He looked so much more composed on the weekend.
Competed really well in the air but it was his groundball game that stood out for me.
Didn't panic , gave off quality handballs to guys who were clear and was willing to run into spaces before giving it off - rare for a Geelong tall back to look so agile and creative
Getting way ahead of myself, of course. But I think you can already see fantastic signs with SDK that indicate he is very likely to make it in the long term. Tall enough, (getting) strong enough, athleticism in spades, reads the game well, and is clearly prepared to back himself rather than simply play conservatively. Also genuinely knows how to mark the footy when the opportunity presents itself, rather than just always nullifying and looking to punch it clear.

Would love to see him chalk up 20+ senior games this year if the body holds up. KPD for us for the next 10 years (as a minimum), I figure.

Only need to look at his brother and how well he has progressed to get an insight to how our De Koning will develop.
Just like Geelong's Henry, the one at Collingwood is starting to become a future champion before our very eyes.

I think SDK is better than TDK at the same stage of his career - and I love TDK and have always rated him as a player. You've got a player there.

Miers and ceglar to play vfl this week. Managed minutes though.

How unlike us to bring in a mature ruck that is injury affected at the start of the season...lets hope he can offer more like Hmac ever did. Miers is an interesting one..he may have to add something to his game to be the auto selection he has been. Stengle looks a more rounded player.

Any idea on the time for the VFL game?

Geezus, that's a big call for someone who hasn't even completed 2 games yet.
Wow I thought he'd played more! I watched the early stages of the weekends match and really think he looked a lot more mature than TDK. I didn't realise he was 21 either, I thought we has like, 19. I stand corrected, but either way he looks great!

I may be becoming a touch bias to Geelong though as I've just moved down to Torquay so naturally I'm going to have a vested interest in the Cats.

i will roll with that "gamble" of a call as well. He will be a future AA key defender.

Has immense talent, good kick, great game awareness, quality intercept skills, reads the play well in the air and has good closing speed and arm length to defend when out positioned or behind on a lead.

He is also a prodigy modern day Key defender for sheer size that will be the perfect match up for the new generation of 200+cm key forwards like the king brothers Thillthorpe and young sam darcy recently drafted.

Will be a extremely good KPD and one i would be lining up to sign long term asap if i had the reigns.

thats my early call that i am happy to put my chips on.

Happy to bookmark that and remind you of your talent identification skills

sure go for it. I have gotten some right and some wrong in the past.

I had billie smedts bookmarked for a top career, that one went pear shaped.
I am agreeing about SDK

That is no big call some of us said that when we drafted him

Six players on the Cats injury list published on afl.com.au this week. And five of them are listed with the timeline 'TBC'.

Never change, Geelong.

They're absolutely having a laugh now. To suggest that they have no real idea on the return dates for over 80% of the players on the injury list is just a farce. Two or three out of six? Maybe. Five out of six? Just pronounce that they've all gone 'full Cowan' rather than feed the general public that tripe, please.

I get that the timeframes might be quite uncertain. So put down worst-case scenarios and then work back from there. We have photographic evidence that some of these players have been out on the track in recent sessions. So it's not completely impossible to project where they might be up to in their recovery, given they're completing at least some elements of their active rehab already.

As usual, though, the club treats this area with incredible disdain, leaving some of us here longing for the halcyon days of Balmey's '1-2 weeks'. At least, that was funny at the time. For a while, anyway.

Meh to the AFLs injury list update - it's a basic update so that the AFL can have something to release from every club; what's on our website is a lot more detailed in regards to what's actually happening with the players

This is from the AFL website:

Early prognosis

Irishman Mark O'Connor is available for senior selection after returning from a knee issue in the VFL on the weekend. Sam de Koning will also be out of concussion protocols by the time the Cats face the Magpies on Saturday night. Shaun Higgins was rested last weekend and is expected to return. While new recruit Jon Ceglar made a return from knee surgery in the VFL against Essendon, the Cats held back Menegola for another week. Rohan is continuing to build his running up after dealing with sciatica issues in his back and hip over the past couple of months. - Josh Gabelich

This is from our recently released injury update:
A TRIO of Cats have made successful VFL returns as the health of Geelong's list takes yet another step in the right direction.

Mark Oā€™Connor (knee), Gryan Miers (ankle) and off-season recruit Jonathon Ceglar (knee) all emerged from the Bendigo Bank Catsā€™ Round 1 clash with Essendon unscathed.

ā€œOur medical and conditioning team have done an excellent job in successfully returning several players through our VFL program,ā€ GM of Football Simon Lloyd says.

ā€œOā€™Connor and Miers played the full game while Ceglar completed his required kilometres and will be assessed as to increasing his loads this week.ā€

Thereā€™s more good news on the injury front with the versatile Mark Blicavs not expected to miss any football after being subbed out of the weekendā€™s clash with Sydney with a shoulder issue.

ā€œWe expect Mark to be fine for this weekendā€™s game. Heā€™s recovered well,ā€ Lloyd says.

Sam De Koning will also be available for selection after completing the AFLā€™s concussion protocols.

The hard-running Sam Menegola is the next cab off the rank to make his VFL return after off-season knee surgery.

ā€œSam Menegola will play VFL this weekend which is great news,ā€ Lloyd says.

Gary Rohan has returned to the main group after dealing with back and hip sciatica.

ā€œGary Rohan has now commenced team training and will build his workloads and base over the coming weeks,ā€ Lloyd says.

First year trio Flynn Kroeger (hip), Toby Conway (hip) and James Willis (knee) are all continuing to work through their specific programs, while Sam Simpson continues to make steady improvements in his concussion recovery.

ā€œFlynn Kroeger and Toby Conway are currently working through their reconditioning program,ā€ Lloyd says.

ā€œJames Willis is beginning to run again after his knee procedure.

ā€œSam Simpson is progressing well and building his training loads.ā€

What training loads does Simpson need if his issue was simply concussion?

Seems like he hasnā€™t been training for a while, maybe a month? That might be a fair estimate of how much catching up he has to do.
