Autopsy 2022 Grand Final

I'm still trying to figure out why we couldn't just do some tempo footy like we did against Fremantle. When it looked like they were running away with it just get momentum back with our passing game. Played exactly into Geelong's hands with the stupid panicked chaos footy.
Half way through the 1st quarter we were only down 13-6 after Hayward scores. But then we concede 3 goals in 3 minutes. First 2 were from centre bounce clearances then another from Issac Smith running onto a handball.

At the start of the 3rd quarter we again concede 3 goals in 3 minutes. Holding the ball free kick in front of goal. Then a switch across goal being intercepted. Then Issac Smith kicking a 50m goal from a boundary throw in.

Just gonna be positive.

1. Robbie Fox - I said it a few weeks ago, but it's time this guy is rid of the "unsung hero" label and gets the "gun" label that he deserves. He was moving through traffic and playing with an intensity befitting of the opposition team. Just looked too good for literally everyone near him all game, either teammate or opponent. Felt so sorry for him that he (and his fellow defenders) were under the pump all game but got so little relief. Just constant pressure and he withstood it the best out of them all. What an inspiration he should serve as to so many players in the league.

2. James Rowbottom - Death, taxes, and this kid leaving it all out on the park for this team. He'd had an incredible run really if you think about the two months leading into the GF, but this game was the one where he finally looked like the boy amongst men that he is. He couldn't get his natural hustling and bustling contested game going against the Cats, but I think that's what made his game all the more impressive. He just showed courage, ticker and maturity to refuse to have a poor showing when it would've been so easy to just be another kid struggling on the biggest stage. Actually got a bit emotional seeing him taking all those hits today and then just getting on with it. Unbelievable kid really.

3. Chad Warner - I do think there's a slight issue with the way he fits in our midfield, in that I think there needs to be a stronger correlation between Warner's best and the team's best. They haven't quite synced up yet, which is understandable. But it's simply impossible to not fawn over Warner when he just does not look the part of the kid that he is. In everything but pure experience, he is in his prime and ready to dominate. I felt so sorry for him seeing his emotions post-game knowing how hard he'd worked for us. It was both great and devastating to see, but it was Warner in a nutshell: heart on sleeve, unabashed competitiveness.

Proud of this club and we will be OK.

The expectations on sheldrick are already too high. He wasn’t a top ten pick - he’s not tall and not wide bodied. He may be a low centre of gravity type but I doubt he will be Josh Kennedy

If he develops into an inside mid in 2-3 years as a dominant inside mid that’s be amazing but let’s just wait and see

If Parker and mills can’t compete on the inside that’s where we are
Gould!

Yep, felt the same. After 5-10 minutes I was already getting 2014 vibes the way the game was panning out. They were slipping tackles, getting luck of the bounce etc. Had a feeling it was going to get ugly, but not 81 points ugly.

We should have played Gould? Lol, what are you smoking mate? The only mistake was playing Reid in my opinion and I don't think any changes would have made a difference - Geelong were just simply better all day, man to man.
McInerney was playing injured too.

There were eerily the same signs in the Fremantle game, they just couldn’t score in the 1st quarter. Lock the first quarter down and start again, which is what we did. Then slowly climb our way back into the game. We slowed the game down possessing the footy.

Somehow we just didnt do that. Just got in our shells. Credit to the Cats though, we must have been prevented from doing that.

Woke up this morning and discovered the world is still turning. We had a brilliant year, but it is pretty clear that it takes a lot to defeat the big Victorian clubs. The way we approach this off season will be very interesting.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but a loss like today's has the potential to set you back a good 3 or 4 years- aside from Warner your mids were completely impotent. Review the game hard + don't cut any corners- own the performance and learn from it. You're far too talented to just brush this one off as an anomaly...
It’s our third Grand Finals loss, we are hardly going to write it off as an anomaly. For mine, there is only one consistent factor in all 3 losses, and I wonder if he is able to learn from it this time around.

Still pretty pissed off at the game we played tbh, what a self inflicted wound the Reid decision was. Then they decide to overcomplicate it by selecting a player that has not played seniors since Round 8.

I am also sad at the last senior game JPK played, the match committee desperately tried to hold onto him (unlike ROK) but his time was pretty much done. We tried a lot of the players out the first half of the season before settling on a team.

But… the way we played we could have selected anyone and we still get beaten tbh. Heck the Cats won 17 straight for a reason. You look at the oppositions post game thread and one common word is outclassed. It wasn’t in our forward line enough to make our forward lockdown gameplan work, which was crucial to our win streak. We couldn’t get anything from halfback, and we couldn’t win it out of the centre.

If we bounce back immediately in 2023 it would be a small miracle. Might be a year of enlightment of where the list is at. Things might get worse before they get better.

I said before the game that half of footy is played between the ears and this game was proof of it. Dropping McDonald for McLean was a major error on Longmire's part. It was an unnecessary, self-inflicted blow to team morale. The majority here felt flat after the team announcement, imagine how his mates felt. It's just not a feeling you want to take into a Grand Final. It also conceded we were preparing to play the game on Geelong's terms before the ball was even bounced.

But that selection wasn't why we lost and full credit to Geelong, that was one of the most brutal and systematic demolitions of a footy side I've seen. They're a great side who had a terrific year and more than deserve their flag.

I think our club and players are strong enough to not be broken by this. The reason it hurts is because we know we're better than what happened yesterday. We need to step back and take a holistic view of the season and our age profile and recognize that sometimes the risk of getting out over your skis is that you end up crashing. This was a big one. But we'll be back.

Getting sick of reading so much about Reid. We lost the game at stoppages. 2 Hawkins goals. That was just weird.

They were mighty in the clearances. If we’re going to point fingers, point them squarely at the bloke who made himself unavailable to replace the injured Reid. Neither McDonald nor Amartey were going to change that result. A proper second ruck might have helped.

The sun, unbelievably, came up this morning. The reality is that we were boys playing against men. That the boys made it so far speaks volumes.

The challenge now is how to properly absorb what we’ve learned.

Feeling absolutely shattered this morning, really bloody sad.

So disappointed for the players, the entire club and for all of our members and die-hards.

The game...what can I say?
Our blokes were overwhelmed, overawed and outplayed in every aspect.
The Reid selection was obviously as stupid as it gets, anyone who has half a clue about GFs knows not to take in half cooked blokes. To take Reid in like that was ridiculous as he relies on his athleticism to impact games.
McLean, McDonald or Amartey it doesn't really matter in the scheme of things it's a bit of a non issue. Without knowing what the lead up to the game looked like it is harsh to lay much more blame on the coaching.
The players let themselves and everyone else down, they lost the game between their ears - as simple as that for mine.
It hurts like hell and I hope they have the mental fortitude to move on from it and not let it happen again. The psychological part of the game was really the only doubt alot of us had going in... "if they show up", we'll they didn't and the Cats certainly did.

Credit where credit is due, wonderful season but we came up against a superior team yesterday. The cats were brilliant.

Might take a while to move on and find optimism for next year but the time will come.

Hope your all feeling okay.

Hey Swannies fans, just wanted to pay my respects to your club - no doubt everyone here is very disappointed with the result, but you support a professional, well-run club with a ton of of upside moving forward.

So many good young players who will learn from this and push the club to greater heights.

Showed a lot of class in defeat too; expected nothing less.

Chin up, like Geelong and Collingwood supporters you Swans fans know what it's like to put it all on the line emotionally only to come up short - it only makes those rare, precious breakthrough Premierships all the more sweet. Your time is coming.

Just early before any goals all our play was nervy and rushed, resembled nothing we normally do. We just wanted the boundary a lot. Fox was the only one settled early.

Tackles clearly dont have to be effective to count, parkers numbers are ok, but he wasnt anywhere to be found in anything that mattered today, as skippee and one of , if not our best mids. Failed again on the biggest stage imo. Wasn't terrible , but JPK stood up where Parker can't hit the level, just my opinion. He seems to escape criticism or get excuses made.

Mills and Rampe both crap too, thanks captains

Laughing stock of the league right now

we sucked, but unfortunately you shit the bed gf day and sonehow fans of absolute shitshow clubs think they can take solace in it

Longmire put Clarke on Stewart, did he listen to the stupid media for *'s sake, when Wil did the job on him in round 2. Clarke, as much as he tried hard, was giving away 12cm for *'s sake. Who believed that was a good idea?
Clarke did a solid job on Stewart though…

16 disposals (Ave 23, rd 2 18)
5 marks (Ave 7, rd 2 5)
3 r50 (Ave 6, rd 2 10)
81% disposal efficiency (Ave 85%, rd 2 94%)

Hard to argue Hayward did a better job in Rd2.

I’m saying that though, hard to rebound out of 50 when the ball doesn’t go in there.
