A good result would be if, by some miracle, Callaghan is still on the board at 4. Then we would possibly have Richmond offering 7 and 15 or Hawthorn offering 5 and 21
And we would still be taking Callaghan with our pick.

Hamish drop his pants, run a lap around the table before calling out Callaghan’s name

If Callaghan is on the board at 4, you take him. No questions asked

I’m not in the school of thought of ‘he miiight be a flight risk, stay away’. You back in your culture to keep him, go out of our way to make sure he feels at home etc
I wonder if anyone knows whether he would have a BYO future wife from Melbourne with strong family ties? (hopefully Hamish & co would) There's backing in your culture and then there's taking a package that has a constant ticking sound coming from it.

Port desperately want NWM, it's why they want to move up to 12 for 16 and Ladhams

If we split we'd be looking at Goater/ Ward at 7 and who knows a Draper or Rachelle at 15? Wouldn't mind Johnson if he slips past West Coast
Our team is full of moderate talents, mid to late first round picks

why would we want to split for more of the same? Assuming a buyer isn’t a figment of imagination, which it probably is
If we split picks with Richmond for 7 & 15 our picks below 20 would be similar if we didn't trade down.
The biggest difference is we've gone more KPP with our highest picks instead of mids yet mids win games.

Ours 2, 6, 9, 9, 11, 11, 12, 14, 14, 16, 17, 17
Melb. 2, 3, 3, 4, 9, 9, 9, 10, 12, 12, 14, 15, 18

Its Petracca and Oliver that are the stand out difference.

Melbourne's include traded in players Tomlinson, Melksham, Lever, Dustan, Brown

Hamish and the development guys don't have any excuse if we don't end up with an elite midfield

not interested. It’s about time we started to reaching for best possible not trying to be clever

do you think that if we take Erasmus or Goater or whoever at 7 instead of 4 that will somehow make them a lesser player?
If you can get the same player at the later, but don’t move done you’re forfeiting a free top 20.

I understand your point about gaining the elite, and I would give up a lot of we had a realistic chance of getting Horne, but moving down does no harm on the above scenario.

at the heart is your assumption that there is little to no difference between picks

it’s as dull as it is untrue. And if it were true no one is paying to move up

it depends how our club views the talent order, and if they know enough about the other clubs preferences.

Do you think the clubs all rank the potential draftees in the same order? That’s a weird take.

I'm also not usually in the 'flight risk' camp, but Callaghan and Ward both worry me for having very specific family ties to Victorian football clubs, and both are Vic Metro.

Edit: If Hobbs/Goater/Erasmus are still on the board at our pick i would take one, or if we can guarantee getting one of them by splitting

Wish I shared your confidence, we've lost too many players that appeared to be high character lads that obviously passed our recruiting teams analysis of the "go home" factor yet here we have a player that has obvious red flags. I pray your confidence is backed up by the lads loyalty if we do settle on him but I'm not afraid to admit I have my concerns.

Wrong. It's about moving up or down to get the player you want. And if they come at 4 or 7 or 15 it doesn't matter.
I'm sure Adelaide wouldn't have thrown everything at JHF if he wasn't local.

There's a list of draft-prospect medium forwards on the AFL website today. My concern is that it contains many of the previously touted suggestions for us. Do we not need an actual gun midfielder, i.e., someone who plays midfield, not who we hope could play midfield?
For example, Erasmus and Draper are on the list.

Perhaps, Mutineer could clarify who the real midfielders are from this year's recommendations?

I rate Ben Hobbs higher than Callaghan for pick 4 (6), Different type of players yes and Hobbs is a slower midfielder however I feel he will be a lot like a Travis Boak.
