Port desperately want NWM, it's why they want to move up to 12 for 16 and Ladhams

If we split we'd be looking at Goater/ Ward at 7 and who knows a Draper or Rachelle at 15? Wouldn't mind Johnson if he slips past West Coast
Don't think Rachele will last until 15

Wish I shared your confidence, we've lost too many players that appeared to be high character lads that obviously passed our recruiting teams analysis of the "go home" factor yet here we have a player that has obvious red flags. I pray your confidence is backed up by the lads loyalty if we do settle on him but I'm not afraid to admit I have my concerns.
As much as many on here would like to deny it, there is a certain kind of person, especially found in rich Melbourne private schools, who think that Adelaide is a joke. There are people who will be *embarrassed* to talk their old Melbourne school buddies about their new life in Adelaide. Those old school buddies will to think of themselves as actually *superior* because they live in their cherished part of Melbourne. They will joke about how boring it must be to live in a shorty little backwater like Adelaide.

These people actually exist and they actually think and live their lives this way.

This kind of thing matters to some people. They want to be proud of their life, and they can’t be if their friends and family pity them for living in Adelaide. It doesn’t matter how good our ‘culture’ is, because it won’t change the friends and family back home.

Our recruiters need to not recruit this kind of person, because they will be exactly the ones who will want to go home at the first opportunity.

Pick 4 is in such an awkward spot.

There's a clear drop off from JHF and Callaghan, the next level down seems quite even which makes whoever we pick there a bit of a reach.

My #1 preference is to try and move up for Callaghan, if we can't, I'd be sliding back down hopefully to 7 and 15.

I like Goater at 7 given we have spoken about speed and power. I do like the look of Rachele, but I'm just not sure he's what we need right now. Erasmus looked a bit clunky from the footage I saw, just didn't look quite as smooth as he should.

I'd then like Draper/Roberts at 15.

There's a list of draft-prospect medium forwards on the AFL website today. My concern is that it contains many of the previously touted suggestions for us. Do we not need an actual gun midfielder, i.e., someone who plays midfield, not who we hope could play midfield?
For example, Erasmus and Draper are on the list.

Perhaps, Mutineer could clarify who the real midfielders are from this year's recommendations?

It's worth remembering, a draftee is not about what they are now, it's what they project to be

Medium forward is certainly a common starting position for elite midfielders as well

Goater looks interesting for what we need. The kicking will need some work but so did Dangerfield's.

However, he has the type of tools that would fit our midfield well. I suspect that he projects as a top 10 pick as well. If we are not able to get Callaghan, then Goater would possibly be the player reasonably high up our draft order.

I still think that in terms of greatest upsides in the top 10 (not including the F/S) are JHF, Mac and Callaghan.

Goater is pretty intriguing and dynamic type that would fit nicely though.

Would you ask for 6, 8 and 19 for 4, future 1st and 33? Or not worth it?

Not worth it.

Remember we don't want to trade down. Fremantle wants to trade up in this situation.

Geez the Callaghan panic is well and truly on! I’m a bit curious though - If you take away Jack Gunston, who are the rich private school boys from Melbourne that have been drafted and left the Crows?

All of Goater, Erasmus, Draper, Callaghan etc have all been impressive when they've played midfield yet all have the versatility to play other roles when needed.

Was Bontompelli a pure mid when drafted?
Was Petracca a pure mid when drafted?
Was Dangerfield a pure mid when drafted?

I agree - not many. Watts, I guess. It is a real problem tho, and my point is that we can’t pretend it is not a risk.

Yeah look I can’t remember many. Personally I think it’s a bit of a mirage. No doubt the Crows have had a few leave but the old Melbourne school tie thing gets a bit of a bad wrap in comparison to what actually happens.

Check out the number of Sandringham Dragons/Oakleigh Chargers lads some time that have been drafted interstate that have headed back to Victoria mostly with their best footy in front of them. It's not a mirage mate.

IMO Rachele is exactly what we need right now. We just have a greater priority in bringing in top level midfield talent as that is our biggest need.

I can't see us taking Rachele with 4 and he'll be long gone by what is currently our second selection.

With pick swaps you never know though. I'd love for us to get him.

But from the Crows ?

Not only this.. the landscape has changed since the gunstan days..

players these days care little for contract terms and will ask to be traded to their club/state of choice regardless of contract status or free agency status.. they just dont care.. the days of guys like dangerfield “doing their time” and sticking it out at their club until they hit free agency and then asking for a trade are quickly coming to an end.

and all the noise coming out of the AFL and AFLPA is pointing towards the entire organisation wanting to encourage and expand player movement not restrict it..

Every chance Rachele is one of the 1st round failures that occur every year .....he has to have the capability of going mid/fwd

Definitely not a need for our list structure

I get it, but we still need to be taking the talent we think we can grow the most at the club. Plenty of recent examples of suburban Melb lads that have been drafted interstate and have stayed too, mostly because they're given the opportunity to flourish

If Callaghan did a Wingard/Perkins/Smith and specifically said ‘don’t draft me’ I’d stay away, whether that actually happens or not will come out in the media soon enough

I've lived in Bayside Melbourne for 20 years and there is definitely a lot of "Old School" influence coming from the Melbourne/Brighton/Caulfield Grammar / Scotch /Trinity / Hailey Berry - and they feed a lot of players into the Dragons/Chargers network.

Even if it's just by osmosis, they get fed the entitled "Masters of the Universe" crap at school, and it's reinforced by the coaches they have - lots of ex-AFL guys coach that network like Matthew Lloyd at Haileybury. The fact that Fish stayed says something about the environment at Adelaide now and about his character to choose to stay and fight for a spot.

If it's any consolation, some of those lads would have issues traveling to Casey for Melbourne training - "Do I have to drive through Frankston to get there?"

Why are the Crows any different to other interstate clubs.....and we're talking high end draft picks here not players taken after the 1st round.
Honestly I haven’t looked too closely at it so you’re probably right. I was asking about the Crows because I can’t think of many of those types to have left. I can really only remember Gunston.
