Surely we're moving McAsey on as well? SURELY
It's too late to delist him, as the last List Lodgement for that was weeks ago - and we probably don't have room in our 2022 salary cap to pay him out.

It is, however, highly likely that he ends up on the Long Term Injury list or the Inactive List.

No, Phillipou hopefully would have been the gun mid we are missing, not speccy mids. Hopefully we add one of those next year.

But you didn’t actually address my point ;)
All players are speccy's ......did anyone TRULY think Soligo was going to be any good ? ......hardly raised any eyebrows after last years Draft

You just never know about kids .....until you find out who has the work effort & desire to improve

The club seemed pretty sure about Soligo, given the speed with which they signed him to an extended contract.

Most of the mids I mentioned have all had exposed AFL form, except for Taylor who looks good anyway. Which are you saying won’t make it?

This supports my post above .....once you start PS, those nuggets of gold turn up pretty quick

Soligo extended without playing a game .....but if he were already that good, in the eyes of the Club, they wouldn't have waited till Pick #36 to grab him ....that's illogical

There's still ???? on Cook, Taylor, and Schoenberg .....none are talentless, but do they possess the desire to do the required work

No-one knows, they could and should be good ......but it's not wrong to plan for all contingencies .....except apparently Rucks & KPD's

To be fair, that was our 2nd pick overall - the 1st being used on Rachele, who was also extended without having played a single game. We didn't have any picks between #6 (Rachele) and #36 (Soligo).

It's a bit about the player archetype, too. Soligo should be a gem, but you don't see too many players of his size considered as a bonafide top 5-10 player in the comp

Phillipou's archetype, if developed into a top-shelf player, is really the final piece of the puzzle we need for our midfield (that top 5-10 player). Obviously Phillipou specifically might not, still speculative at this stage (as with all draftees), but there's a reason he went top 10 (more desirable traits than the other tall midfielders in this draft crop)

Hopefully Dowling or Bond can do a Soligo and perform well for their draft position

We didn't last night either, after Michallaney .....but we manufactured a pick to get Dowling .....so why didn't we last year, IF we already knew Soligo was "special"

I'm sure we thought Soligo would be a good selection .....I'm just not convinced we knew how good, B4 Draft night

I reckon we might've been tossing up between Soligo and Taylor for that pick 36 - if one went in the early 30's before our pick, for instance, we would've traded up. Then once Taylor slid even further, we decided to trade in to get him, too

If we delist (and don't re-contract) a player in 2022, who is contracted for 2023, then we need to include their 2023 salary in our 2022 salary cap.

For 2022, the salary cap is $13,540,000, and the salary floor is $12,863,000 - a difference of $677K. Let's assume that the club was at the salary floor in 2022, and that Brown's 2023 salary was going to be $500K (not unreasonable, given that he was a senior player in a list full of lowly paid juniors). That would only leave $177K for paying out any other player(s). If we assume it was $600K (still not unreasonable), then we're down to $77K remaining.

Do you see how Brown's payout leaves very little wiggle room for paying out additional players?

** Note that the salary floor is 95% of the cap, not 90%.
As Brown has retired, I don't think he'll be getting paid his full salary, maybe half, so let's say $300k (not a bad deal to play local footy!). Yes, he was probably told he wouldn't be playing AFL, but I assume a mutual agreement.

Therefore we $377k left of the $677k you mentioned above.

Plus, a team can pay from 95% ($12.863) and up to 105% ($14.217m) they've banked over the previous two years (I'd hope we are in this situation, or close to).

So shouldn't there be up to $1.354 wiggle room?

Brown won't be getting 100% of his 2023 salary, but I'd expect it to be considerably more than half. His retirement is the result of his body taking a battering, over years spent playing for the AFC. There's not a whole lot between this, and someone who suffers a career ending concussion - and nobody would argue against Seedsman receiving 100%.

As for banking the 5%, I would hope that they wouldn't waste this on paying out an existing player - I would hope that they would use any such "bank" for front loading contract offers to gun players from other clubs (e.g. Dawson & Rankine).

I hope we are deep into trying to lure Elijah Hollands back in the next 12-24 months. I know he signed an extension not too long ago but with who we have, he would be an excellent addition to our midfield

Yeah he's a great talent, more of a wing right now but should still be one to watch out for (don't know how realistic it is now with his brother staying in Vic, but always worth keeping an eye out)

Just as an aside, the mechanism for bringing Seed & Moose back onto our list was a DFA period - from 10-11pm last night. Has anyone seen any confirmation, on the AFC or AFL websites, regarding these list changes?
I think that was only a one time deal during COVID
