Unreal some of the comments here. Geez.
Absolutely stoked to have Carmichael on board. Get around the young fella.
Know of him in the local leagues and is an absolute professional, goes about it the right way and is hungry. How can you not be excited by that. Very talented.

Great pick - 191cm mid, a huge tank, with a seasoned body, all excellent foundations to immediately leverage.
Good performances in the VFL may see him elevated as quickly and permanently as Noble.

Do you understand that any bloke we would have taken will most likely still be available for us at the end of year if we want them, but so too will others not available now and others who will improve and impress over the rest of the season.
Don't you think every other club will want to take them also if they last till the end of the year and improve a lot between now and then? you take your chances before the opposition has a chance. Hine needs to go and the sooner the better

its not a free hit!!!

most of the players would be asking for 18mth contracts.

So its not a "6 months and get rid of them" kind of deal.

They are on our list next year.
They use up a spot and possibly force us to delist a player at years end that we'd like to keep for another year.
It reduces our flexibility at the end of the year.

So the reality of the decision is this:

Is the player better than someone we would draft at the end of year?
What do we gain by taking them now (and thus using a list spot) vs waiting until end of year?

If the club rates this draft (which clearly a lot of clubs are by due to the fact they all passed), then why use up a spot now and have to delist an extra player?

If anyone is good enough.....then they have 6 months to show the same progress and put themselves in the frame for the ND, Rookie, PSS.....

We used 2 picks last year (rightly or wrongly) and that would have hampered us (potentially) in last years draft.

Example: is pick 40 in the ND better than any player we didn't take in the MSD this year????

This is very true and that’s why you need to look long term. Six months is not enough time to judge. We took plenty of players last November so I don’t see how Begg and Johnson hampered that. If anything it arguably gave the club a six month head start, especially considering Covid and the effect that had on scouting effectively.

I’m glad we went best available rather than panicked about some injuries.

I’m sure if a targeted player was there with our second pick we might have swooped. And if our injury list had gotten worse rather than better, the 6 month immediate backup option was still there.

As a side note I was pleasantly surprised to see Ash Johnson is listed as only a week away.

Hopefully a couple of weeks back in the VFL and he could really be pushing for a debut at AFL level.
That one snuck by me, didn't notice that. Would love to see him get a debut with Kreuger out for the season.

There it is! Minimal exposure to elite systems! Hines favourite trait after being a former basketballer 🤣🤣🤣

Has Worked before and With the MSD these are the Types you look for.

With no 2nd round Picks in ND he might been gone by our 2nd Pick in National Draft IF he kept playing well

The issue with El Nour isn't El Nour. If they didn't rate him, they shouldn't take him. That's fair. I really hope he continues to bulk up and ply his trade, then hopefully get that AFL chance one day.

It's just the frustration of supporting a club that has Madgen playing week in, week out as a key defender and Mihocek as the only reliable key forward. Checkers is a gun and I love him, but he should be a second or third tall... Imagine the damage he could do playing off a Naughton or McKay for example.

We can't just spend year after year saying "best available" at all costs. Better land a quality tall kid in the ND this year or I'll... continue to sook about it on BigFooty. That'll show em.

This imaginary quality tall wasn’t ever going to be available in the MSD. We already have a long list of young unknown talls on our list… maybe it’s better to work out if any of them are any good before bringing in more of the same just for the sake of it.

None of our MSD picks thus far have been short-term thinking. Makes sense to keep giving long contracts if we keep drafting young prospects.

We don't have lot of Quality Players around 22-23 years old

Don’t get me wrong Dave, I like the selection, and it was the right one to make with all the more fancied KPP’s off the board.
It’s just funny is all.

Has his track record given you reason to believe that I am joking? show me where Hine has excelled at picking KPP.

Mate, the chances of finding an AFL calibre key position player at the back end of the mid season draft is almost non existent.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the list of 5-6 blokes Hine mentioned only included Dawson and Derkson as those key position players. Both of whom were gone (and personally thank god Dawson was with his god awful kicking skills).

Even Kelly and McMahon would currently be in front of the rest of the available nominees. And they are both available to play at the moment if the short term is what you are worried about.

Hopefully our real key position targets are in the national draft.

Lemmey/Scully/Keeler/Jefferson etc etc
