I wasn't aware politicians commonly made VP picks while their nomination wasn't effectively confirmed, especially when those picks are fellow candidates who are still in the race.
That's exactly my point.

She would be using this against him if he wasn't already the nominee. That's why it's disgusting.

Biden specifically chose a person of colour for the role. That's the definition of racist token appointments. People should be insulted by this, specifically Harris.
Biden picked someone who spread his appeal and made his ticket more viable. You're simply having a cry because the situation now favours minorities and women rather than white men. Shame on you.

I did speak about it. I said when most of the people in politics are white men you're odds on to get one and I don't think Trump ever said he intended to narrow the field down to just white men.

Not picking someone of colour doesn't make it racist, specifically choosing a person of colour is racist.

And I then asked you when the motive becomes clear - is it when the pool of potentials is all white guys? I get the feeling you're being deliberately dense here.

Or are you really with Balls In on this, and of the mind that Trump would have picked a black woman had one emerged as the most qualified candidate? Holy shit, I can barely even type that sentence without falling over in hysterics :tearsofjoy:

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas. You're inventing a fanciful scenario to make a hackneyed point. Perhaps stop being intellectually dishonest and come join the rest of us in the real world.

Content of your character, not the colour of your skin.

Decided by the colour of your skin = racist.

And Trump specifically chose a white guy.

Oh but Biden broadcast it. Biden bad, Trump good :tearsofjoy:

I'm having a cry because minorities and women are being used.

... he chose an ultra-religious conservative to shore up the evangelical vote. No more, no less.

You're treating a hypothetical as if it's reality to compare to an actual reality of a Presidential Candidate using sexism and racism to dupe people.

The real world where the Democratic Party "if you don't vote for me you ain't black" Biden thought he could hit his quota on women and black people by making a token appointment of the woman who bombed out of the race because she wasn't good enough.

I'm having a cry because minorities and women are being used.
Did you have a cry because evangelicals were being used when Pence was selected? Or because moderately conservative old white people were being used when Biden was selected? Or because women were being used when Palin was selected? Or because Jews were being used when Lieberman was selected?

Are they being used if they support the candidate?

This is a good point. If the women and minorities of the USA support having their own succeed on the basis of their gender and race - not their ability then there isn't anything wrong with it anymore.

Generally speaking, this is the same effect as the gender pay gap being pushed by middle management and above women in business to get their own seat at the table - nobody will compare the percentage of women who stayed career focused and made a board seat position to that of men if you talk about the average numbers - you'll even get appointed as a publicity stunt. You'll be paid well, but you know you're there for PR.

Harris is a PR stunt.

Of course she is, like any other VP in history the end game is to win a popularity contest. How can you not see this?

If people are being chosen on the basis of their gender, race, religion etc then it's bad.

Because the Democrats put themselves on top of the ivory tower when it comes to judging people on the content of their character and not the colour of their skin.

Then went and sold out those values.

Oh well, as a female, I think it is fantastic a woman (intelligent, educated, articulate and brings some experience to the position) was chosen for the second highest office in the US. It is after all 2020 and not 1920.

Nobody said Biden was a great communicator, the point is Trump has a long history of racist policies. And while the Dems often take the black vote for granted, the Republicans seem allergic to any policies around the welfare of the black community.

Funnily enough though, you could argue with the deliberate selection of a black woman, Biden isn't taking the black vote for granted, showing a level of progression from his earlier attitude.

You're treating a hypothetical as if it's reality to compare to an actual reality of a Presidential Candidate using sexism and racism to dupe people.
I could accuse you of also treating a hypothetical as if it's reality, with your assertion that selecting someone who used to be in the race as a running mate would be bad if they were actually still in the race.

If people are being chosen on the basis of their gender, race, religion etc then it's bad.
Yep.
As bad as just assuming if someone black achieves anything, they could not have possibly achieved it on merit and the assumption is it is a token gesture only.

Welcome to the nature of democracy, Taylor. Identity politics has been baked into it from the beginning. It was never a meritocracy. The closest thing you'll get to a meritocracy is China, but it's certainly not democratic. And even there I wonder how people would react if it turned out a Uyghur was the most qualified and capable person in the nation to be leader.

Do you think Harris is capable of being VP? If not then are you suggesting that Biden was unable to find a black female VP candidate who was capable? If so, then what is the problem with picking a black woman to run with an old white man against two other old white men?
