He sounds exactly like a FIGJAM.
He had a chance to tone it down a little but instead choose to suggest that the only reason he might not be Pick 1 was if he wasn’t a good fit for the club.

“Whether I think I’m the best right now, I would probably say yes as well. But look at the end of the day, it‘s what clubs need and I might not be the best fit for a club.”
A lot of NBA draftees do this as well.

Chet Holmgren in his draft interview was asked who he thinks is the best NBA player, he responded "myself in two months"

Players are almost encouraged to sell themselves in this process. Crazy confidence or naivety.

Umm guys….this is a little concerning?

In perhaps a sign the self-belief and confidence of overseas athletes is beginning to influence Australia’s emerging footballers, Phillipou was one of several prospects spoken to by foxfooty.com.au that indicated he’d take himself with the first selection.

“I think I‘d have to say myself, just because I think if you’re not going to back yourself, you probably don’t have the confidence required to play in the league,” he said.

“Whether I think I’m the best right now, I would probably say yes as well. But look at the end of the day, it‘s what clubs need and I might not be the best fit for a club. But if I had Pick 1, I’d definitely be taking myself.”
Where do you think you will be selected?

"Yeah-nah, all credit to the boys really. It's tough to get drafted but I have to thank all the fellas who got selected behind me. There's no 1 in TEAM. Just happy to get the 4 points..."

Young guys tend to be more into American sports.

Over there with young draftable talent, it's considered a red flag if you don't say you're the best thing to ever happen to your sport if you get asked. Leads to some outlandish statements but it avoids criticism that you might not be mentally tough and confident enough to be 'that guy' in big moments.

I think that'll start to bleed through to young Aussie sportsmen, which should annoy the humility-at-all-costs approach of more 'senior' Australians.

...that reminds me when Lance Franklin was interviewed by clubs and was asked the question who do you most play like. He answered Lance Franklin. Most recruiters thought this as arrogant.

Jack Viney was asked to write his top 5 on a whiteboard in our interview. Put himself at 1, ahead of Whitfield.
G Wright loved it.

Yeah this is very true, In American sports these days it is almost seen as the only correct way to answer that sort of question, can definitely see it becoming more common in the AFL soon

It’s sad that clubs think that is an informative question. It’s the type of shit the media ask for shits and giggles. I wouldn’t take it seriously either!

And for the record, buddy was right 😂

Just on Tsata - from AFL website :
Afoot fracture sidelined Tsatas for the under-18 carnival, which was a shame given his hot start to the season at NAB League level. Tsatas is the midfielder with the combination of qualities in this year's draft class: he can run (quick and long), he's taller and able to go inside and outside. His first month of the season for Oakleigh showed all of those traits, when he averaged 33 disposals for the Chargers in a series of dominant games. An exciting talent who is set for a return to the field soon.

Some have rightly scrutinized his Combine results as being a bit disappointing. I guess a foot fracture stops you in your tracks.

Americans feed off that stuff though. It comes out in games though where all the players want to the the “star” and not the team thing like defend (looking at you NBA) or an entire sport built for one player (QB in NFL)

AFL is a lot more team orientated. 18 players out on the field each doing their bit.

Also this is just me, but if you are the best you won’t need to tell anyone as you will let your footy do the talking. It comes off as insecurity attempting to be covered by arrogance.

Reads more like he's going in with a ton of confidence in his ability and just worded it poorly. It's not a FIGJAM sorta comment to make, he's got the confidence that he'll become the best player in the draft. I'd rather that than a timid, reserved player who doesn't have that internal drive to see themselves as the best in the league.
I agree.
It's not like this kid is someone projected to go late in the draft. Many people on here want him with our pick. Nothing wrong with confidence in your own ability.

Not sure that bignoting yourself has anything to do with internal drive. Sounds a little easily pleased if anything. But time will tell I guess whether he’s a Tomic or a Federer.
Fixed that for you.

Would much rather a Roger than Djokovic!

Chet is a fantastic case of how this can backfire given he's going to be redshirt the entire year.

Perfectly acceptable answer.
Some of you guys are easily triggered by confidence.
Maybe check your insecurities.

Given his youth relative to this draft cohort, I'd say he is a very likely prospect to become the best player from this draft.
I hope we pick him.
