Looked bad at the time , Willie was slightly late and left the ground whilst turning to protect himself .

But the fact that he didn't hit him high and Rowell didn't have any effects from it not even required to do concussion test tells me this shouldn't be an issue .

Very lucky for Willie as the rules as they stand would have had him out for multiple weeks IF it got him high .

The whole ' potential to cause serious injury' is BS as they would have to rule anyone going for a speccy out if they were consistent

**** the opposition supporters fans. If it wasn't for the fans we wouldn't have a ban. Even the commentators didn't have a problem with it and umpired had no issue **** you.
Typical teachers pets

Might have to weigh it up to see whether or not it’s worth putting him in the headlines again to get him off. First game in yonks the week off might be good for him to ease into the season and keep him fresh for Freo. We should be able to knock off north if we get a few back without him

As I said in the positives and negatives thread, I feel reactions would be different if we weren't talking about a West Coast player. I love Willie but the onus these days is on the player making contact and he was late to the contest so, under the current rules, the responsibility is on Willie. It sucks because I want to see Willie play but take the week and run.

He is lucky he didn’t do more serious damage which may have also come into the ruling per the MRO guidelines..

Rowell had the ball in his hands just before Willie decided to leave the ground so he was late for sure.. was it great to see yeah but definitely against the rules..

Between that and his late bump in the last quarter that cost a goal I hope we aren’t going to see a year of him trying to imitate the last years of chris lewis’s career.

Given the speed they were both approaching the ball at from opposing directions, Rioli had already committed to jumping at the ball prior to Rowell getting his hands on it

It was a genuine, if slightly mistimed, attempt at marking the footy

Also it wasn’t high contact, as in above the shoulders

A guy like Cotchin (playing for a team like richmond) can take a blokes head off late to the contest in a prelim resulting in concussion and get off, but as soon as one of our guys makes a fair bump in a marking contest, with no high contact and no resulting injury he cops a week, so typical.

I don't buy that, who gives a shit if there's a few articles written about it. It's irrelevant to everything else that happened with him, and there's a good argument to be made against the suspension. He looked good yesterday in his first game back in 2 years, and we need to win this week so another game can only be good for him and the team.

Sounds unnecessarily pessimistic. He has always been a tough physical player.

Looked like a great clean hit live at the game, even Rowell said post game it was clean. Really odd.

It's the AFL trying to control it - they don't even want clean hits that don't look good. They should just outlaw the bump and get it over and done with so I can start watching a more physical games like curling.

Absolutely. But where does it stop? Banning the tackle in case there is a had clash or a head knock on the ground?

No more hand-balling or kicking the football in case an extremity collides with another player's head as a result of the action.

It was dead set brilliant football. Willy going back with the flight at full pace with eyes only on the ball. Had he squibbed Rowell kicks for goal, instead we kick one.
Pretty sure Rowell was going back with the flight . Willie was running toward the flight

its the "Optics" and trial by Fox, contact was so high he grabbed his shoulder??, not sure what they expect Rioli to do in that situation?? if he stays low and bumps all good?

Will they take Rowell's comment into consideration?
Or will they claim that the impact of Willie's bump prevented him from thinking rationally lol? 😂😂😂

"Fair play, it was a good hit," Rowell said.

"The incident was graded as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact, resulting in a one-match ban...".
AFL defines high contact as any region above or on top of the shoulder. Rioli‘s hip made contact with Rowell‘s left shoulder (about 2-3 inches below the top of the shoulder) The force transmitted to the collar bone and that is the reason why Rowell grabbed his left collar bone when he fell to the ground.
It is not a high contact.

Looked like a reckless jump but turned out to be a great hit. Got banned more for jumping more than anything else. Medium impact is bullshit given Rowell went on to get the 3 votes, and there’s no way that’s hit him in the head, he’d have been stretchered off with a hip to the face
