The trade itself is fine - good even.

Our list management is horrendous though.
Reid's trading record is a mixed bag. I'm more concerned decisions like Sloane getting 5 years, ROB getting 4 years and players we don't rate hanging around too long. It's not good being tight for list spots when we suck.

I wonder what happens if MM falls very low because of F/S and no-one bids on him. Do we take someone else and let him go to rookie draft.
Not happening, he was a 2022 U18's All Australian after the National Carnival for a reason...Of course it would be a great outcome but AFL clubs in the main are smarter than that.

Maybe we even planned for more players to be out of contract in a stronger draft year?

Could the club be thinking and planning ahead more than BigFooty posters?

Crazy thoughts perhaps. But other clubs appear to be looking towards next year's draft more than this one. And maybe the club identified what might be available around 5 as being a flight risk. Hence happy to trade it for Rankine.

Next year is a massive one for the club as we will need to make (possibly) some tough calls on players coming out of contract whilst we still have access to the (relative) top end of the draft.

This is what absolutely sh1ts me about clubs like the Cats getting gifted pick 7 and other trades because they just don't have currency to get them done (hey for Bruhn that's all we have left). That, and the Tigers picking up Hopper and Taranto for unders because that's all they have in picks....

Of course the AFL media say that this such astute trading and brilliant by these clubs. "That's why they are great, they do this so well" LOL. They have a massive advantage.

This is the AFL conundrum. It's all a farce. Rankine was only worth pick 5 because we had pick 5. If we were Richmond or Gelong we'd just give the Suns whatever first rounder we have. The clubs which finish lower get better draft picks (the equalisation theory), but the top clubs get stronger because they always get players to nominate them and the trade is done for "unders".

Anyone who believes in AFL equalisation I have a bridge to sell you.
All true, except Rankine would have been worth 2 picks from Richmond. I think Richmond paid up plenty for those two. We did the same last year and got Dawson and Rachele.

so you're saying it's tactical
1. reid doesn't trust hamish with high draft picks - tick
2. let someone else take the risk and develop these guys - trade for them if proven to be any good

what we are seeing is AFC clearly
1. want to play the guys we've already drafted
2. dont rate this pool
3. have other trade targets next year when we can clear a bunch of list spots
4. not as much cap space next year as we thought or more spuds would have been delisted.

we will go after hollands long before phillipou. i have never ever heard one other player say before draft they wanted to be picked by afc. hollands did. we are clearly targeting people who love the club he has got to be the next acquisition target
Hollands wanted to be number 1, JHF said he wanted to be drafted by North, but it was number 1 he wanted.

Not to say we shouldn't go after hollands, we have heaps of capital next year as well as 2024 picks. We basically have 2 firsts and a second to trade.

If we intended to try and get Phillipou by trading into the first round, wouldn't we have to delist another senior player to free up a spot? Would be moving Seedsman to the Rookie List?

If that happens then we know before the draft that it's happening. These deals are put in place beforehand and then triggered on draft night.

We could just move a player from the senior list to the rookie list, between the ND and RD.

However, there are no indications whatsoever that the club has any interest whatsoever in trading for, or drafting, Phillipou. This appears to be nothing more than a BF fantasy.

However, consider that Phillipou "may" be taken prior to pick 8 ....making it highly unlikely we could trade back into this year's 1st round to a level, he's a real consideration

I doubt our F1 is available .....the 2 x F2's a possibility

Do you or anyone know who that is available next year makes us want to heavily invest in that draft.

Zero idea .....just remember, predictions this far out are finger in the air stuff ....at the beginning of this year, just 9 months ago .....Lemmey was rated in the top half dozen

IMO the Draft gets rated higher, if there's a number of good talls coming thru .....and IIRC that's the case

Its just that a few posters are writing about us stocking up for next year. I don't know with who. I'm a bird have the hand sort attitude and I am disappointed we may not have a pick this year other than MM.

I'm empathetic to your thoughts ....IMO it adds another 12 months to the rebuild, not adding another top 15 player

I understand the "sit back" for 12 months to properly analyze what stocks we already have ......it's a conservative approach .....but you're relying on a lot of faith in recruiting, re the strength of the Draft next year

Rankine not a top 15 type player in your eyes eh Wayne?..

Yes, of course ....if our list was mature, then our current approach is prudent .....however not with a developing list

GEEL have been far more active .....PORT have been far more active .....RICH have been far more active, as they're in for the here & now

Our approach is the more traditional rebuild .....other Clubs are pulling more levers to keep us down ......maybe I'm just having a bad day :(

Did you see his father play? Reckon he's about the same size....his dad was a string bean for his entire career.
Ben Hart was only 188CM and Max is 190.

You heard it here first, folks. Max Michalanney will play 300 games of AFL and will be a multiple All Australian.

we all feeling that
one of the issues we have is we dont have any trade capital on top of say a best 22 that we cant afford to lose
so if we are targeting players next year in trade we will need decent picks to do it

I think Rankine will be a far more important add for the rebuild than anyone we may have grabbed with pick 5..

still would have loved to kept 5 too though and grabbed Phillipou as he is the type of mid we need. Kicks goals, looks to have good skills and has the perfect size to add to our midfield mix..

He's not a "real consideration". We need all the F picks we have, and there is nothing whatsoever to make anyone think that we'll be trading back into the first round of the 2022 draft.

What happens if the borderline players you hoped improve don't?

Again it's a personal preference but I like scared players playing for futures instead of coasting.

I certainly agree it's not easy but we have tied our own hands at times
