Ben Brown told to look for a new home

Ben Brown's career at North Melbourne is all but over, with the club telling him to look for a new home after contract negotiations fell apart.

North Melbourne has confirmed to The Age that the 27-year-old full forward, who has endured a difficult season, has been encouraged to talk to other clubs so that a trade can be arranged.

Brown is out of contract but not a free agent.

It caps of an unfathomable 12 months for Brown, who this time last year had kicked more than 60 goals in three consecutive seasons.

Form and injury saw him kick just eight goals in nine games in 2020, while Brown also endured a personal tragedy off the field.
Sources close to Brown's negotiations with North Melbourne have told The Age he was offered a three-year contract at the start of 2020 worth upwards of $750,000 per season.

Brown and his management rejected that offer, wanting a longer-term deal.

North Melbourne are no longer willing to renegotiate and have advised Brown and his management to look elsewhere.
It continues the club's hardline list management approach under new football boss Brady Rawlings and young coach Rhyce Shaw.

North Melbourne last week announced the delisting of 11 players, including leadership group members Jamie Macmillan and Jasper Pittard, as well as comeback hero Majak Daw.

Shaw believes Brown's lead-up play is not suited to his preferred game style, which in many ways mirrors that of his former club Sydney – slower, considered ball movement that prioritises contested possession.

Brown's manager, former Essendon premiership player Adam Ramanauskas, has reached out to Hawthorn, Collingwood and Gold Coast.

Hawthorn confirmed to The Age that they're not interested.

Collingwood's salary cap remains reasonably tight and the Magpies are concentrating on resigning All-Australian squad member Darcy Moore and star mid/forward Jordan De Goey.

The Suns are still entertaining the idea of trading for Brown, but are questioning whether his presence in their forward line would help or hinder the development of young forward Ben King.

Ramanauskas was contacted for comment.

It remains to be seen whether North Melbourne would consider having him back if no club is willing to offer a decent trade in exchange for him.

Brown's case remains a curious one. Since his second season in 2015, he has barely missed a game and booted 63, 61 and 64 goals from 2017 through to 2019, closely behind the Coleman medalist's tally in all three seasons.

His critics would suggest he struggles to find the football unless it's delivered on a lead and that he has far less impact once the ball hits the ground.

But his record is hard to argue with, given how often experts lament the lack of goal-kicking forwards in the modern game.
His tally of 188 goals in his last three seasons before 2020 is more than the last two Coleman medallists Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron kicked during the same period.

The trade period will take place from November 4-12, with the free agency period commencing on October 30.
Alright who from BF has been talking to The Age?

A fair question.

I reckon we might be playing the media to our advantage for a change.

Not sure about that, Brady doesn't strike me as the type to bother too much with media speculation, didn't at West Coast from what I saw but maybe some of our WA posters could confirm or correct me.

I just see tough negotiations going on and to be honest I think the club' initial and current offer is reasonable. The reported $750 x 3 years is fair considering his historical knee issues and unfortunately his form and recurring knee issues in 2020 has done him no favours.

I love Browny, he gives his all and while he can look awkward and gets pushed off the ball, on song he is tough to counter. I hope he stays but I understand why the club is holding firm.

All these clubs want to pillage our experience but don't want to pay for it:

Polec - " The Demons have shown some interest but are unlikely to part with more than a late draft pick to nab the speedster."

Higgins - " The Cats are interested in Higgins but won’t give up one of their three first-round draft picks for a man who turns 33 in March next year."

Seriously, don’t hand away these guys who are clearly good footballers. Anything less than late first rounders or early 2nd rounders for Polec, Goldstein and Higgins is ludicrous. Keep them. As well on Brown, if no team is willing to pony up a 1st rounder for and both sides aren’t willing to sign a deal together, let him walk through the draft. In the AFL draft picks are still severely overrated, I don’t have the stats to back me up on this but I’d wager that a pick outside the ten becomes a 200 game player about 20% of the time and a pick outside the top 20 becomes a 200 game player less than 10%. Don’t give up known assets for peanuts that will likely develop into nothing.
AFL is so far behind in terms of trading picks when you compare it to the NBA.

Pay some of their salaries and watch the music change

If that means iam going to be seeing more of that crappy sideways 10m chipping iam off to watch lawn bowls for the next couple of years.
Do you think that is Shaw's game plan? Watch the first quarter against West Coast and you'll see what it is supposed to be.

We have the same serial offenders and it seems enough is enough.

Our media is more narrow minded, heaps of speculation but he did come out and give “No” plenty of times with players linked

Easy. Both stay. Ditto BB if these ‘suitors’ don’t stump up with appropriate compensation

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Brown and Polec stay to be honest , i can’t see any other club paying Brown what he wants or wanting Polec’s contract but at the same time I really don’t see Brady giving them away for basically zero ... Interesting times .

Agree on all that completely. If he goes North moves on and so be it.

However, this "3years over 750" being rejected is being given far too much airtime off nothing though BE. (imo)

He would have been crazy to reject that midyear at his age, injuries, and form.

It may not have been as big an increase as we think from his current contract.

Apparently it was start of the year, not midyear.
