If we’re not scrambling to make the cap floor we’re doing something wrong with this list.
I've seen no evidence historically that we manage the cap well and make room

Has felt as though we must overpay mid tier players who are internally valued but not highly valued on the open market

However landing Dawson and now Rankine in consecutive seasons are perhaps signs that we're beginning to manage the cap more aggressively/shrewdly. And not losing valued players to do it

I think you missed this paragraph, in the article you linked:
They will, however, be able to shift players on the senior list to the rookie list in the time between the national and rookie drafts if the player is contracted for 2022.
And I think that was in reference to players at the time the article was written (who have a contract for 2022) - ie. back in 2021 for the 2021 draft.
Actually, I may be getting confused by the rule reversion regarding how many picks clubs can take into the draft (REF).

Ok, I'll backtrack and assume players can move from senior to rookie in one step from here on until we see anything otherwise. :$

So we could actually use our three picks if someone falls. Then after draft downgrade 2 players. Eg Seedsman and Gollant. Then upgrade Strachan and Butts. Gives us a rookie list of Seedsman, Gollant, Murray, Parnell. Cat b of Borlase and newchurch.

gollant not getting downgraded

i still think mcpherson has a delisting ahead of him and pay out

We’ll have a top 10 pick next year ……. highly doubt we’ll trade that pick

What “gap” would we trade to fill ?

Every chance we trade that pick. Clubs rebuilding hit 3-4 drafts hard and then start to trade in talent - refer Carlton, Brisbane and Melbourne examples

We have hit the draft hard the last 4 - regardless of whether we rate the talent on BF - and Kelly was clear we are done focusing on the draft. So possibly we will use next years pick but IMO it is more likely we trade out for either

KPD - if Murray or Butts don’t continue to progress

Linebreaking wing/hb- we don’t have one at the moment but possibly Milera, Hamill or Jones could fill this role

No 1 Midfielder - can only think Hollands as a target

Our “squad” will is complete - we now need to fill it out to compete

Yes... we're operating under the assumption that the 2022 rules will be the same as they were in 2021 (which were different to 2020) - in the absence of any AFL announcements to the contrary.

i.e. Clubs will be able to move players from the senior list, to the rookie list, provided they are contracted for 2023.

A couple of hypotheticals.

Our 2023 first can get you Tarryn Thomas next yr in a trade vs Phillipou this yr in draft.

Or, you get neither of those but use 2023 and 2024 firsts and get Hollands.

Which do you prefer?

2 likely picks inside the 1st 10 for a player that as yet hasn't proven a whole lot at AFL level seems like a case of getting the cart ahead of the horse just a tad?
That's without even factoring in the fact that player has already done an ACL. Contracted to 2024.

Phillipou

There's something off about Tarryn Thomas. I thought he'd be a star by now but it just hasn't happened. It can't all be North Melbourne's stinkiness. Does he have the work ethic?

Has the club said a word about Seedsman?
I think we'll hear more dialogue just B4 the Draft and PS starts .....if Seedsman can't start PS, there's really no chance of furthering his career

didn't someone say its about an off-field role

probably craig vozzo in some capacity - hardly going to shift the dial

The off-field role discussion in the rumours thread is separate to possible list spot openings .....potential additional Draftee's outside of MM

There was a report he rejoined the group in a running capacity in August I think.
That's positive.
I know next to nothing about the ability to come back after such a long lay off with concussion related issues, but surely he never plays again given how long recovery is taking him (or even if recovery is possible from such issues).

Honestly I think it's hard to speculate.
He may have been fine for a period of time now and they wanted to give him a few months off to make sure.

Or it could be over.

I can understand the want to continue playing footy. I highly doubt they'll ever be paid that well ever again.

IMO, it's not worth the risk. Just one more unlucky hit and his quality of life would be down the drain. He's still got another good 50-60 years ahead of him.

Welcome Shane Edwards!!
