all but guaranteed that SPS is now a permanent part of the defensive unit. The only way that's changing is if we get both Williams and Witherden.

Cottrell >>>>> LOB.

Would love to hear some considered reasoning on this call.

Because "mongrel" isn't enough for me. LOB was building into some really solid form at the back end of last year, and while he was (fairly) supplanted by Newnes this year, I really haven't seen anything from Cottrell that makes me think he'd ever be a staple of the senior side. LOB, on the other hand, I could easily see being a 150-200 game player.

Mobility is an issue with all three, but at least Witherden has elite foot skills.

On SPS, what do you think it will take to get his body right and do you realistically think he can peak at?
He still looks and plays slim, not much fat, but not much muscle. Seems to not have confidence to or can't (?) kick it further than 35m?
Weak quads/hamstrings?

Okay, I’m not sure how you could possibly make that call about LOB.

Cottrell will be groomed into a defensive runner. Unlike LOB has actually shown his running ability on match day.

it’s a bit of a “vibe” thing but for me Cottrell just has it, LOB doesn’t. At all.

Interesting one SPS, not a penetrating kick & lacks leg speed. Does his best work in & around contest. For me hes a inside mid/ part time half forward & then we gain maximum out of his strengths plus he hits the 30-40 metre pass inside 50 that we really lack with good ball users. An interesting watch next season & he gets ripped for not going hard enough by supporters but when you playing on a dangerous nippy forward you cant over commit & have to hold your feet , not go to ground.

Ahern, Durdin, Pittard, Williams, Wood among 11 delisted at North. Some of these guys will be great DFA pickups as role players for strong teams.
Just saw this. Would've thought a few of those were stiff. They do play for North so not sure any offer an upgrade on what we have now. But some of them have either been good in the past for them or had plenty of hype.

Couldn't say if there's any that I'd take straight off the bat. I reckon they'll be heappps from other sides that we will though.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's only 20-30 kids taken at the draft and the rest is made of my club swaps.

Was a fan of Ahern during his draft year, but getting injured really hurt his development.
I'd be interested in him as a DFA.

I've seen much better skills from LOB, better disposal, better hands, better vision, better awareness. I've seen plenty of strong running from him. He coolly slotted a goal from a similar spot to Cottrell's game winner last week, and while the game wasn't on the line per se, his composure in front of the sticks was an area of concern I'd had for him previously.

I think he's been shafted a little with the coaching changes. Bolton seemingly had decided he'd benefit from a year spent as a negating runner, so he wasn't getting a heap of the ball. Then Teague freed him up a little and he got involved in some nice passages of play late last year. I'm talking multiple possessions in the same chain, overlap run, handballing and then offering blocks for his teammates. He was finding some decent space on the outside.

And then this year we recruited Newnes, who I think has been an astute pickup and helped balance the age/experience profile of the senior side. But with the reserves competition being annihilated, LOB has instead been thrown on ball to work on his contested game. Something that I think will help him in the long term.

Cottrell is raw, so maybe he comes good. But barring his mark and goal against Sydney, he's been a lot like Polson when we were playing him forward. Running around looking like he's trying hard, but not really have much of an effect on the game.

I think Cottrell is a player who provides a breath of fresh air to a struggling side, but I don't think he's a player that helps a side progress to the next level. LOB is a player who looks a bit at sea in a struggling side, but when it clicks he'll help us take the next step.

He’s the one I am interested in too. Loved his work as a half forward in his draft year, freakish and skillful. I don’t feel he’s ever been given enough opportunity in his natural position by his AFL clubs.

Durdin is the other interesting one, was a gun ruck who could play key position at either end as a junior. Has failed as a key defender for sure but I wouldn’t mind seeing him in the Casboult role.

The rest don’t interest me, maybe there’s a few who could thrive in a top four team with more support.

Look at North and their situation. Be happy we are beyond that point and shouldn’t be doing that for a while yet once again. Their whole backline needs a rebuild now. Some clubs in serious strife due to poor list management over the last 2-3 years. List numbers would have some impact on that cull but not 11 players worth.

Very surprised that they're cutting Ahern.

Had some really good performances for them a few years back after he came back from the knee injury. Including a 37 disposal game!

Missed most of last year, but came back in for 5 games late in the year and was pretty solid.

Only half a dozen games this year and not much to show for it.

Are they playing him out of position, or has he just not come on?

Reckon Bam Bam Kennedy is in strife unfortunately
I'll probably be shot down for this but if Bam Bam gets cut over guys like Lang, Polson, Moore or Macreadie I'll be fuming. We need to see what some of these other forwards like Phillips & O'Dwyer can do as well and I'd be equally as pissed if Kennedy gets cut before them.

Kennedy has improved albeit slowly but he has improved.

Out of contract and has yet to cerment a place in the best 22. He might very well ask for a trade, don't think he fits into Teague's plans going forward (in my opinion)

Marley Williams and Jasper Pittard let go by the Kangas. I'd say we should look into one of their services. My preference would be Williams; he can take a small forward, has a bit toughness, has a crack and a tidy kick. Could do a lot worse. Surprising delisting.
