Not that I can see. I always like him up forward though, but again will he work hard enough defensively and apply pressure?so does he have a role at Carlton, and if so what is it?

Ramsay won't be gone 100%On a few of the topics being discussed, my take...
Cunnington: Big yes, was in AA form early this year. Would add a Hodge, Birchall like impact to our team (minus premiership experience). Would probably mean we move one of our older mids out.
Hunter: Another big yes, great by foot and can find the goals. Brings finals/flag experience.
Who makes way? Finbar hasn't done enough, he'll be first to go. After that, who knows. No secret we might have some retirements. Unclear who though yet.
Polson - gone, Lang - gone, Ramsay - probably gone, Goddard - gone, Moore - gone. That's 6 already plus whoever retires.
I'll say this again, SPS IS NOT A MIDFIELDER! Look at his game against North last year, he gets slaughtered in there. No defensive pressure and too small, big body mids kill him.
I'm expecting some movement this year, players maybe we don't want to be pushed out or traded, will. First time in years where other teams might start asking questions about more of our players. If it gets us a better result in the long run, good riddance.
This is dumb.I'll say this again, SPS IS NOT A MIDFIELDER! Look at his game against North last year, he gets slaughtered in there. No defensive pressure and too small, big body mids kill him.
This is dumb.
Here are some players, their height and their weight:
Dion Prestia: 175cm, 82kg.
Trent Cotchin: 182cm, 86cm
Jack Viney: 178cm, 84kg
Tim Kelly: 182cm, 81kg
Josh P. Kennedy: 189cm, 97kg
Steele Sidebottom: 184cm, 85kg
Luke Shuey: 183cm, 90kg
Taylor Adams:181cm, 83kg
Shaun Burgoyne: 186cm, 89kg
Dylan Shiel: 182cm, 83kg
SPS is 182cm, and 78kg. He has spent his entire ******* career except for right ******* now as a midfielder. He was recruited as a midfielder, has played exceptional games at AFL level as a midfielder.
So, what is the key difference you're seeing here? It's pretty ******* clear: all of these older, more established midfielders are much, much heavier. Viney is 4cm shorter, and 6 kg heavier. Shuey is a cm taller, and is 12kg heavier. The question becomes, why is this so? Is it merely the effects of time?
Harry Perryman: 184cm, 80kg
Oliver Florent: 185cm, 81kg
Jack Bowes: 187cm, 85kg
Will Brodie: 189cm, 89kg
Jack Scrimshaw: 193cm, 88kg
Tim Taranto: 187cm, 87kg
Will Setterfield: 192cm, 87kg
These are the midfielders from the same draft. Some have only played as flankers to this point, some have taken their place as full time mids; what's the difference, you ask? The players who have taken on full time midfielder roles - Taranto, Brodie, Florent - have achieved AFL midfielder weight ranges. SPS hasn't.
We knew this was an issue, given we went for no taller/bulkier mids other than Matt Kennedy (190cm, 88kg) and Setterfield, and it's only very recently those players have started demonstrating their quality. There's also the fact ably demonstrated by GWS that when you cause players to bulk up quickly, you get soft tissue injuries; I'd be interested in hearing from someone with expertise in this area, as I am not an expert and could be confusing correlation with causation.
SPS can tackle, and he can find his own ball. He is an AFL quality first or second ring midfielder; someone who can get their own ball, but is just as useful on the fringes of a stoppage to either receive the ball or to distribute it. What we need from him is for him to put on some more muscle to allow him to get stronger, and for Teague to move him back into the midfield, either in the seconds or in the ones; I do not care which.
I really, truly think that we will not see the best of SPS until he gets to the other side of 24. He's a thinker, he sees the game on a different tier than other players; I think he has the reputation for lacking intensity and aggression because for me his game feel is not instinctive. He actively thinks about each option he sees at any given time, and because of this he looks more laconic than he actually is.It’s a good write up and size/weight is a massive part of midfielders being able to compete consistently.
Whats important to factor in is, SPS was 76kg when drafted, does he have the frame or genetics to bulk up? Two kgs in 4 years is very very slow.
The only think in my mind that is holding him back in becoming a really good defender or midfielder is his lack of intensity and aggression at the ball and the ball carrier and his repeat efforts aren’t great.
Im not sure if adding 2-3kgs addresses my biggest concern with his game as I see it as an effort based issue.
Especially if you're a parked car.Now this would be an impact player. fingers crossed
That's worrying and a little confusing. Do you mean one out, or one in and two out (given we might draft Tom this year)?Grapevine tells me we will have one less silvagni next year
McKay McGovern Martin JSOS Marchbank Curnow Dow Kreuzer NewmanHow many of those are soft tissue injuries?
Edit: nevermind it's 4 soft tissue injuries
My understanding is that club load up with more senior players to help our vfl team. We took so many young players in the National draft. Our list was young, but the coaching group started to play the discarded players that the club top the list up with. This year was the first year that sos could have a significant crack at the rookie draft. Marchbank Kennedy Setterfield were all young players that we traded for.We have to. We knew Phillips to be a longer term prospect and given what we've seen of him to date, he should treated accordingly.
There aren't many that can find the goals he does, but his body is ever so slight and not AFL ready.
Hard to gauge what sort of person he may be from the other side of the fence, but he does seem to be a bit of a shy type....for whatever that may mean.
Interesting that our rookie picks have been dismal until after the rookie draft in 2018 where we took on Goddard and Bugg.
Since then we took Gibbons & Cottrell in the 2018 supplementary draft and then Honey & Phillips in last years rookie drafts.
What a difference these 4 players are compared to what came before them from 2015 onwards.

when Carlton had a solid block of wins late last season JSOS was involved in so many of the goals through creativity or direct assists, I'd be very sad to see him gone. He has great footy IQ, something this team needs more of.Such a shame.

I was worried he’d get stupid offers from other clubs, that’s massive newsWeiters 4 year deal, I just fist pumped the air, so ******* good!

Burgoyne was this way at Port, and Sam Mitchell was this way his entire career. Priddis had a similar read as well. Rankine, Voss in his later years; some players and people do not play the game on the same set of instincts as other people. I think the mission for the development team at Carlton for SPS up until last season was his endurance due to his missed preseasons; only this year has he reached an AFL flanker's level of running.
To an extent, I see something similar in LOB as well; a player who you will not see his best until he gets to AFL weight ranges, with the idea behind drafting them both being that almost anyone can gain muscle and weight, but class and touch is eternal.

It would be sad simply because of the name. On talent it’s a borderline best 22 player in a bottom 6 team and a long shot KPD. The worst thing about losing Jack would be getting minimal return.Absolutely.
Exactly the type of player we need. Never going to accumulate heaps of stats or kick a bag of 6 goals, but he is the 1%er king.
I mentioned on here a week or so ago that I wouldn’t blame Jack and Ben if they had lost their love for the club after the way their Dad was treated. Apart from losing a very good player in Jack and a promising KPD in Ben, it’s the fact that a celebrated name in the history of the club appears to be being completely erased. All apparently due to animosity from a power struggle.
I really hope this club gets its act together behind the scenes one of these days.
