Horne watch:

Whilst the Panthers didn’t get the win, it was noticeable just how well Horne ran out the game on Sunday. With the match on the line half way through the last quarter, Jason was involved in a passage of play where he probably had about 4 possessions as he drove us forward.
I was again impressed just how strong he is too. Doesn’t mind a fend off.

I was watching the game yesterday (seems I'm becoming a South fan) and he gets a fair bit of attention at the stoppages. Mind you, gives it straight back. Impressive for a 17yo kid.

Won't write an essay but quick thoughts on Horne's game:

- Was interesting watching him use his left when he was forced to on one occasion going inside 50m. It was a tough kick (~20m finesse kick to a leading forward) but the technique on the left was very good. He overkicked his teammate but the mechanics look good.

- 2 rundown tackles this game, adding to the one he laid a couple of weeks ago. It's been said time and time again, defensive pressure is a real standout.

- Piggy backing off the last point - his work rate in spreading from the contest and following the ball up the ground is also excellent. Just sum up his running and work rate both ways as elite. The exemplar for this is the play someone mentioned earlier of him following the ball up from a stoppage on the back flank all the way up to the forward flank, getting 3 handballs in the process. Excellent running late in the game.

This was his best game since round 1. Building very nicely at senior level.

Love the insight Souup.

Just a question & I'll preface this by saying I completely understand that a 17 year old accumulating big numbers at SANFL level is unlikely. However, do you have any concerns about his accumulation abilities when he comes to AFL level (not in the first few years obviously). Like do you ever see him becoming an AFL mid that averages 25+ disposals?

The u18 champs will be fascinating this year to see if he showcase that ball winning capability against players his own age.

He averaged 26 touches (15 contested), 8 marks, 5 tackles, 6.5 clearances and 1.3 goals a game (157 supercoach point ave) playing SANFL18's last year for the first 6 games of the year before they moved him into the SANFL Seniors side.

To put the stats in context, he averaged the above stats as a 16 year old playing under 18's football. He turned 17 while playing SANFL Seniors in June last year.

Kid has no issues finding the footy. Even over the last 5 guys in the SANFL seniors this year he's averaged 17.2 disposals (88.4 supercoach points) a game playing a mid/forward split.

I know people take the piss out of supercoach scoring so I want to clarify that I think there's good merit to the system they use to calculate them as it endeavours to take into account effectiveness of possession and executing when it matters most. It's a great measure to evaluate the impact a player has on a game. 157 point average is ridiculous as an underager over the first 6 games and 88.4 against men is also very impressive. He's not even 18 yet.

I wonder if he'll even play? Particularly the later games as it'll clash with SANFL finals.

Whilst he has been impressive at SANFL senior level and had great numbers in u/18 SANFL and u/16 champs, I think it's still very important he plants his flag in the championships as the #1 pick and averages around 25+ disposals a game.

If he averages sub 20 disposals a game in the Champs it would raise a few questions.

Those few games are still vitality important to completely vet him as a prospect imo.

I'd hope he's told in no uncertain terms he has to play those games in lieu of SANFL finals....

It'd be pretty impressive if he gets 18-20 touches and a goal in a senior final against too.

The team have been working toward a premiership all year, it'd he hard to let that go given he's been a big part of it.

From a North perspective, we know what he can do against men, we've seen he can match them in senior finals in 2020 and throughout 2021.

I want to view him vs his own age group, vs the top prospects we are going to have to ultimately evaluate him against.

I want to see him up against a midfield of Daicos, Sonsie, Callaghan, Long, Goater etc.

It's important he demonstrates he's the #1 pick against his own age group at the u/18 level. We had no championships in his bottom age year either, he has no other body of work other than half a dozen games in the SANFL u/18's.

He's a very impressive prospect (arguably as exciting as any prospect in recent years) and his SANFL senior statistics are good without being mind blowing.

If he never plays against this age group, I think that's quite a problem for North recruiters. His recruitment and ultimate evaluation is purely then a guess and estimation, when it doesn't have to be....

Interesting. I'm no AFL recruiter, so I'll take your word for it.

I would find it a little odd that it'd be more important for him to dominate against kids than to put up impressive performances, as a 17yo, against men and play in a senior finals series.

It will be a slaughter.

Hmm maybe. I think the SANFL kids who missed out on champs due to covid last year have shown they can transition to AFL pretty well. Thilthorpe is on track for a 40 goal debut season in an ordinary side, if he played every game.

He might think it is more important to help his SANFL team win a premiership than to be the number 1 pick
