Did anyone else notice that GCS only took one pick at the National Draft? I thought teams had to take a minimum of 2 x picks and upgrade a rookie to make 3 new additions to their main lists?

I noticed that, i had Gold Coast in the draft phantom game.
Very boring team for me to have.
( Nailed their first pick , had Shadowbrain for their second pick , but they traded it out ).

Gold Coast can do what they want i guess.
I wish our team was so flush with talent we could give away first round picks with players and not take any others.

Ethan Phillips would be perfect. I can't believe that nobody picked him, he just won the best player in the VFL award and watching him play he looked easily as good as Sam Collins. Sandringham pretty much played Ethan Phillips when we played them. He's the best interceptor I've seen outside the AFL. Looks like he has that Stewart/May type of read of the ball.
Yeah agree it's a little odd no one picked him up, and again I still think it was a little odd that we signed Cordy when we already have a few similarly sized defenders. The only knock I've read about Ethan is his lack of closing speed, I just wonder whether teams are looking too much into what he can't do as opposed to what he can. He's a big fella after all. Anyway he's probably a lock for the SSP or the MSD once a team has an injury to a KPD so I reckon we still may see him at the top level next year.

That was the knock on Sam Collins too..look at how he’s turned out!

Key defenders we had:
Howard and Battle.

Then we had Oscar Adams.

That was it.
Saints 190 and over.

Heath 204cm, 93Kg, Ruck
King 202cm, 94Kg , Forward
Marshall 201cm, 105Kg. Ruck
Campbell 201cm 105Kg. Ruck
Howard 199cm , 94Kg Key Defender
Keeler 198cm, 89Kg Ruck/Fwd
Van Es 197cm , 99Kg. Key Defender
Adams 197cm, 83Kg Key Defender
Cordy 195cm, 92Kg. Key Defender
Allison 195cm, 87Kg, Not sure if he's anything.
Hayes 194cm, 92Kg. Ruck/Fwd
Battle 193cm , 92Kg. Key Defender.
Sharman 193cm, 86Kg. Ummm he's been played as a defender ....but....
Highmore 193cm , 86Kg. Intercepting defender, not really suitable for playing on talls.
Wood 192cm , 85Kg. Forward/Wing
Coffield 191cm ,88Kg Rebounding defender, is NOT a key defender.
Wilkie 191cm , 87Kg. Can play key defender remarkably well for his size, but its not his best role.
Owens 191 cm , 85Kg , Midfielder

Departed : Lionert 195cm 89kg. NOT a key defender.
Departed : Joyce 194cm, 95Kg. Key Defender.

I see Cordy as a replacement for Joyce, and acknowledgement that Adams is not yet considered to be effective at AFL level.
Van Es is a good size, but in October you can't sit back and say "we will draft an 18YO key defender and he'll come straight in and be effective ".

All in all , we seem to have a pretty good list of talls to move forward with.

According to that list, Van Es is the heaviest guy on the list after Marshall and Campbell. Very big dude.

Reckon BJ might get a bit miffed with that scenario!!
He played over a hundred games for us in the #18
He also played over 100 games for the Bummers wearing #9, wonder if he’s miffed that Jack Steele wears #9 for us?
Or in Essendons case Dylan Shiel …. hmm! Yeah in their case maybe. 🥴

minimum of 3 and they did 3.

1 in the main draft and 2 in the rookie draft.

knowing our luck for father sons, BJ's future son will want to go to Essendon

We’re finally valuing key defenders, unfortunately it took an injury to Howard to make us realize that they’re kind of important. We had no clue what to do without him.

Yeah you're right, we were short on key defenders, I guess I just don't see Cordy as a key defender. 🤔

I honestly think Moose will become a player but I'd be very surprised if it was in 2023.
Same but I believe he’ll get at least a couple games and not disgrace himself. Vfl fill in level does a role. Won’t be a key player in his own right til at least 2024 but I can see him doing no worse than any other ruckforwars fill in for a couple games

Fair enough, but if he's not , he's nothing else.
Replacement spud for Joyce a better description?

He's a mobile third tall defender who isn't very mobile. Like a shit Wilkie or Battle. I really don't get why we went after him, I hope I'm wrong but he looks exactly like what we had too many of already. Probably originally thought we'd push Battle forward but that limits Sharman or Hayes ability to get a run. Both could have played back if we wanted them in the side. I think it looks like Ratts planning.

To me Ethan Phillips had more upside and is surely good enough as a backup defender.
We could have gone into the draft hoping to get Phillips as a rookie or late pick ( we could have as it turns out ), and still got Cordy during the supplementary period if we missed out on Phillips.

I think Cordy and JVE battle for the FB, lockdown role. This frees Howard to CHB (a MUCH better use for him) and then Battle released as the interceptor.
