Players set to take 10 per cent pay cut

JON RALPH

AFL players expect to take a pay cut of around 10 per cent next year after a telephone hookup with their player union on Tuesday.

Players were told there are no firm answers yet on a pay deal or list sizes, but the expectation is clubs will have lists of around 38 plus rookies next year.
The Herald Sun understands the new pay deal is likely to land with pay cuts of around 10 per cent next season, with the AFLPA having to agree to an alternation of the current collective bargaining agreement.

The league has had to show the PA its detailed financial estimates for next year, having already agreed to a lesser TV deal with broadcaster Channel Seven.

The AFL is aware there might be no full crowds at AFL venues given the risk of COVID in 2021 and clubs are also bracing for some members not to re-sign given financial pressures.

But the players could eventually agree to a pay cut on the 2021 salary cap, with a clawback provision if the league exceeded its financial estimates.
The players are also keen to open up other revenue streams next year for the AFL so they can maximise money coming into the game, which might help minimise pay cuts.

The league had initially pushed for a pay cut of up to 30 per cent, with the AFL’s soft cap for clubs to come in at only $6.2 million next year.
But the players are expected to relent on their initial offer of only a five per cent cut given the league’s detailed estimates.

Club officials including Sydney chief executive Tom Harley have pushed in recent days for the league to clarify its TPP position as soon as possible.

Completely flummoxed just shows how poor the previous regime was.

BTW we must be getting something reasonable for Brown, surely?

Remember when a handful of us slagged the Preuss->Melbourne trade when WE ****ing sweetened the deal to get Tyson?
At the time I had some hope that Tyson could be used as part of the inside mid rotation to help Cunners. That is a distant memory now.

North Melbourne is standing firm on trades for Ben Brown and Shaun Higgins.

On Higgins we are in a strong position, as he's contracted and we may well decide to use him as a mentor to our midfield group for one more season. But with Brown we got ourselves into a real no man's land IMO, and didn't handle it the best way.

Regardless of what happens - Take comfort in knowing that Joyce would have accepted the following...

Geelong - Higgins
North - Narkle

Melbourne - Ben Brown
North - Pick 43 & Alex Neale-Bullen

nah he would have folded and given him a 4th year, don't be ridiculous.

If we had decided that Brown needed to be moved on, how should they have handled it?

I think that Collingwood is showing that these situations are not easy to manage well.
