I asked the question "Brisbane looking at trading up to get Josh Sinn or someone else?" on Ben Waterworth live chat.. his answer >

"Probably not Sinn, if they want to trade up, I reckon it's for Darcy Wilmot."
I wonder if he's mixing up two things. He's linked both Brisbane and Melbourne to Wilmot, and Brisbane and Melbourne to trading for West Coast's pick, but surely the trade would be for another player, because I can't see Essendon, Port or GWS drafting Wilmot.

So there’s no real difference between Wilmot and Answerth I thought we were on the lookout for a Daniel Rich replacement
Don't get me wrong I think he'll be a decent player, solid foot skills, good interceptor (but too small to be a full time interceptor) good defender but I agree there isn't a huge gap between he and Answerth.

I think the player on our list that Wilmot is most similar to is Madden. He seems like the run and carry we would like off half back. Won't replace Rich's kicking though but perhaps Prior or Michael might be able to

So basically he is Witherden 2.0 really, albeit he is much more faster & quicker out of the defence 50 then Witherden ever was?

And can reportedly defend. In a lot of ways, not that much like Witherden.

Interesting that Wilmot is almost a year younger than Sinn (a week or so off one year).

I got Dylan Grimes vibes watching Wilmots highlights, we could definitely use a player like that in our backline.

Funny how many are off Wilmot already for basically no reason. If he was born 1/2 hour later he could play TAC again next year, would most likely smash it after getting bigger and stronger and possibly go top ten.
It's not necessarily getting Wilmot, I think most would be happy with him at 18. The idea of trading up for him when others could be available is whats turning people off. Also I think he'd stay around the same mark if he was eligible for next year, looking like a very good draft early on.

I like Wilmot at pick 20 and would not expect him to get a senior game till later in 2022 or early 2023
He just scraped into draft by 1 day being born on New Years Eve
Only 183cm and 76kg so may add some height and will add some bulk in the next 12 months
Possibly a Daniel Rich type but a better mark. Not many are a better kick than Daniel
I can see him slotting into other roles once he settles into the AFL system

Unlikely he adds height as boys usually stop growing around 16-17 but he could def add some bulk

I like Chesser, but I'd be disappointed if we didn't pick Johnson if he's available at 16, and even more disappointed if we passed on him at 20 for Motlop. I don't think it's sensible drafting based on where we're weak in our VFL team, because we should be drafting for our AFL team, at least in the first round. At 41 we can get a player like Ronald Fejo Jr who is almost as good as Motlop, but there's no chance of finding anyone nearly as good as Johnson in midfield there.

We draft for talent and trade for need. Talents like Johnson aren't available at our picks often these days. We could equally trade for a small forward. That's how we got Cameron and McCarthy after all.

Great point here mate

I actually think he is better than Motlop currently but the difference is media hype and exposure because of his last name

He’s no where near a Daniel Rich prospective he’s kicking is speculative for a defender and apparently uses run but he’s often caught a lot he gets caught 3 times in he’s highlights package alone

You can tell the kid's special, elite at intercept marks, nice kick with some speed. The one thing that stands out is his composure is next level, never looks like making a mistake ! but I really hope with try and sneak up our picks for Josh Sinn !

1 full year of getting bigger, stronger fitter and smarter can make a massive difference. I can’t see how he could not move up the rankings- he has to be a better player next year. IMO of course, who knows could have stints on ball next year and add a whole lot of value.

It's obviously hard to predict but if he stayed at half-back then I don't see him moving up the ranking a whole lot, he could get better at everything he already does well now but it still doesn't really raise his ceiling beyond a good half-back. I agree with what your saying, just prefer some higher upside options at 14.

Was told last night that Essendon possibly have interest in Wilmot.

At this stage there’s a lot of rumours as clubs try and put b.s. out there, to try assure their favoured player/s gets to their first pick/s.
I know you're a fan of the NBA and it all reminds me of how OKC convinced everyone they were they were taking Bouknight to avoid anyone trading above them to get Giddey.

Those wanting a Rich replacement- you maybe waiting FOREVER as he is one of the best field kicks to ever play the game.
When people talk about replacing a player, they mean structurally. We're not looking for a carbon copy of Rich, just someone with good kicking and defensive skills who can play the same role in the team.

Agree, someone like Sinn doesn't have the kicking skill that Rich has however he could be just as good a rebounder in a different way using his speed.

Am i missing something.... from what i see Wilmot looks good enough for me. Not every player needs to have an X factor - we have quite a few of them. He reads the ball well in the air, attacks it like he wants it and doesn't seem to be rushed or panicked If we pick him - I will start the bandwagon :)

I did say possibly and any replacement does not necessarily have to have the same qualities as someone they replace.
Alex Rance goes down and is replaced. Richmond still go on to win the premiership
I also mentioned other roles once he settles into an AFL system
I don't think he gets early games unless he goes to a bottom 6 side
A bit of a stretch to say he got caught 3 times in his highlight video

Yep a lot of mind games and BS out there. Wouldn't be surprised if we weren't that keen on Wilmot. Unless someone is leaking out info unofficially
