It was the easiest solution to the ‘problem’ that was also the worst solution because it contradicts the whole point of the thing - which is to incentivise clubs to spend resources to help talented kids from remote communities or different cultural backgrounds make the translation to a professional environment (ie Josh Simpson) or just to choose footy over other sports.

Now clubs have close to zero incentive. Sensible solutions:
- Be stricter with the kids in the academy’s (lol at sons of AFL player being allowed in academy’s and kids who have lived in Aus and played footy their whole life)
- Remove discounts
- Maximum of two picks can be used to match a bid
- Top 8 clubs can’t match top 10 bids

I truly hate the idiots running the AFL sometimes
Best option: let every club have an Academy and make them operate under the same draft/selection rules. Tell clubs that they can set up their academy in any region they like -- so long as they play 2/3 of their home games there and have their permanent Admin office there.

You would have a Tassie team and probably north Australian team within a couple of years.

We have a first round pick next year, then nothing. I want us to take that first round to the draft.

There's good reason to be bullish about the first round prospects next year in terms of quality and list fit. Neale chasing a retirement package has far less appeal. Game time to Erasmus, Johnson and O'Driscoll is a much better investment to our on ball options.
I do agree that we take it to the draft however we do have 2023 picks to trade aswell

Neale is a fantastic player, but how our list is developing I am not sure I see him as a difference maker in the same way as a lethal small forward may be, or someone like Jackson. My expectation is that we would need to shunt someone already pushing into our best 22 sideways for Neale. And I don't want to end up in a similar situation to how Geelong did with Clark when they brought in Smith.

Have to agree, I wanted Neale at a discounted price at the end of next year, but it will be hard to stomach watching him walk back in and take a young fellas spot who hasn't done anything wrong. That sounds like something the old Freo would have done.

We have Serong, don’t need Neale. 3rd rounder or he can stay in Queensland while his wife comes back to WA. Kind of feel we have some leverage here.

They have 2 father sons coming through apparently ashcroft is potential pick 1. May be a 2023 first round for a 2022 first round pick and throw in Neale.
