List Mgmt. 2022 List Management: Draft, Trade and FA Pt2: Electric Boogaloo

Ooh I don't think so. There's clearly another path to overcome hurdles in the minds of some, quotas. I can confidently predict in the next couple of years there will be calls at high levels for racial/cultural quotas for AFL lists to increase diversity and overcome structural racism. The Hawthorn business may hasten it. Increased support mechanisms aren't enough for some, I am certain it won't be long before every club will be obliged to have a certain number of players from both ATSI and ethnic minority backgrounds on lists

Yes that is a point; although quotas in themselves won't improve the human outcomes and is likely in the initial stages to further propagate (ironically) ideas like what Rendell spoke of.

I'm deeply offended by the concept of quotas, even though my babies will benefit from it. I want my son to be drafted to the AFL because he is the best player at that pick, but if there is a quota system he will forever be considered to have been chosen above a better player for his racial identity. He is Matthew, a kind hearted cheeky, funny little man. I don't want people seeing anything else of him first.

Support systems aren't equal across Australia. That's a fact. That's why almost all the players drafted are private school boys.

I horribly suspect there will come a time when the individual cannot judged on their uniqueness, personality and how they connect with people but on how they fit within quotas of grouped types of people; it is all about how we see the world and if we only see groups of people then the meaning of individuality will be lost.

Reputation was generally with picking tall key position players with some very difficult picks - see below:
  • Jack Gunston (Pick 29)
  • Kurt Tippett (Pick 32)
  • Taylor Walker (Pick 75)
  • Ben Rutten (Rookie Draft Pick 40)
  • Rory Sloane (Pick 44)
Some decent picks there all 13 years plus ago though.
I’d argue our own boy David walls is criminally underrated in the industry. The quality of players in a short span he picked is very impressive. Remember he identified Tom Stewart and was desperate to pick him too in 2016.
The “experts” on trade radio in the morning wouldnt even know who David Walls is no doubt.

The thing that shits me is when opp rucks (Nic Nat particularly) fly into Darcy knees first, who's trying to genuinely go for the tap. Umpires randomly call it a block. There's literally nothing Sean can do except stand out of the way next time and let it bounce, which would be ridiculous.

Happens in the centre and at throw ins. The ruck rules are a mess.
still fuming about nic nat in 2016 after what he did to sandilands ribs

I’m happy Walls is underrated. Don’t want him poached by East Coast clubs.

He’s doing the job he loves most, and we appreciate the job he does.. win win!

I remember people begging us not to trade in Jordan Clark last year.

People are like you are going to look at worse once Jackson dominates for us for the next decade.

Settle down ol' chap. It's just my opinion.

He was there for that (he was there from 2014-2019 I believe). I think the criticism is not related to the early successful picks but to the poorness of the latter ones and the early round "busts" (Sam Petrevski Seton, Lochie O'Brien, Paddy Dow, Liam Stocker) as well.

I can't speak on those players in particular but sometimes the recruiting guys get the pick right and the coaches butcher the players development.

Graham Polak looked a superstar his first 2 years at Freo then went backwards.

Ryan Murphy kicked 50 odd goals for Souths as a 19 year old then never really fired a shot at AFL level.

Medhurst was great for a year or 2 then played well at the Pies but had a couple of terrible years at Freo.

There was quite a few through the Shwabbolly era that showed so much promise then never delivered.

Did SOS draft Weitering, curnow and McKay at Carlton in 2015? Or was he not there for that!
I was making a comment how he left with a bang. He wanted to leave his mark but essentially his last few years were terrible and listening to him he still sounds all messed up about how things finished up.

Last year he spent whole trade radio justifying Sammy PS selection and doubled down on that even when WC got him for next to nothing.

He has also already come out and said his trade and selection of Liam Stocker was a good selection even though it cost a top 10 pick. Dow was another.

Yes he did a reasonable job with his selections early in his tenure. He was a little obsessed with trying to pick moneyball bargains from GWS but I was specifically referring to his smug grin when he left Carlton and made some comments about how great it was that the last thing he did with Carlton was select Jack Martin for free. He really p#*ed off a number of clubs incl. Freo on the way out.

medhurst was turned into big thighed monster who lost his mobility.
he goes to Collingwood and they trim him back down and he’s an All Australian level player

Clark has been great, but his recruitment is part of the reason Logue is on the move and Wilson is languishing at Peel.

The question mark about Jackson is partly about his unconvincing impact as a forward to date, and the likely loss of Meek. Also his suggested salary may cause player retention issues.

There are perfect discussion topics aren't they?

Wilson can blame himself for that. A few mind fart performances in 2021 did it.

He was still afl quality when he played this year. He’s still got it. A few moments don’t change that. Wilson will play 10+ games next year.

I don’t think Clark in anyway influences Logue. We needed more run outta the backline. Clark has a huge tank. Chapman displaced Logue. Ryan also isn’t to be trusted on the quicker smaller players which puts him in a tough spot.

I remember being disappointed when we gave Wilson one year at the end of 2021. Thought it was an overreaction on a poor month of footy. Thought it could’ve easily been longer.

Outside of that one month he was very good for us imo. The attitude towards him on this board wasn’t great imo - lack of respect for a guy that played three and half years of good for us. Was clearly played injured in that month imo. It was almost comical how quickly this board’s opinion on him changed when he played a couple of games this season.

Him sitting at Peel is a waste. Ideally we find a way to fit eight defenders into the team and he plays. That means one of the defenders isn’t a defender next year. Whether that’s Wilson, Clark or Chapman I dunno - we’ll probably get a hint or two in November when Pre Season training starts.

Exactly. People were acting like Wilson had been a complete fail of a trade even though his first 3 years with us had been very good.

Looked really good in the preseason games this year but honestly I thought he was done watching him at Peel. He was playing like he didn't want to be there. Seems like a complete turnaround in recent times.

I would love nothing more than for chappy to be moved onto a wing so Wilson and Clark can play in the backline together. Wilson is definitely an AFL calibre player

Connolly was a s**t coach.
true....

But Premiership aside....

if there was one minor thing I would trade....

I would trade our win vs Port in round 23, 2014 and finish 5th vs a home elim final vs richmond for Ports round 22, 2005 win they had over freo to make the 2005 finals. Back to back finals in 2005-6, would of made me look back at that era more fondly. We should of made finals each year from 2003-6.

Hell, I would even go further and trade a finals win (most likely that 2010 elim final vs the hawks) over that round 22, 2005 loss vs Port.

Again, I am keen and determined to make finals in 2023. even if its a 7th or 8th spot. Yep I want back to back finals for 2022-23 under this side. we have only done that under that Ross Lyon coaching of 2012-5 era. That needs to be rectified.
