Hey Blues,
I come in peace.

I have a question I'd like to see the Blues fans reaction to.

Ignoring questions of likelihood/logistics etc, would you consider a trade for the #1 overall pick in this years draft a roughly fair trade price for Harry McKay?

Thanks <3

0 chance, arguably the best young key forward in the comp just coming into his prime and just signed an extension, you're not trading him for the chance to draft someone who might be as good as him in a few years time.

Would have to be for multiple first round picks, not just pick 1.

We learnt giving up one Josh Kennedy how that can bite you on the clacker. Considering he's leading the Coleman, our consistent injuries to our other forwards, and if he cleans up the sideshow aspects to his game, he'll be dangerous for another 150+ games (injury free - but his body is developing nicely from the rake he was). Considering the list is expecting to be finals bound in 22, we wouldn't do it (and it's complete unders anway for his value).

I might consider giving you McGovern + Casboult for #1.

I mean, Chris Judd was a pretty good get for your mob... :D

But I absolutely take your broader points.

I think the real question is what would it take to get Ben Mackay across?

Cerra would be a great fit for our midfield. If we could trade SPS and something else for him whilst retaining our first pick then that would be a win win situation
Brave move??? Trade Charlie & SPS for Cerra and their 2nd round pick...
Let the howls of indignation begin. Deep deep down many of you know I am correct...

Wouldn't be trading Charlie....
Ok... here we go.
Has not played in 2+ years. If and when he does come back he will be a shadow of his former self. One knock to that knee could end his career.
We put DEK to CHF, he will be a sensation. He moves well, strong mark absolute champion in the making.

Not one of your smarter posts.

I’m not convinced we have such solid gold midfield stocks, certainly not in the areas where Cerra excels, and certainly not to the depth of the top sides.

I am vastly more bullish on the likes of Dow, Kennedy etc. after the last couple of weeks (Dow especially, it looks like the penny has dropped) but let’s not pretend we have oodles of proven quality outside of Cripps and Walsh.

There’s talent but with unrealised talent comes variability. Let’s say we pick someone great with pick 5-10, and all goes well and within 3-4 years they have the tank/conditioning/experience to be a legit contributor as they enter their prime. Guess what - we just described Cerra, without any variability because we know what his floor and likely trajectory is. I am not sure why he’s being underrated - his first half was brilliant and he’s shown signs all year.

We need an elite rotation running through the midfield and right now we bat very shallow. You throw a ready made player in Cerra who is on the cusp of his prime, with a perfect mix of skills that we require (size, composure, delivery inside 50) and our midfield ascends immediately - in turn helping capitalise on the quality bookends we have up forward & down back. There are things he needs to improve to become an A grader but geez he is on track. For us to win a flag we’ll need more genuine midfield talent than we currently have.

Again I agree on the cost issue. My gut tells me Freo will not be kind at the trade table and we may have to walk away. But I’d absolutely give our first + second (hate giving away a large chunk of draft capital but for a 21yo #5 draft pick who has played 70 games and looked every bit a future gun, it’s worth it) and pay him 600-700k a year.

I actually feel based on what we’ve heard the salary might be OK but Freo will almost certainly demand 2 x 1sts or the equivalent of. That’s probably where we walk away and in all likelihood the deal doesn’t get done, making all this speculation academic...so maybe we should all just jump across to the Phantom Drafts board and figure out who we’re getting.

Cerra is not hopeless, but he is hardly going to be the difference for us.. My question is would you rather give up pick 5 and probably a future 2nd and 5 years at $750-800k for Cerra... Or give up nothing and 4 years at $800k for Josh Kelly..

Dow kicked a goal, had an assist, and 5 other score involvements. Cerra kicked 2 points and had 1 other score involvement. And we won.
Big difference in fanfare.

Carra was pick 5, and has shown to be a good pick, so he's going to cost more than our 1st.

I more meant, he didn't seem to have a great game, yet had the ball 24 times, we will see if he leaves, what the trade is. What past trade history are you basing Cerra being worth more than a first (top 8 pick)?

Prestia was traded to the Tigers for what ended up being a pick around 10, Prestia had more runs on the board, Mitchell was traded for pick 14, Saad with three top 3 B&F finishes was traded for 8 with change.

It's not that he would be on 800. But if we were to pay him 650-700, that means we can't pick somebody else, who we may prefer. That's the point to the exercise.

And I'm not so interested in who is out of contract, it's about is Cerra the right player for us at the right cost for the long-term?

If the contract is for $650,000 and all we have to give up is our 1st (currently 6), which i think is enough, then i think he's the right type of player and he is a long term player, if we had to give up more and pay more, then it would be a no.

I have no problems giving up first round picks, i see Cerra as having a better career than 3/4 of our last 15 first rounders, its a pretty safe trade imo.
