Williams is a ball hunter and can find it in the middle and outside.

The only thing that may make our life a little more difficult though, is if GWS lose someone like Cameron and have the ability to match our bid.
We'd then have to trade, which may impact on other matters.....although GWS will get back a first anyway, ~10
That's the thing, though; they lose Cameron and match our bid, they're still in deep shit next year when someone else is out of contract, and the year after that.

They can't keep taking a whack-a-mole attitude towards list management. Eventually, they're going to get overwhelmed. Either they take some pain - and losing both Cameron and Williams in a single off season (players who are good, but in positions they can cover) will hurt - or they keep dancing and hope there's a chair left for them when the music stops.

Yep. They have to let go.

They are hanging onto Shaw and Ash is coming on, also.
The 'we'll show them' attitude wold only be a fail in the long run.
They may even have some regrets around Coniglio right now.

The other thing is that GWS do love their first rounders. Love them :)

Can almost guarantee they won't match it.

Good get Williams, glad it’s wrapped up this early. Versatile, quick and in his prime solves a big issue for us. Like a few others don’t rate him as top echelon but a very very good player nevertheless.

Interesting that we’ve sold it to him as a midfield opportunity, Teaguey wasn’t huge on pinch hitting even reluctant at times. Can we expect him to be full time there even if Saad falls through with Newman coming back?

On Saad not looking forward to dealing with Essendon, Essendon probably don’t know what they’re doing and who they need to keep as a priority until they know exactly who’s going out, if the rumours are true it looks like Doodoo will be fighting wars on many fronts and with any luck won’t have the luxury of leaving deals to the last minute.

Didn't McCarthy/GWS say something along the lines that if a player didn't want to be at GWS, then tell us and tell us soon? And hasn't Williams just done that? If so, would seem silly if GWS did match... But one is never sure in the GWS/AFL world....

They won't match, the compo is too good.

Hopefully throwing this up in the right thread. If T Taranto can be shaken from the GWS tree, what do we think about this trade:

- Pick 7 and next years first for T Taranto and a second coming back
- Trade our second rounder and the second rounder from GWS to Geelong for one of their first round picks.
- Geelongs first round pick to Essendon for Saad

I love the addition of Williams as an inside midfielder. He is exactly what we need.

If Carlton can secure the services of at least ONE of the below players, we will be in great shape next year:
- Graham
- Saad
- Crouch
- Merrett

The way I see it, bringing in Williams and any combination of those players results in:
IN:
Williams (GWS)
Saad (Essendon)
Curnow (Carlton - long term injury)
Newman (Carlton - long term injury)
Marchbank (Carlton - long term injury)

OUT:
Simpson (Retired)
(two of) Plowman or SPS or Williamson
Casboult or McGovern

And, a list management headache for the omission of either:
Newnes, Cunningham or Kennedy

Plus, the players that will be vying for best 22 selection:
Silvagni
Polson
Dow

If you look at our ins, even with can only secure one of those 4 players mentioned, we add 4 genuine A-Grade players (Williams, Saad, Curnow and Marchbank) and a proven, creative half-back in Newman.

I see us lining up like:

B: Marchbank*, Jones, Newman*
HB: Docherty, Weitering, Saad*
C: Walsh, Cripps, Murphy
HF: Martin, C Curnow*, Fisher
F: Gibbons, McKay, De Koning

Followers: Pittonet, Williams*, E Curnow

Interchange: Newnes, Setterfield, Williamson, Betts

And, I really think that list is the list of a team that is thereabouts the top 6.

Fantastic news re: Williams contract, got him signed up for a long time and on very fair money.

Fantastic to hear Saad is gettable and would welcome him with open arms at the Blues. However, if the Saints have the better offer I really don't want to get into a bidding war for him. As I've said previously in other threads, Saad is a genuine gun but at best is a cream player: would be awesome to have but not a necessity. If we miss out on him it's not the end of the world, if we get him you beauty.

Spot on would prefer Graham!

Id be comfortable going into round 1 next year with doc, williamson, newman and sps as our smaller defenders...so yeah as you said, not the end of the world if we sont get Saad.
I wouldnt be happy seeing Wiliamson continue at HB. IMO will thrive as a winger. SPS is not your run and carry type and best suited playing in the cente or as a half forward. If we dont get Saad I suggest we look elsewhere Jayden Hunt would come a lot cheaper and has lots of dash.

Willo has an offensive mindset which I like. Not afraid to take the game on and has a beautiful left foot. If he can transition to a role up the ground, then it’ll benefit our forward 50 entries

Zac Williams is a fantastic pick up. Will add a lot of pace in the midfield. Giving his injury concerns 850k is a very bold price for him tho. More of a 600-700k type of player.

Dreamt this, can something like this be even done.....😂
I am pretty shit at these :$

Dow+ 2 Rd pick for one of Cats 1st Rd picks + Constable/Narkle

Pick 7 & acquired Cats 1st Rd pick for Merret + future 2nd Rd pick

Our 2021 2nd Rd pick for Graham

Cuningham for Witherden

We have enough players now who either don’t deserve a list spot or husband present remuneration far exceeds their output. Williams comes with runs on the board and I’d expect the due diligence already done about salary cap space and future player retention needs.

I’ve seen some talk about a future salary cap issue when blokes like McKay, Curnow and Walsh start really hitting their straps and demand a little more cash. Is anyone worried that if we spend all this cash on Williams and say Saad or another potential trade target that it will come back to bite us in the long run? I’d hate to lose any of those blokes that’s for sure!

We have money banked from underpaying the cap the last 3 years, this must be spent this year or it disappears, I hope this is the reason we were able to chase and land a FA without putting pressure on the future cap.
